Virtual Newspaper Theatre: Zoom As A Theatrical Playing Space, Nabra Nelson

Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal

This article presents findings from a virtual Newspaper Theatre workshop that took place via Zoom on May 5, 2020 through Seattle Rep. Nelson reflects on the way that the constraints of the Zoom format can add meaning to Theatre of the Oppressed performance techniques in the era of quarantine and social distancing due to COVID-19. Influential Pedagogies Using Digital Fabrication Laboratories Onarchitectural Education, Marwan Halabi

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Innovation in advanced architectural design is imposing a revolution in ways to materialize contemporary buildings of geometrical complexities. In the professional field, such trend is demanding a constant update on the tools required to execute jobs. At the academic level, digital fabrication laboratories are becoming a place to fuse ideas with rationalized principles of construction in addition to helping students visualise the future challenges in the architectural practice. This paper tries to argue the influences on architectural education by the leading function of digital fabrication laboratories, with the prospect of presenting practical assessments of transforming digital information into analogue materiality, …

Digital Tools And Robotics In Architecture: Envisioning The Future Ineducation And Practice, Marwan Halabi

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

In a world advancing at a vertiginous speed, technology is directly affecting almost every single aspect of contemporary human life. It is therefore crucial nowadays for both the professional and the educational sectors to constantly update themselves with the latest trends in their fields. Once students graduate, they should first be familiar with the needs of the highly competitive market, and at the same time to be prepared for challenges facing the practice in order to improve it and stand at a higher level from competitors. For such reason, students need to be aware that high tech tools are vital …

Enhancing Architecture Education With The Use Of Technology, Rania Basheer, Fatima Kazimi Oct 2020

Enhancing Architecture Education With The Use Of Technology, Rania Basheer, Fatima Kazimi

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

This paper presents effective ideas for using technology in design studio courses. These courses are based on some small well defined projects during the semester, in each of these projects students will pass through design process contain some clear steps. The attempt of this paper is to integrate technological methods in each stage of the design process. The paper first will outlines (agree on) five main stages in design process starting from research stage until the final jury presentation and then comes the faculties’ summative assessment. In each step technological modern methods are introduced. E-learning-podcasting, social media, smart boards, virtual …

The Economics Of Artificial Intelligence: A Primer For Social Studies Educators, Scott Wolla

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

This paper provides a framework for understanding the economic effects of automation and artificial intelligence (AI). First, it reviews how physical capital interacts with labor in the context of automation and AI. Next, it discusses recent advances in AI and potential economic outcomes such as job market polarization and income inequality. It then describes the role education has played in previous economic transitions and the role it will likely play as technology advances. Finally, the paper identifies key economic concepts and teaching resources that social studies educators can integrate into their instruction to help students understand the economic effects of …

Para(Noia)Metric: Architecture Beyond The Edge Of Rationality, Marwan Halabi Jun 2020

Para(Noia)Metric: Architecture Beyond The Edge Of Rationality, Marwan Halabi

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Nowadays, efforts are being tremendously put in order to facilitate opportunities for the fourth industrial revolution to play a real role in the destiny of architectural design and construction. Parametric design and digital fabrication are some of the tools that have been contributing in this uprising for the last two decades. The amount of solutions developed so far has, sometimes out of curiosity, been used in alternative ways that occasionally lead to highly appreciated outcomes, and sometimes immersed us in worlds of rationally controlled complexities that might be not so useful. Some of the highly sophisticated computational design processes strengths …

Rethinking Gaming & Representation Within Digital Pedagogy: An Instructor’S Guide, Anthony Wheeler Jun 2020

Rethinking Gaming & Representation Within Digital Pedagogy: An Instructor’S Guide, Anthony Wheeler

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This work fully analyzes the creation process and implementation of a deeply-structured social commentary in the form of a digital interactive-fiction, created in the open software known as Twine. My co-developer, Raven Gomez, and I created a game that explores the challenges of navigating spaces within higher education as someone who identifies as something considered to be “other” by the standards of the common Western curriculum. Once the infrastructure of the product itself is outlined, this work follows students in an English Composition I course throughout their experiences creating digital interactive-fiction games based on pivotal moments in their lives that …

Nowadays there are many different types of family compared to 50 years ago when the ‘nuclear’ family, considered the ‘normal’ one, was the most dominant type. Affected by the advancement of many aspects, particularly technology, communication and globalization, the main changes have been changes to marriage and partnership as well as changes to children and families. In respect to changes to marriage fewer people, who are getting married later in life, are getting married nowadays with higher divorce rate. However, in regard to partnership, more couples are now living together without marriage –co-habitation with an increased number of same sex …
