Making Space For Adolescents Of Refugee Background In Public Libraries, Danielle S. Dejonge
Making Space For Adolescents Of Refugee Background In Public Libraries, Danielle S. Dejonge
Culminating Experience Projects
Refugee adolescents go through multiple transitions that affect identity while settling in their new country of relocation. The ability to recognize the complexity of identity in a healthy way is fostered by safe spaces of belonging that encourage agency. Libraries, as spaces already effectively serving diverse populations including refugee youth, have the resources to be a safe space for these adolescents. One resource that has been trending in libraries is a makerspace. Makerspaces offer multimodal activities, whether they be arts-based or STEM-based, that not only encourage critical thought, but also allow for development of belonging and agency for healthy dynamic …

Narrowing The Achievement Gap: Culturally Responsive Teaching For African American Students, Haylee Batzer
Culminating Experience Projects
It is no surprise to educators that classrooms are filled with children of all different backgrounds. Most teacher preparation programs try their best to prepare educators to teach students of diversity and support inclusion in the classroom. However, educators are still finding themselves lacking the skills needed to incorporate culturally responsive teaching (CRT) into their classrooms. Students of all backgrounds need inclusive practices to be successful. It is important to all students that they feel supported and seen in the classroom, without these practices schools start to see a decline in graduation rates and an increase in dropout rates. Many …

Ways To Increase Retention Rates Among American Indian/Alaskan Native Students At Community Colleges, Sarah R. Wheeler
Culminating Experience Projects
American Indians/Alaskan Natives (AI/AN) pursue higher education disproportionately compared to other populations. Literature indicates that a sense of belonging significantly impacts AI/AN students' persistence rates at community colleges. Sense of belonging and support from community colleges and families directly influence student success in higher education. AI/AN students are grounded in their community and have desires to build their cultural capital. Obtaining a degree will strengthen their community and, ultimately, their nation. It is essential for AI/AN students and parents to feel equipped with resources and ways community colleges support marginalized students. Creating a student and parent orientation, access to a …
Supporting English Language Learners: Preparing Content Area Teachers To Promote Academic Achievement Among Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Learner Populations., Molly K. Roesler
Culminating Experience Projects
Teachers throughout the United States continue to be ill-prepared to support the evergrowing English Language Learner (ELL) population. ELLs often experience less academic achievement than their non-ELL peers. One factor in this academic gap is the amount of preparation content area teachers receive. Content area teachers are not sufficiently prepared to teach ELLs because of the lack of training they receive in Second Language Acquisition theories and strategies. This project examines what the research has identified as negative factors that result in lack of teacher preparation, and how to address these factors. Additionally, the project examines what the research highlights …

Linguistically And Culturally Responsive Teaching For Ll In The Mainstream Classroom: Planning Tools And Other Classroom Resources, Emily L. Macarthur
Culminating Experience Projects
An increasingly diverse student population, including English Language Learners (LL), are continuing to integrate into U.S. schools in recent years. Without the proper training and tools, teachers are struggling to meet the needs of LL in the classroom. This project argues for the inclusion of linguistically and culturally responsive teaching methods and curriculum choices for implementation in a mainstream classroom. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Literacy Shifts call for LL to meet the same rigorous standards as their Native English-speaking (NES) peers, and so the planning tools and other resources described in this project reflect the CCSS’ focus on …
