This dissertation delves into the profound impact of the Second Great Awakening on American higher education and its enduring social consequences. Examining the period from the late eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century, the research uncovers the core belief that drove the Awakening—that America and its citizens were chosen for a divine purpose, endeavoring to manifest the kingdom of heaven on Earth. It explores how Protestant-led revivalism and social reform movements fueled by this core belief influenced the establishment and evolution of American higher education. The Radical Practice Of “Hanging Out”: China’S University Student Dissidents, Kyle Chong

Race and Pedagogy Journal: Teaching and Learning for Justice

This interdisciplinary paper advances existing empirical research on the longevity of anti-state university student protests in the People’s Republic of China. This paper contributes ethnographic data from Beijing and Fuzhou university students to yield a Marxian critique of Chinese authoritarianism. This paper asserts that empowering identity development and subversive scholarship, or the use of critical scholarship to transmit critical consciousness of political injustice, in Chinese universities creates more durable resistance against Chinese authoritarianism. This paper concludes that methodological and tactical shifts can similarly sustain American student protest.

Abstract: The student protests of the late 1960s and early 1970s were the most widespread in American history. Towards the end of the 1960s student protest tactics shifted from relatively peaceful rallies and sit-ins to more radical tactics, often involving disruption, property destruction and violence. Similar to many other campuses across the county, Buffalo State also experienced incidents of student protest in the late 1960s and early 1970s. There were protests that took action against what the protestors viewed as the administration's repressive practices and policies. There was a brief article about racial troubles at Hope High School in Providence that was from a publication called EXTRA. Comics, ads, letters and art exhibits were also mentioned.
