This document outlines the foundation and first year results of the H.E.L.P. Honduras organization, which was formed as a student-based, student-governed international outreach initiative at the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University. Specifically, in its first year the organization focused on providing microcredit and service relief to victims of Hurricane Mitch in Honduras.

After studying the case of H.E.L.P. Honduras, readers should conclude that educators interested in sponsoring sustainable student-run service learning organizations at private universities must address three primary issues: the problem of student selection and turnover, the need for administrative and faculty endorsement, and the need …

A Comparison Of Employer Hiring Practices And Career Opportunities Between Two-Year And Four-Year Accounting Graduates Who Have Full Time Positions In The Work Force Within The State Of Utah, Anita Weston

This study was conducted to determine if employers were inclined to discriminate between two-year and four-year educated accountants in making hiring and promotional decisions. In addition, accounting graduates of two-year and four-year institutions were studied to see if there were differences between these two groups in regard to educational programs taken, perceptions of the benefit received from the courses taken, salaries received, and views concerning employer hiring and promotional practices.

This study included three different groups consisting of 39 employers in the private business sector as well as 43 two-year accounting associate degree graduates and 43 bachelor accounting degree graduates. …

A study of shorthand usage as perceived by selected Ogden, Utah business executives was conducted to determine if curriculum changes must be made in Business Education Department programs in order to meet the secretarial training requirements of Ogden, Utah Business. Data were collected by telephone interview from 84 businessmen who employed one or more secretaries. These data were stratified according to type of business and size of business. Secretarial employment was stratified according to shorthand as a job requirement and to shorthand utilization of the job. The 1969 through 1976 graduating classes of the business education program at Utah State University were surveyed in this study. The questionnaire was designed to ascertain the work experience of the graduates, the educational status of the graduates, and the value the graduates place on the courses contained in the business education program according to the occupations of the graduates.

Graduates are employed in a large variety of occupations, and the majority of the graduates hold teaching certificates. The majority of the graduates have not completed advanced degrees, and are undecided as to whether or not they will continue their …

The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) organizations serve the business youth of today--the business leaders of tomorrow. These organizations, founded by Hamden L. forkner, have been in existence since 1942. The first FBLA chapter was chartered at Johnson City, Tennessee; and the first PBL chapter was charted at Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, (now the University of Northern Iowa).1

Chapter growth has been rapid with the latest figures showing 4,587 FBLA chapters and 461 PBL chapters now in existence in 44 states and 3 territories.2

The purpose of the study was to determine the present status and the potential for future organization of business youth organizations in Utah high schools.

Questionnaires were mailed to Utah high school business teachers and to Utah high school principals.

Sixty-six per cent of the responding teachers bad never served as a business youth club sponsor; and 69 per cent of the teachers had never belonged to a business youth organization in high school or in college.

Fifty-one per cent of the teachers expressed an interest in attending a regional meeting to discuss the organization of additional business youth organizations. …

This study was undertaken to determine the number, type, and requirements of entry-level office positions in Ogden, Utah, banks.

Questionnaires were taken to the participating banks in the Ogden, Utah, banking community. The responding banks indicated that they would consider recent high school graduates to all of the positions studied; however, a majority of the banks preferred to hire females rather than males to to the office positions studied.

All of the responding banks required some type of requirement for each of the office entry-level positions, and majority of the banks required a pre-employment test of the applicants. This information …
