World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations
Abstract
This paper takes on issues related to the assessment in Content-Based Instruction (CBI). The first point talks about the research needs for Japanese CBI in regards to issues over assessment. The second point presents assessment strategies towards implementation of CBI. There have been a few reports from research studies that have demonstrated the gains in one’s language ability, such as in Spanish and Indonesian. However, very little is reported on the effect of CBI in Japanese. CBI is receiving increasing attention in the field of second/foreign language education. It is therefore critical to investigate the effect …

Affirmative Acts: The Need For American Black Theatre In The Classroom, Angela Batrice Brooks-Van Niel
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this study is to reveal that racial inequality in American Theatre is still in existence: that while our country has gained some level of integration, several societal and artistic echelons evidence a remaining tendency towards discrimination--a separatist sense of culture that unfortunately informs elementary and secondary classrooms all across the United States as well as still exists in the general arts.

The Effectiveness Of Direct Vocabulary Instruction Strategies To Increase The Comprehension Of Fifth Grade Students During Social Studies Lessons, Octavio Rodolfo Gamez
Theses Digitization Project
Designed to answer the overarching question: does the implementation of direct vocabulary instruction strategies improve the comprehension of fifth grade students during the social studies lessons? Results showed that students who received the direct instruction in vocabulary words benefited greatly and in most cases doubled their …
The Most Effective Way To Teach Spelling, Mandy Lea Strange
The Most Effective Way To Teach Spelling, Mandy Lea Strange
Theses Digitization Project
The research in this project shows that spelling needs to be taught through patterns, rhymes and the use of analogies. Weekly spelling tests are effective to assess spelling patterns, instead of useing a pre-determined collection of random words. Additionally, spelling needs to be taught within writing, not as a completely separate subject.

Teaching Vocabulary Through Integrated Curriculum Improves Reading Comprehension, Linda Carol Cox

Creative Drama As A Source For Literacy Development, B. Joanne Kirkner
Theses Digitization Project
Students achieve knowledge by different means. I find that a child allowed to learn from one's personal style finds purpose in learning and develops a desire to read. With this in mind I have designed this project to be used as a resource for teachers wanting to implement creative drama, in the classroom, as an avenue for improving reading abilities of low-progress readers.
