Writing Creatively In First Grade, Susan Grant Raye Jan 1984

Writing Creatively In First Grade, Susan Grant Raye

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Learning to write their own words increases students' success in learning to read, provides practice in thinking skills, increases their self-concept and provides early positive attitudes about writing.

However, most writing done in first grade classrooms today consists mainly of copying from the blackboard. This is a tedious and boring task for first graders, and gives them bad attitudes about writing as they begin their school careers. Many teachers don't require young students to write their own words because of the students' inability to spell words and form grammatically correct sentences. However, if a teacher is accepting of the students' …

The Effects Of Voluntary Aerobic Exercise And Exercise Incentives On Aerobic Capacity And Blood Lipid Levels In College Age Men And Women, Tamara Jean Shanholtzer Jan 1984

The Effects Of Voluntary Aerobic Exercise And Exercise Incentives On Aerobic Capacity And Blood Lipid Levels In College Age Men And Women, Tamara Jean Shanholtzer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Most authorities on exercise agree that regular vigorous endurance type activity results in aerobic fitness (7, 10, 17, 36, 37). Rhythmic repetitive and dynamic activities using large muscle groups would include such aerobic exercise as Jogging, walking, swimming, cycling, tennis, basketball, racquetball, and soccer (1, 7, 10, 17). In addition, cardiovascular fitness has been suggested to be postively linked with a reduction in the incidence of coronary heart disease (1, 11, 36, 38, 53). Sometimes, problems that lead to adult illnesses are the result of lifestyles that deploy early in childhood (11). Health education procedures have been used to provide …

Development Of West Indies College, 1907-1960: A Historical Study, Anthon C. Francis Jan 1984

Development Of West Indies College, 1907-1960: A Historical Study, Anthon C. Francis

Dissertations

Problem

There is no written history of West Indies College (WIC). What little is cited in periodicals, magazines, Palm Leaves, and other sources about this institution is insignificant, incomplete, and sometimes incorrect. For over half a century, WIC has been preparing workers for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Until 1984, however, no comprehensive history was written on the development of this important institution of higher learning.

Method

The documentary-historical method was employed in this research. Books, periodicals, school bulletins, unpublished manuscripts, board minutes, school reports and agendas, school calendars, private files, correspondence, and other relevant documents as well as oral interviews …

Indonesia Union College : A Historical Study Of A Seventh-Day Adventist Institution, Rajoaman Nainggolan

Dissertations

Problem

The first Seventh-day Adventist training school established in Indonesia was the Netherlands East Indies Training School (Indonesia Union College after 1962) founded in 1929. The school has since grown considerably and achieved university status, but no comprehensive history of it has been written. This lack points to a need for a systematic examination of the development of Seventh-day Adventist higher education in Indonesia. This study reconstructs the history of this institution from 1929 to 1970.

Method

The documentary-historical method, based on published and unpublished materials, was used. Materials included books, periodicals, school bulletins, minutes of the Indonesia Union Mission, …

A Theological Assessment Of Paulo Freire's View Of Education In Terms Of The Perspective Of Juergen Moltmann, Janice Davies Jan 1984

A Theological Assessment Of Paulo Freire's View Of Education In Terms Of The Perspective Of Juergen Moltmann, Janice Davies

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Education helps to shape the values and attitudes of students, and is therefore important in determining the values of society. For this reason, it is important for teachers to be aware of the philosophy of education which informs their teaching methods. It is also helpful if they are aware of other philosophies of education in order to get some perspective on their own views. To this end I have taken a critical look at the philosophy of Paulo Freire, an educator with excellent credentials who has some throught-provoking views on education. He is a Christian so he can provide a …
