Physicist Herman Brenner White was born in Tuskegee, Alabama on September 28, 1948. He attended Macon County public schools and developed a great interest in science at an early age. Growing up so close to the Tuskegee Institute, White was able to talk to the professors there about science. In 1966, he graduated from the Tuskegee Institute High School. He decided to attend Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana for his undergraduate studies where he obtained his B.A. degree in physics in 1970. During graduate school at Michigan State University. White split his time at Michigan State's Cyclotron Laboratory in East …

The Effect Of Parental Participation On The Academic Achievement Of Female English As A Second Language Middle School Students In The Persian Gulf, Nada I. Baydoun

A quantitative correlational study explored the relationship between parental participation and academic achievement. Data were collected from 42 parents of female ESL students in the Persian Gulf region. Although results indicated a non-significant correlation between reported parental involvement and students’ academic averages overall, it found significant correlation for a sub-sample of Saudi parents.

Practitioner Journal Articles

This article focuses on the assessment needs that are unique to English learners (ELs) and provides a comprehensive set of recommendations regarding their equitable and fair assessment. Specific recommendations are provided for when to assess ELs, accommodations for ELs, and the budget and infrastructure that necessary to support these accommodations. The authors expect that these recommendations resonate with state leaders and policymakers as the state of California transitions to a new state assessment system.

The framework of culturally relevant pedagogy was used to explore how Iraqi refugee students defined academic success, described their optimal learning environment, and remained engaged in college despite cultural differences. Knowledge gained through this research encourages positive social change to embrace diversity and help newcomers adapt to American educational systems.

This qualitative case study adds to the Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) research base on culturally sensitive practices when internationalizing counselor education. It examines why and then how Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) school and mental health counselors synthesize Western mental health with Buddhist philosophy and practices.

Historically, White people, and by default whiteness (i.e., White racial hegemony/White supremacy), have played a central role in determining Black people’s 1 access to education in the United States (Anderson, 1988; Du Bois, 1973/2001; Woodson, 1933/1993). This article presents highlights of professional development efforts for teachers in Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classrooms occurring throughout the state and through a collaborative effort by researchers from the Center for Equity for English Learners (CEEL) at Loyola Marymount University. The article begins by identifying the various statewide efforts for professional development for TK teachers, followed by a brief review of the literature on early literacy development for diverse learners.
