Unravelling Power And Privilege In The Academy: A Personal Account, Timothy Mossman
Unravelling Power And Privilege In The Academy: A Personal Account, Timothy Mossman
International Journal of Christianity and English Language Teaching
This article explores the author’s privileged identities as a White, male researcher and English language educator in the context of relevant critical literature. I aim to understand how my privileged identities granted by race, gender, societal placement, and language interact with my identity as an evangelical Christian and how these identities impact my research and practice in working with multilingual transnational youth in a Canadian university setting. Highlighting the importance of reflexivity in qualitative research and its potential impact on both researcher and student identities, I probe my acquired identities (unearned societal placement) and ascribed identities (spiritual gifts, passions, abilities, …
Elt And Empowerment: Questions, Observations, And Reflections For Christian Educators, Michael Lessard-Clouston
Elt And Empowerment: Questions, Observations, And Reflections For Christian Educators, Michael Lessard-Clouston
International Journal of Christianity and English Language Teaching
As a field, English language teaching (ELT) has come under attack from a number of critical practitioners. In the classroom, English language teachers aim to empower our students by helping them improve their English abilities and skills. Yet there are discrepancies in terms of who learns and uses English for various purposes. Are English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) teachers helping, or are we part of the ‘problem’ in ELT, as critics suggest? This article poses four questions in order for readers to consider issues in ELT and empowerment. In doing so, it summarizes observations from both the …
Exploring The Role Of Spirituality In The Ecology Of Language Learning, Teresa Lin
Exploring The Role Of Spirituality In The Ecology Of Language Learning, Teresa Lin
International Journal of Christianity and English Language Teaching
With the presence of many Christian missionaries in the field of TESOL, numerous educators have raised concerns about the ethical issues surrounding evangelistic outreach via English language teaching (ELT). Christian English Teachers (CETs) in the field of TESOL have faced criticism for manipulation of student-teacher relationships, unethical religious coercion, and cultural insensitivity. Current positivist views render religious discussions in the classroom as detrimental to ELT. While proselytizing via ELT is a serious ethical issue, the backlash against religion and spiritual beliefs is also quite alarming. Disregard for the spiritual underpinnings motivating and influencing the way students learn limits how complex …

Living Out The Christian Faith In The Writing Classroom, Icy Lee
Living Out The Christian Faith In The Writing Classroom, Icy Lee
International Journal of Christianity and English Language Teaching
This article addresses three questions from the perspective of a Christian writing teacher educator: (1) How can we live out our Christian faith and values in the teaching of writing? (2) How can we help students become more aware of issues of spirituality and develop God-given abilities through writing? (3) How can we encourage students to write in ways that are pleasing to God? To address the first question, I draw mainly upon my own research on feedback and classroom writing assessment in L2 writing, as well as my experience as a writing teacher educator in Hong Kong, and address …

Disproportionality In Special Education : A Persistent Reality For African American Students, Denise Reid
Disproportionality In Special Education : A Persistent Reality For African American Students, Denise Reid
Justice, Spirituality & Education Journal
The disproportionate representation of African Americans in special education continues to be a prevalent, disturbing, and heavily debated problem, and possibly the most long-standing issue in the special education field. African American students are overrepresented in three disability categories (emotionally behavioral disorder, intellectual disability, and specific learning disability), all of which are prone to subjective judgment. The current literature indicates the following reasons as possible explanations for this persistent problem: failed general education system, inequities in special education referral and identification process, test bias, as well as a lack of access to effective instruction. This paper provides definitions of disproportionate …

Open The Door Of Christian Education To All Students : A Call For Christian School Reform, Tammy Bachrach
Open The Door Of Christian Education To All Students : A Call For Christian School Reform, Tammy Bachrach
Justice, Spirituality & Education Journal
Does biblical justice include people with disabilities? Like the orphan and widow of Christ’s day, people with disability have historically been marginalized, frequently experiencing poverty and isolation. A biblical worldview of disability and a Christian community, which seeks to have the mind of Christ, ought to challenge the exclusion and injustices people with disability experience in our communities. This article will interweave the author’s personal experience as a Christian member of the disability community, disability studies scholarship, and a biblical worldview of disability to examine the current practice of excluding people with disabilities from Christian school education. The goal is …
The Book Of Acts As A Case Study : Examining The Ministry Of Reconciliation, Glen Kinoshita
The Book Of Acts As A Case Study : Examining The Ministry Of Reconciliation, Glen Kinoshita
Justice, Spirituality & Education Journal
This literature review identifies ethnic diversity and reconciliation as a consistent theme throughout the book of Acts and explores some of the sociological, educational, and theological factors that help identify reconciliation as a ministry of the early church. This meta-analysis explores foundational concepts that develop an understanding of biblical reconciliation, examines the concept of “ethnicity” as it arises out of the biblical text, and describes the historical context and backdrop of the time of Jesus and the early church. After having established these concepts, the author will walk through the book of Acts, processing the various narratives with these concepts, …

The Impact Of Gentrification On Faith-Based Organizations, Orvic Pada
The Impact Of Gentrification On Faith-Based Organizations, Orvic Pada
Justice, Spirituality & Education Journal
Urban renewal and gentrification are current catchphrases in many urban initiatives, mostly centering on housing development, new urbanism, and community building. By focusing on re-envisioning community building, development, and social services in urban contexts, religious institutions and organizations adapt to urban changes and adjust accordingly with various initiatives to address social needs, put their spirituality and faith into practice, and attract adherents. This paper is the theoretical piece of a larger work in progress that provides the context for understanding the changes brought about by gentrification in “inner cities” and how religious organizations operate within the changing sociological landscape brought …
Faith And Learning In Action: Tangible Connections Between Biblical Integration And Living The Christian Life, Calvin Roso
Faith And Learning In Action: Tangible Connections Between Biblical Integration And Living The Christian Life, Calvin Roso
Justice, Spirituality & Education Journal
I am at my best being and serving in the trenches – having my boots on the ground – mentoring students to meet the needs of others. As a Christian educator, I feel compelled to help others make a sustainable impact on the lives of those who cannot help themselves. The desire to help others is an important part of professional and personal journey in understanding faith and learning integration (FLI). In the past I have felt that faith and learning integration was a great technique to train students to help others. I also believe that the integration of faith …
