It was also intended to provide a “multimodal” (writing, speaking, digital) approach to composition to reflect best practices and pedagogical innovations in the teaching of composition and communication. This report will cover the specific plan for the OER, what was accomplished, what assessment efforts were undertaken, and areas for further development. Findings …

Examining Assumptions About Student Engagement In The Classroom: A Faculty Learning Community’S Yearlong Journey, Marjolein Oele
Examining Assumptions About Student Engagement In The Classroom: A Faculty Learning Community’S Yearlong Journey, Marjolein Oele
Philosophy
Over the past twenty years, the term “student engagement” has become a primary means for orienting faculty and administrators around pedagogic improvements and curriculum development. The increasing prevalence of technology in educational settings and the ways it alters more traditional classroom formats, student-teacher interactions, and research methods suggest that engagement may now look and function differently than in the past. This article describes the reflective journey of a yearlong Faculty Learning Community (FLC) at a private, urban Jesuit university on the topic of student engagement. It investigates and debates current thinking on the topic, assesses methods of measurement, and shares …

"Does Jesus Want Us To Be Poor?" Student Perspectives Of The Religious Program At A Cristo Rey Network School, Ursula Aldana
"Does Jesus Want Us To Be Poor?" Student Perspectives Of The Religious Program At A Cristo Rey Network School, Ursula Aldana
School of Education Faculty Research
The structure of Catholic schools improves achievement by providing multiple opportunities for face-to-face interaction, the development of meaningful relationships between students, teachers, and other members of the school community, and a shared set of beliefs among all school members (Bryk, Lee, & Holland, 1993). Despite a substantiating body of research for this assertion, few empirical studies exist on how the religious program might impact the intrapersonal and interpersonal development of students. The Cristo Rey Network (CRN) of schools was developed in response to the material realities of students and families living in Chicago (Kearney, 2006). The leaders of the network, …
Communists And The Classroom: Radicals In U.S. Education, 1930-1960, Jonathan Hunt
Communists And The Classroom: Radicals In U.S. Education, 1930-1960, Jonathan Hunt
Rhetoric and Language Faculty Publications and Research
Concern about Communists in education was a central preoccupation in the U.S. through the middle decades of the twentieth century. Focusing on post-secondary and adult education and on fields related to composition and rhetoric, this essay offers an overview of the surprisingly diverse contexts in which Communist educators worked. Some who taught in Communist- sponsored "separatist" institutions pioneered the kinds of radical pedagogical theories now most often attributed to Paulo Freire. Communist educators who taught in "mainstream" institutions, however, less often saw their pedagogy as a mode of political action; their activism was deployed mainly in civic life rather than …

Cross-Cultural And Multilingual Encounters: Composing Difference In Transnational Contexts, Tika Lamsal
Rhetoric and Language Faculty Publications and Research
A rapid increase in the population of cross-cultural and multilingual students and faculty in the U.S. universities has spurred the need to develop a culturally and linguistically more inclusive pedagogy in the teaching of writing. By analyzing the writing of a couple of multilingual and multicultural students from a freshman composition class in a U.S. university, this article explores the ways that help facilitate the writing process of such students. Stressing the value of students’ previous experiences based on their social, cultural, and language differences, the essay argues for the need to recognize and promote the use of multilingual and …
Asian American Coping Attitudes, Sources, And Practices: Implications For Indigenous Counseling Strategies, Christine J. Yeh, Yu-Wei Wang
Asian American Coping Attitudes, Sources, And Practices: Implications For Indigenous Counseling Strategies, Christine J. Yeh, Yu-Wei Wang
School of Education Faculty Research
Coping attitudes, sources, and practices were assessed within and across a sample of Asian American college and graduate students from four ethnic groups: Chinese, Korean, Filipino, and Indian (N = 470). We found that Asian Americans tended to endorse coping sources and practices that emphasized talking with familial and social relations rather than professionals such as counselors and doctors. Korean Americans were significantly more likely to cope with problems by engaging in religious activities. Counseling implications are discussed.
