Self-Generated Notations: A Suggested Methodology Of Introducing Movement Literacy, ‪Shlomit Ofer‬‏

Journal of Movement Arts Literacy Archive (2013-2019)

The purpose of this paper is to present a method aimed at enabling the acquisition of movement literacy in a communicative-creative manner that does not require long-term expertise. The paper opens with a brief history and description of Eshkol Wachman Movement Notation (EWMN), followed by a discussion of the notion of Movement Literacy and its defined components–conceptualization, representation and kinesthetic performance, as have emerged within the EWMN system. Two additional educational ideas are also mentioned–the constructionism and the independent development of visual representations by learners. Together, these ideas establish a theoretical background for a non-formal study, in which dance-teaching students …

Voices Of Notators: Approaches To Writing A Score--Special Issue, Teresa L. Heiland Jun 2018

Voices Of Notators: Approaches To Writing A Score--Special Issue, Teresa L. Heiland

Journal of Movement Arts Literacy Archive (2013-2019)

In this special issue of Voices of Notators: Approaches to Writing a Score, eight authors share their unique process of creating and implementing their approach to notating movement, and they describe how that process transforms them as researchers, analysts, dancers, choreographers, communicators, and teachers. These researchers discuss the need to capture, to form, to generate, and to communicate ideas using a written form of dance notation so that some past, present, or future experience can be better understood, directed, informed, and shared. They are organized roughly into themes motivated by relationships between them and their methodological similarities and differences. …

Labankido©: The Evaluation Of A Multimedia Tool Designed For The Teaching Of Basic Skills And Concepts In Dance Education., Aspasia Dania, Vasiliki Tyrovola, Maria Koutsouba, Dimitrios Hatziharistos Jan 2013

Labankido©: The Evaluation Of A Multimedia Tool Designed For The Teaching Of Basic Skills And Concepts In Dance Education., Aspasia Dania, Vasiliki Tyrovola, Maria Koutsouba, Dimitrios Hatziharistos

Aspasia Dania

According to modern learning theories, multimedia applications can serve as media for the simultaneous activation of the dancer’s visual and verbal system of receiving and processing incoming information relative with mo tor performance. The aim of the present research is the evaluation of the impact of a new computer multimedia application: Labankido© on beginner dance students’ performance.Labankido© is a ten unit computer tutorial specially designed for the needs of the Laban-Notation teaching method (Dania 2013), and according to the principles of Mayer’s Multimedia Learning Theory. Its main innovation is the use of Labanotation symbols (symbols for the notation and analysis …

A New Methodological Application Of The Laban Theory Of Movement Analysis In Greek Traditional Dance Education., Aspasia Dania, Vasiliki Tyrovola, Maria Koutsouba Jan 2013

A New Methodological Application Of The Laban Theory Of Movement Analysis In Greek Traditional Dance Education., Aspasia Dania, Vasiliki Tyrovola, Maria Koutsouba

Aspasia Dania

The aim of the present research is the presentation of a new method for teaching Greek traditional dance: the Laban-Notation teaching method. The proposed method combines the demonstration of the dance by the teacher with the rhythmic, motor and symbolic exploration of the four basic movement concepts: knowledge of body, spatial awareness, sense of effort, relationships, as these are defined by the Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) theory (Laban & Lawrence, 1974). The main innovation of the new method is the use of the Labanotation symbols for the representation of the four movement concepts and their inclusion in verbal-motor, visual-motor and …

The Use Of Technology In Movement And Dance Education: Recent Practices And Future Perspectives, Aspasia Dania, Dimitrios Hatziharistos, Maria Koutsouba, Vasiliki Tyrovola Jan 2011

The Use Of Technology In Movement And Dance Education: Recent Practices And Future Perspectives, Aspasia Dania, Dimitrios Hatziharistos, Maria Koutsouba, Vasiliki Tyrovola

Aspasia Dania

The study of the effectiveness of the use of technology in the teaching of motor skills has recently attracted the researchers’ interest to a great extent. The aim of this study is the analytical and critical presentation of the researches focusing on the application of technology on movement education with emphasis on physical and dance education. The predominant research finding is that although contemporary technological media are substantially advanced and innovative, they have not been incorporated in the classroom everyday learning practice yet. A prerequisite for the achievement of this goal is the researchers’ interest to be focused: a) on …

Proposal For A New Method For Teaching Fundamental Motor Skills, Aspasia Dania, Vasiliki Tyrovola, Maria Koutsouba Jan 2010

Proposal For A New Method For Teaching Fundamental Motor Skills, Aspasia Dania, Vasiliki Tyrovola, Maria Koutsouba

Aspasia Dania

During the period of acquisition and first practice of movement skills, learning becomes more effective when various sensory channels are used. According to the Dual Coding Theory, students as learners code both visually and verbally incoming information into knowledge that can be stored and retrieved for subsequent use. The aim of the present study is the proposal of a new method for the teaching of fundamental motor skills that will be depended on a visual coding of movement information. Particularly, the morphological method for the analysis of dance is the proposed method according to which graphic visual symbols will be …
