Implications Of Implementing A Hybrid Learning Approach At The University Of Guyana, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

Online learning and teaching is pervading higher education (HE) and many Universities are faced with the challenge of incorporating technology in education to meet the needs of students. The objective of this paper is to examine the implications of introducing a hybrid learning approach at the University of Guyana. A rationale has been established as to why this need is so germane. Literature has been reviewed and discussed, concerning face to face (F2F), online and blended instruction and the pertinence of these in current HE pedagogies. Special emphasis is paid to the transformative potential of blended learning to confront HE …

L1 Transfer In Post-Verbal Preposition: An Inter-Level Comparison, Ali Jahangard, Hemaseh Bagheri

Ali Jahangard

The study intended to investigate the well-known issue of L1 transfer in L2 acquisition. The primary aim of this research was to compare the extent to which L1 transfer may take place in different developmental stages in L2 learning procedure. Persian learners of English have been observed to misuse a number of the prepositions with some of the verbs. Having scrutinized more than a hundred pieces of students’ writing assignments, the authors came up with a pattern of errors in this area. It was observed that the majority of these errors could be attributed to Persian: the learners’ choice of …

Memorial Meeting For Shri. Vajubhai Patel At Gandhi Respected Prof. Pushpendra Singh, Sending My Train Details. Regards Vibhuti Patelshikshan Bhavan, Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

Memorial Meeting for Shri. Vajubhai Patel on 24-9-2013 at Gandhi Shikshan Bhavan (GSB), Juhu North, Mumbai-400049

Shri. Vajubhai Patel, visionary educationist passed away. Vajubhai had worked with Mahatma Gandhi.

Vajubhai created an environment of freedom, were we ‘enjoyed’ coming to school, to participate and work ceaselessly with all our might, to innovate and to allow students to create, criticize and find solutions. He inspired us to experiment and not stick to the text-book. Thus, we framed a curriculum for social studies which was totally new concept at that time. History, Geography, Civics and environment were integrated in our approach of …

Reclaiming Our Indigenous Voices: The Problem With Postcolonial Sub-Saharan African School Curriculum, Edward Shizha Sep 2013

Reclaiming Our Indigenous Voices: The Problem With Postcolonial Sub-Saharan African School Curriculum, Edward Shizha

Edward Shizha

The school curriculum in postcolonial Sub-Saharan Africa experiences challenges that are a legacy of colonial education that remained in place decades after political decolonization. The case for African school curriculum is contentious in contemporary Africa because it negates the voices of African indigenous populations. Despite the advent of decolonization that started in the 1960s, African education systems mirror colonial education paradigms inherited from former colonial governments. Colonial education was hegemonic and disruptive to African cultural practices, indigenous knowledges (IKs) and ways of knowing. Prior to colonization, Africans were socialized and educated within African indigenous cultural contexts. With the advent of …

The False Narrative, Edward Earl Bell Jul 2013

The False Narrative, Edward Earl Bell

Dr. Edward E. Bell

The notion of black-on-black crime is widespread. We tend to think that black-on-black crime is reality—not realizing that “86% of whites perpetrate crimes against other whites and 94% of blacks against blacks.” Williams stated, in the April 10, 2012 edition of the Root, the following: “The truth?

The Verdict And Response, Edward Earl Bell Jul 2013

The Verdict And Response, Edward Earl Bell

Edward Earl Bell

The murdering of black boys is not foreign. Prior to Zimmerman, black boys were murdered in streets from coast to coast. “We” were somewhat silent calling for a global ending of these deaths. The Zimmerman verdict seems to have produced clamor not only in the black community but also in communities across the globe.

It's Not Just About The Money: Motivations For Youth Migration In Rural China, Yilin Chiang, Emily C. Hannum, Grace Kao Jun 2013

It's Not Just About The Money: Motivations For Youth Migration In Rural China, Yilin Chiang, Emily C. Hannum, Grace Kao

Emily C. Hannum

This study investigates the incentives for labor migration of youth in rural China using panel data from the Gansu Survey of Children and Families, a longitudinal study of youth in rural Gansu Province of China. We investigate the individual and altruistic economic motivations featured prominently in demographic and economic research on migration. However, we propose that the non-economic goal of personal development, a motivation suggested in numerous qualitative studies of women migrants in China and elsewhere, is also important, especially for young migrants. Analyzes indicate that, while young men and young women hold different motivations for migration, the desire for …

English Learning Demotivation Studies In The Efl Contexts: State Of The Art, Yoon-Kyoung Kim, Tae-Young Kim Mar 2013

English Learning Demotivation Studies In The Efl Contexts: State Of The Art, Yoon-Kyoung Kim, Tae-Young Kim

Dr. Tae-Young Kim (김태영, 金兌英)

This paper reviews the studies conducted on English learning demotivation in the EFL contexts. Demotivation research in the EFL contexts is significant given the learners’ less opportunities to use the target language outside school and consequent difficulties in maintaining their interest in learning it. In order to look into how this issue of demotivation has been addressed, the previous EFL demotivation studies are analyzed based on (a) their research methods and (b) perspectives on the definition of demotivation. The research methods adopted by the previous research include quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods. In terms of different underlying assumptions on what …

Same Environment, Different Affordances: Ecological Analysis Of Four Different Learners In A University Context, Miso Kim, Tae-Young Kim Mar 2013

Same Environment, Different Affordances: Ecological Analysis Of Four Different Learners In A University Context, Miso Kim, Tae-Young Kim

Dr. Tae-Young Kim (김태영, 金兌英)

This study investigates the subjective realization of objective environmental factors and learners’ agency in constructing their meaning potential. According to van Lier’s (2000, 2002, 2004) ecological perspective, the environment is yet an unrealized set of potential, and affordance is what was felt meaningful to the learner. Also, learners actively construct their terms and conditions of learning with their agency (Lantolf & Pavlenko, 2001). Based on van Lier’s ecological framework, two pairs of students enrolled in two same English classes were recruited. Life history, semi-structured interview, and task recall data revealed that for some students, affordance of the English classroom was …

Filipino American Educational Leaders In Northern California K-12 Public Schools: Challenges And Opportunities, Cynthia Manalo Rapaido Mar 2013

Filipino American Educational Leaders In Northern California K-12 Public Schools: Challenges And Opportunities, Cynthia Manalo Rapaido

Cynthia Manalo Rapaido

The assumption that all Asians are model minorities is incorrect. The largest group of Asian American people is comprised of Filipino people followed closely by Chinese people; although Filipino people comprise the largest population, they lag behind Chinese and other Asian American groups with respect to academic achievement. Hence, Filipino American people are underrepresented as educational leaders in K–12 public schools in California. Compared to other Asian ethnic groups, Filipino American people have (a) a lower achievement level for academic success, (b) a lower percentage enrolled in college in the United States, (c) a lower percentage 25–29 years of age …

Factors Implicating Sense Of Belonging At A Hispanic-Serving Institution, Gloria S. Vaquera, Ricardo Maestas, Linda Munoz Zehr

Gloria S. Vaquera

This study examines factors that impact students' sense of belonging at a Hispanic-serving institution. Findings indicate that various variables measuring academic and social integration as well as experiences with and perceptions of diversity have a positive impact on sense of belonging. Implications support the idea that campus diversity may improve sense of belonging and ultimately improve retention of all students. Implications and recommendations are discussed.

The Age Factor In Language Acquisition, Ahlam Alfouaim Jan 2013

The Age Factor In Language Acquisition, Ahlam Alfouaim

Ahlam Alfouaim

“She talks very well for her age, doesn’t she?” Acquiring a language is a fascinating process that has always been intriguing for scholars and linguists over the history. Many scholars have successfully attempted to explain the complex process of second language acquisition (SLA). The popular schools of thought including the structuralist /behaviorist position, the nativist position, and the constructivist position introduced some remarkable attempts to analyze this mesmerizing phenomenon. In fact, these different positions aim to explain the nature of second language acquisition but do not necessary stress on the connection between age and language development. In many instances, we …

Teaching Computer-Assisted Translation In The 21st Century, Uwe Muegge Jan 2013

Teaching Computer-Assisted Translation In The 21st Century, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Offering translation technology courses is easier than it ever was: Cloud-based learning management systems and translation management systems offer educational institution the powerful tools they need to prepare future translation and localization professionals for the demands of the 21st century. In the past, instructors teaching translation technology would use a different application for each educational task: One for the distribution of learning materials, another for collaborative learning, and yet another for testing; not to mention separate terminology management, translation memory, machine translation, and project management tools. In a cloud-based translation technology environment, it is possible to reduce the number of …

Implementing Language Policy For Deaf Students In A Texas School District, Sarah Compton Jan 2013

Implementing Language Policy For Deaf Students In A Texas School District, Sarah Compton

Sarah Compton

Language policy implementation is a complex, multilayered process. Understanding this process can be achieved by identifying the agents, layers, and processes of language planning and policy activities, analyzing the layers independently, and examining the relations among the layers. Considering these dimensions, this article explicates how U.S. special education policy functions as de facto language policy for deaf students. Turning to implementation in local contexts, data from a larger multi-sited, qualitative case study of a Texas school district is presented to show how individuals act as policy-implementing agents and how their beliefs about language and education policy influences the policy discourses …

The High Impact Of Education Abroad: College Students' Engagement In International Experiences And The Development Of Intercultural Competencies, Michael J. Stebleton, Krista M. Soria, Blythe Cherney

Michael J. Stebleton

This multi-institutional study attempts to discover whether different international activities in which students participate yield different outcomes for the development of students’ global and intercultural competencies. The five international travel and study abroad measures analyzed include students’ participation in a university study abroad program; study abroad program affiliated with another college or university; travel abroad for cross-cultural experiences or informal education; travel abroad for a service learning, volunteer, or work experience; and travel abroad for recreation. The research question that guides this inquiry is as follows: controlling for other factors, is participation in these five types of international travel activities …

A Study Of The Language & Cultural Challenges Facing Business And Legal Studies Faculty In The Ever-Expanding Global Classroom, Glen M. Vogel Jan 2013

A Study Of The Language & Cultural Challenges Facing Business And Legal Studies Faculty In The Ever-Expanding Global Classroom, Glen M. Vogel

Glen M Vogel

More than 690,000 foreign students studied in the United States during the 2009-10 academic year – a 17% increase in just two years. As these non-native English-speaking students continue to pour into our nation’s educational institutions, one question many educators have is: are these international students adequately prepared for the language and cultural demands they will face when they are competing in the classroom and in the job market with their U.S. born counterparts? While it is a common belief that foreign students arrive with strong academic credentials, this does not reflect their grasp of the English language or their …
