A Phenomenographic Study Of What It Means To Supervise Doctoral Students, April Wright, Jane Murray, Patricia Geale

We utilize the research methodology of phenomenography in this study to explore what doctoral supervisors understand supervision to be and how they enact this understanding in the practice of supervising students. Twenty interviews were undertaken with supervisors at three Australian universities to uncover “lived” experiences of doctoral research supervision. Five qualitatively different ways of conceiving supervisors’ roles emerged through phenomenographic analysis of the transcripts. Our findings suggest that while supervisors undertake similar tasks when supervising, they approach these tasks differently because of their qualitatively different understandings of what supervision is.

“This paper analyses effects of national or provincial exit examinations on education quality. On theoretical grounds, the paper argues that such examinations should increase high school achievement, particularly in examination subjects, and that teachers and students and parents and school administrators should focus more on academic achievement when making school-quality decisions. On the negative side, exit examinations may lead to a tendency to concentrate on learning facts, rather than understanding contexts.”

[Excerpt] This chapter examines the effects of improved signaling of student achievement in high school on the labor market success of recent high-school graduates. The chapter is organized into three sections. In the first section, we reproduce the argument that Bishop put forth in 1985 that better signaling of student achievement to employers would improve the quality of the jobs that recent high-school graduates could obtain and strengthen incentives to learn. [Excerpt] The test score decline between 1967 and 1980 was large (about 1.25 grade-level equivalents) and historically unprecedented. New estimates of trend in academic achievement, of the effect of academic achievement on productivity and of trend in the quality of the work force are developed. They imply that if test scores had continued to grow after 1967 at the rate that prevailed in the previous quarter century, labor quality would now be 2.9 percent higher and 1987 GNP $86 billion higher.

论文摘要 作为中国古代十三朝都城，西安（古称长安）蕴藏着中国最重要历史时期的丰富遗产，是世界主要考古中心之一。由于其在政治历史遗产方面的优势地位，西安一直立于文化遗产研究争鸣的前沿，有关其在二十一世纪中国发展进程中的地位和影响亦为热点论题。当前，西安正面临着来自全球化、城市化和国内外旅游者三方面的影响。在近几十年，尤其是随着本世纪初一项复兴“唐皇城”宏伟计划的出台及逐步实施，西安市人口密集的老城区逐渐成为关注和讨论的焦点。这篇论文就此项 “唐皇城复兴规划”将对西安老城区历史文化遗产带来的影响进行了讨论，还着力分析了该规划对老城内穆斯林社区回族居民的日常精神文化生活可能产生的冲击。这项规划将引发西安城市面貌和社会结构的重要变化。与此同时，该规划的实施还将使西安遭遇来自两方面的挑战：一方面如何协调保护历史遗产与满足居民现实需求两者关系，另一方面如何把现有老城区改造成以旅游业为主导的新型城市空间。

Previous studies indicate that as many as 25-50% of applicants in organizational and educational settings are retested with measures of cognitive ability. Researchers have shown that practice effects are found across measurement occasions such that scores improve when these applicants retest. This study uses meta-analysis to summarize the results of 50 studies of practice effects for tests of cognitive ability. Results from 107 samples and 134,436 participants revealed an adjusted overall effect size of .26. Moderator analyses indicated that effects were larger when practice was accompanied by test coaching, and when identical forms were used. Additional research is needed to …

Considerable effort has been exercised in estimating mean returns to education while carefully considering biases arising from unmeasured ability and measurement error. Recent work has investigated whether there are variations from the “mean” return to education across the population with mixed results. We use an instrumental variables estimator for quantile regression on a sample of twins to estimate an entire family of returns to education at different quantiles of the conditional distribution of wages while addressing simultaneity and measurement error biases. Information systems (IS) research often attempts to examine and explain how technology leads to outcomes through usage of IS. Although extensive research in this area has resulted in a significant number of theories, limited work has been done on integrating these theories. This paper presents adaptive structuration theory (AST) as a meta-theory for examining IS within an organizational context.
