Classrooms On The Frontier: Integrating Original Research Into Lectures, Matthew D. Meng, Lucas Rentschler Dec 2018

Classrooms On The Frontier: Integrating Original Research Into Lectures, Matthew D. Meng, Lucas Rentschler

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

The role of an academic is often spread across two main areas: researching and teaching. Although some argue that the scarcity of time, energy, and commitment precludes the ability to do both well, and are therefore substitutes, we argue that these roles can be complementary. That is, by incorporating original research into the classroom, several benefits can be gleaned by both faculty and students. We feel that if done correctly, a professor’s research and teaching can mutually benefit, as well. To illustrate and support this argument, we have included two specific examples of using original research to teach relevant ...

The previous construct of research was focused on social media platforms as a benefactor in broadcasting towards a global audience with non-academic professions. Following along the same ideology, this research directs the attention to a pertained audience in academic profession.

•Embry-Riddle is the host of Scholarly Commons which collects the research of authors (faculty members), and assists in developing a digital portfolio. This portfolio creates metric measurements on a dashboard to indicate where downloads are occurring, and aids in providing current information pertaining to the authors’ publication. •In this case, the publication of the National Airline Quality Rating (AQR) (https ...

Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, And American Capitalism, Kris Principe

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

Pope Francis’ writing of both Evangelii Gaudium (Joy of the Gospel) and Laudato Si’ (On Care For Our Common Home) has led several in the popular press to comment on the Pope’s distrust of capitalism. Here, the pope’s commentary is reconciled with the American perspective on capitalism. Consumer sovereignty and corporate governance, carried out in accordance with the three pillars of Catholic Social Justice of human dignity, solidarity and subsidiarity, can fulfill the Pope’s mandate in Evangelii Gaudium.

In fact, it is headed for zero! The cost of higher education has surged more than 500% since 1985. Rising costs of higher education means Americans owe nearly $1.3 trillion in student loan debt. The average class of 2016 graduate has about $37k in student loan ...

Accounting Students And Their Writing Skills: Inside-Outside Autoethnographic Reflection, Keith Howson, Phil Fitzsimmons May 2017

Accounting Students And Their Writing Skills: Inside-Outside Autoethnographic Reflection, Keith Howson, Phil Fitzsimmons

Business Conference Papers

This paper seeks to report on the findings of a qualitative research project that sought to illuminate one cohort of accounting students understanding and approach to writing. The first in a planned series of projects, this particular research instance used the paradigmatic framework of an authoethnographic bricolage as a reflexive tool so as to gain entrée into this cohort’s awareness. What emerged from this ‘inside-outside’ methodology or ‘research into self’, ‘research through self’ and ‘research on self’ was the apparent tension between the requirements of tertiary writing and the ‘contexts of culture’ and ‘context of situation’ of the accounting ...

Case Selection: A Case For A New Approach, Timothy L. Harper, Mary E. Taber, Barbara P. Norelli

Barbara Norelli

While conducting empirical research regarding the relationship between case characteristics and student performance, the authors were surprised to find a lack of conceptual and empirical research regarding instructor case selection. This conceptual paper explores the case selection process and introduces case selection as an under-investigated component of the case teaching method in management education. Case selection is important because it is a critical component of the case teaching method. There has been no empirical testing of the effectiveness of case selection technique. The authors identify and propose case selection criteria for instructors of management education.

When Meaningful Writing Reflects Vincentian Values, Michele Eodice, Anne Ellen Geller, Neal Lerner

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

In The Meaningful Writing Project – our study of over 700 seniors at three universities – students describe how education values are embodied in writing projects in and out of school. In brief, our results show that students find meaning when they are invited to tap into the power of personal connection, see what they are writing as applicable and relevant to the real world, imagine their future selves, immerse themselves in what they are thinking and writing about, and experience research for learning. In many cases, the experiences students reported are aligned with Vincentian values for higher education, namely participation in ...

A Concept Paper On Networks Of Excellence For Research And Education, Suresh V. Garimella, David B. Janes, Anne Slaughter Andrew Apr 2015

A Concept Paper On Networks Of Excellence For Research And Education, Suresh V. Garimella, David B. Janes, Anne Slaughter Andrew

PPRI Digital Library

Research and education ecosystems, foundational components of knowledge-based economies, are relatively underdeveloped in Latin America. The entire ecosystem of a research university — including resources, corporate partnerships, and research — must capitalize on a symbiosis between the research, education and commercialization missions. A university cannot transform unilaterally nor can universities sustain the required transformation without government and industry participation. Initiatives to accelerate the development of research university ecosystems are critical for the realization of knowledge-based economies and resilient civil societies.

To accelerate the development of research and education ecosystems across the Americas, the authors propose to establish “Networks of Excellence” in key ...
