Women’S Ways Of Leading? A Qualitative Content Analysis To Determine Leadership Messages Contained In Literature Of National Panhellenic Conference Groups, Andrea M. Fechner

This study documented the leadership messages sent to women in 16 of the National Panhellenic Conference groups' official literature. The purpose of the study was to provide detailed descriptive analysis using excerpts from the official literature to show both traditional and non-traditional (women's ways of leading) theoretical themes as well as to determine the use of followership versus leadership messages to women. The approach to this study was the use of qualitative content analysis whereby messages were collapsed into larger theme categories. A Midsummer Night's Dream--A Creole Creation: Directing Shakespeare In A High School Setting, Laurel Renee Kash

A full-length production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream was rehearsed and performed at Sunset High School in Portland, Oregon. The production was set in New Orleans during Mardi Gras in 1926. Research was conducted on Shakespeare's life, appropriate acting methods, and the play's historical and cultural context including lighting properties, setting, music, and costumes. Design concept statements were developed, the play was produced, and the experience was considered critically, both as an artistic production and as a learning experience.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand why women from Scott County, Tennessee, left home to attain the baccalaureate degree and returned home to live and/or work. More specifically, understanding (1) the educational aspirations, motivations, and discouragements prior to attending college; (2) the educational persistence, motivations, and discouragements while attending college; (3) and the reasons for returning to Scott County after attaining the baccalaureate degree. Creative Writing, Storyboarding And Video Script Writing As Techniques To Stimulate The Development Of Imagination And Imagery To Aid In Reading Comprehension, Ellen Settlemyer Bartelli

The relationship between imagination, pretend play, and reading comprehension was researched through the literature. A curriculum unit was designed featuring two exercises using imagination and imagery in conjunction with the book Night by Elie Wiesel. The first exercise asked students to write a 10 entry journal synthesizing information from a variety of sources into a first person narrative of a Jewish child. The second exercise calls for student groups to write, storyboard, and film a scene from Night on videotape.

A Model Music Curriculum For Elementary-Level Students In Taiwan, Mei-Fang Ho

The purpose of this project was to develop a model music curriculum for elementary-level students in Taiwan. With the current music curriculum utilized recently in Taiwan, this project will help the elementary-level students to develop their music potentials. In addition, teachers can educate students according to their level oflearning at different periods of time. To accomplish this purpose, a review ofrelated literature was conducted. Additionally, selected materials were obtained and adapted for use.

The purpose of this project was to write a play that could be used as a teaching tool for addressing multicultural issues in educational curricula. The literature review suggests that dramatic activities can be effective teaching strategies to address multicultural and diversity issues. The one-act play, Irene, is set in a middle-class American neighborhood and focuses on the conflict within a broken home.

The Mathematics Of Sound: Integrating Music Into A Math Curriculum, Shawn William Meacham

The purpose of this project was to develop prototype lesson plans that connects and integrates musical and mathematical concepts at the 5th grade level. Both musical and mathematical concepts can be enhanced when studying the correlation between the two subjects. This project will provide lesson plans and activities using the Washington State Essential Academic Leaming Requirements as a basis for the concepts being taught. A cun-iculum framework for a one-year eleventh grade United States History course was designed. The Framework included the development of nine themes at the unit level and one theme at the lesson level. Goals and objectives were developed at the course, unit, and lesson level. The potential for thematic instruction to improve history teaching was discussed, as well as the challenges of designing thematic curriculum.

This paper examines both practical considerations for sojourners who are planning to work overseas in South Korea’s English Program in Korea (EPIK) and reflections on the author’s experiences with this program. The first section of the paper presents pre-departure, arrival and descriptions of what the school and housing might consist of, followed by reflections on the author’s direct experiences through three paradigms: world view, intercultural adjustment, and culture shock. Educational Brain Research As Compared With E.G. White's Counsels To Educators, Linda Bryant Caviness

Purpose. The purpose of this study was threefold: to review current, education-relevant brain research; to review the educational writings of Ellen G. White for major emerging themes/principles; and to compare these findings for similarities and differences.

Method and Results. Using an inductive process, the synthesis and comparison revealed 15 themes from brain research and 12 principles from White's writings from the middle 1800s and early 1900s.

Comparison of the two lists revealed alignment on eight themes/principles, nonalignment on three themes/principles, and partial-alignment on seven themes/principles.

Two control groups and two experimental groups of missionaries and teachers participated in a study comparing a grammar-based method of teaching to a context-based method. The study lasted for two weeks during June 1997. Each classroom was recorded using a timing-based observation system that captured 13 missionary and teacher language behaviors. The behaviors were recorded in real time and later evaluated to determine in which classroom setting the most real communication occurred. A second purpose was to determine the effectiveness of teacher training with respect to teachers in the experimental group. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first comparative study conducted regarding the student publications for the three Iowa Regents' universities. The data collected shows that the three publications are not as different in terms of content as many of their readers seem to believe. As the data reflects, the Northern Iowan is significantly more campus-centered in its coverage. However, the difference is not so significant that the staff of the Northern Iowan could not increase its national and international coverage to make it more comparable to the other two newspapers. Nigerian university student-affairs serviceshave been characterized by negative campus activism, violent demonstrations, and the destruction of lives and properties, the result of which led to the closing down of many Nigerian universities. Thus far, little empirical data exist regarding the student personnel servicesavailable to students at Nigerian universities, the importance of student-affairs services, or the level of student satisfaction with these services.
