Noticeably absent from the recent pronouncements of the “death” of multiculturalism in Germany, including Chancellor Angela Merkel’s own conclusion that the policy had “utterly failed,” has been any interest to seriously examine, let alone address, the reasons for such a failure.

Assessing The Impact Of Short-Term Study Abroad, Susan Carley, R. Keith Tudor

Participation in short-term study abroad programs has dramatically increased in recent years. Little empirical research exists on learning outcomes associated with short-duration study tours, however. This study examines the impact of a study tour on the perceptions of American college students following a 2-week tour of Mexico. Based on measures of pre- and posttrip perceptions of the host country, students were found to have significantly changed following a brief overseas stay. Pretrip perceptions were also compared with the perceptions of a control group of students who did not participate in study abroad to determine the influence self selection bias might …

This study analyzes the role that children’s literature plays in acquiring critical tools and deconstructing the internalized sense of worthlessness and oppression that Latinos living in poverty might experience. The goal is to provide literacy spaces and critical tools for both, teachers and students from marginalized and oppressed backgrounds, as Paulo Freire and Donaldo Macedo suggest, to become aware of one’s reality and act upon our world. This intends to engage students in dialogue and reflection, in order to critically analyze and understand issues of social, economic and political injustice and inequities; and deconstruct their internalized sense of worthlessness and …
