A Sociolinguistic Study Of Crow Language Maintenance, John Arthur Stanley Read
A Sociolinguistic Study Of Crow Language Maintenance, John Arthur Stanley Read
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
The purpose of the study was to investigate the way in which the Crow Tribe of Indians in southeastern Montana have maintained the use of their language, rather than shifting mainly or entirely to the use of English.
First it was necessary to document the present level and scope of Crow language maintenance. To this end, two sociolinguistic surveys were undertaken. One comprised an interview schedule administered to an 18 per cent sample of Crow family heads. The respondents were asked to report on their relative use of Crow and English in various situations, their preferences in language choice, their …

Construction, Administration, And Validation Of A Test Of Oral Language Usage, Ronald Harrison
Construction, Administration, And Validation Of A Test Of Oral Language Usage, Ronald Harrison
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
We as teacher of English are faced with the task of preparing students for the world they will meet when they leave the classroom—a world that will judge them in part by their ability to manipulate the language to their advantage. And yet to measure the use of language, we rely almost exclusively on written measurements. It seems likely that students may easily learn to give the teacher the answer he wants on written tests of English usage. Oral tests are commercially available, but many are prohibitively expensive; others require hours of instruction before the teacher can consider himself qualified …

A Handful Of English: An Inventory Of Typical American Gestures, Margaret L. Clement
MA TESOL Collection
A Handful of English is a collection and description of some fifty typical North American gestures, with photographs and commentary on each one. Finally, the project includes ESL classroom applications, including sample dialogues and techniques.
Composing And Using Poetry As An Esl Teaching Tool, Roland Caissie
Composing And Using Poetry As An Esl Teaching Tool, Roland Caissie
MA TESOL Collection
It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate how poetry can be a valuable tool in the ESL classroom, the problems connected with relying on extant verse for work with ESL students, and the consequential preferability of producing one's own poetry. In addition, guidelines and suggestions are offered for creating original and goal-specific works, together with ways in which those works, once made, may be used most effectively in the ESL classroom. Also, sample works, by the author and others, as well as various exercises and a brief bibliography, are provided in an appendix, giving the reader a source …

A Resource And Idea Book ( For Teachers Of English To Speakers Of Other Languages ), Eleanor C. Boone, Rick Gildea, Pat Moran
MA TESOL Collection
This is a resource manual for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. Those teachers who should find the manual most useful are Peace Corps EFL teachers in host country secondary schools.
This manual is divided into two parts. The first part consists of seven chapters, the first six of which deal specifically with resources (teaching ideas, techniques and suggestions) for HOW to present, develop and reinforce Pronunciation, Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading, Writing and Conversation. There is an additional chapter on games as techniques for reviewing the language skills already taught.
The second part of the manual, the appendices, contains …
Charts That Show Basic Transformations In English, Lawrence Fuller Allen
Charts That Show Basic Transformations In English, Lawrence Fuller Allen
MA TESOL Collection
This project is a teaching tool to be used in the ESL classroom. It consists of six large (30" x 20") multicolored charts. Each charts focuses on a particular "operator" verb in English ("be," "do," or the modals) and shows the role the operator plays in the grammatical transformations of question formation and negation. The student can actually see how the same sentence changes from the statement to the question form and from affirmative to negative. In addition to the charts themselves, the project includes a written description of the charts, suggestions for using them in the classroom, and tables …
The Cultural Problems Encountered In Teaching Basic English To Russian Jew Refugees As An Initial Step To Entering An English Speaking Society, James Edwin Traver
The Cultural Problems Encountered In Teaching Basic English To Russian Jew Refugees As An Initial Step To Entering An English Speaking Society, James Edwin Traver
MA TESOL Collection
The Organizzazione Rieducazione Tecnia in Rome, Italy offers English language instruction to Russian Jew refugees who for one reason or another wish to obtain visas to an English speaking country. The students are in a transitional phase in their lives; they have left their country of birth and haven't yet been accepted into another country of their choice. This creates special needs in regard to language acquisition. They need survival skills to help them make this transition and they need to gain an appreciation of English speaking cultures.
During the summer of 1977, I taught and observed classes at this …

Methods And Materials For Esl Literacy, Ann Ebersole Strauch
Methods And Materials For Esl Literacy, Ann Ebersole Strauch
MA TESOL Collection
Literacy education for adolescents and adults has been a perplexing problem for ESL teachers, who are generally unprepared for this specific type of instruction. Materials designed for native-English speakers are not suitable for ESL literacy instruction, and teacher-training institutions are not providing preparation for ESL literacy for prospective ESL teachers. Furthemore, very little research has been done on ESL literacy. In spite of this dearth of information and lack of suitable didactic materials available, substantial numbers of nonliterate students are seeking ESL instruction. This thesis addresses the need for methods and materials specifically intended for ESL literacy instruction.

A Language Arts Project Involving The Construction Of A Solar Greenhouse By Navajo Children, Daniel J. Mclaughlin
A Language Arts Project Involving The Construction Of A Solar Greenhouse By Navajo Children, Daniel J. Mclaughlin
MA TESOL Collection
This paper, in three parts, explains why and how fifth and sixth grade students at a Navajo bilingual elementary school in New Mexico built a solar greenhouse as a language arts project. The first part catalogues the English speaking, reading, and writing needs of the children. It details the rationale behind building a greenhouse to address these needs. The second part is the greenhouse project itself. It contains English lessons which the students used as guidelines for planning and building the greenhouse structure. The third part, found in the Appendix, contains one of the students' workbooks.
I hope this serves …
Visual Developmental Dyslexia In Children (Specific Language Disability), Sue Golden
Visual Developmental Dyslexia In Children (Specific Language Disability), Sue Golden
MA TESOL Collection
Developmental Dyslexia is a disorder manifested by difficulty in learning to read, speak, and write, despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence, and socio-cultural opportunity. Although this disorder affects approximately 10% of all school children, it remains unknown to many teachers, especially those in the field of English as a Second Language (ESL). The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the nature of this disorder and the current remedial methods and techniques being used. It also points out some of the discrepancies that exist between theory (the treatment that a child would ideally receive), and reality; this is …
Psycho-Social Factors Influencing The Learning Of A Second Or A Foreign Language, Dora Mae Rodgers
Psycho-Social Factors Influencing The Learning Of A Second Or A Foreign Language, Dora Mae Rodgers
Dissertations
Problem. With bilingualism now a world-wide phenomenon, language has become a powerful force for unity both at home and abroad. This, along with increased immigration, has emphasized the need for the study of second or foreign languages. In the United States, bilingualism and the learning of English as a second language are outstanding educational problems. Psycho-socio-cultural factors, attitudes, and motivation affect second language learning perhaps even more than age, aptitude, or methodology. The second language teacher must be aware of the existence and importance of these factors and their inherent problems. This study sought to classify and rate the importance …
