[Excerpt] "When Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection in 1859, it sparked some of the most contentious debates in American intellectual history, debates that continue to rage today. Although these debates have numerous political ramifications, the question posed in this paper is narrow: Does the Establishment Clause permit a particular assessment of current evolutionary theory – intelligent design (“ID”) – to be taught as science in American elementary and secondary public schools? This booklet contains a documentation of the first round of Acting for the Future which uses participative drama workshops and a professional theatre performance to promote positive mental health and suicide prevention. The first round was implemented by Smashing Times Theatre Company from January to December 2005 and funded by Area Development Management and Dormant Account Fund Disbursement Board. The project is still on going. The booklet also contains a full curriculum for two drama workshop models used to promote positive mental health and suicide prevention, along with terms of reference and lists of recommended reading and support organisations. This article analyzes a language revitalization program implemented in an elementary classroom on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, outside of Phoenix, Arizona. The authors created the program under the assumption that classroom pedagogy cannot help students learn their native language without everyday usage of the O'odham and Pipash languages at home. The authors provide the social and historical context for the community, and the language policies applied to the two tribes, and then they provide a detailed look at strenghts and weaknesses of implementing a language community model in the classroom. As Latinas with diverse biographies in and out of the university,1 we share a commitment to actively engage with all of our communities. As students and teachers, we are expected to leave our personal lives out of our "intellectual" workspaces, causing feelings of isolation and fragmentation (hooks, 1994). We are concerned with the ways we can maintain a sense of connection and wholeness for our well-being and that of our communities. 'Subterranean Evil' And 'Tumultuous Riot' In Buganda: Authority And Alienation At King's College, Budo, 1942, Carol Summers

Staff petitions, sexual and disciplinary scandal and open riot pushed Buganda's leaders to close Budo College on the eve of Kabaka (King) Muteesa II's coronation. The upheaval at the school included a teachers' council that pro-claimed ownership of the school, student leaders who manipulated the headmaster through scandal and school clubs and associations that celebrated affiliation over discipline. Instead of enacting and celebrating imperial partnership and order in complex, well-choreographed coronation rituals, the school's disruption delineated the fractures and struggles over rightful authority, order and patronage within colonial Buganda, marking out a future of tumultuous political transition.

Does Culture Matter? : Exploring The Relationships Among Parenting A Child With Disabilities, Cultural Identification, And Stress In A Group Of European American And Immigrant Latino Families, Ximena P. Suarez-Sousa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this correlational exploratory study was to delve into the experience of raising a child with disabilities by investigating the parents' level of stress and the role played by culture, acculturation, and various demographic variables suggested by the literature to influence stress were included. A purposive sample composed of 38 primarily undocumented immigrant Latino parents and 32 European American parents of children with disabilities was recruited from community agencies in a Midwest state. The most frequent disabilities were orthopedic impairments, pervasive developmental disorders, and mental retardation.
