Edward Lee and Lulu McClain gave the gift of a new high school to the rural Appalachian community of Greenfield, Ohio, in 1915. Inspired in part by John Dewey’s Progressive theories of education, the school became the center of the community, both literally and figuratively, providing the best, most modern education for its students. The school was particularly unique in its focus on the arts, with its spaces carefully crafted and developed; its halls and classrooms filled with over 200 pieces of classic and original art, including murals, sculpture, and other works; and its curriculum inspired by art-based ideas of …

A Correlational Study Of Self-Regulation And Fine Arts In Education, Rachel D. Hendricks

Self-regulation positively relates to student behavior and achievement, and fine arts participation has demonstrated similar improvements in behavior and achievement. It was hypothesized that participation in school-based fine arts would positively correlate with self-regulation, and the intensity of students’ fine arts participation would also correlate with self-regulation. Students aged 15 to 19 were administered a self-regulation questionnaire. Responses from students currently participating in fine arts were compared to students with no fine arts participation to find if a relationship exists between fine arts and self-regulation. Discussions of aesthetics were found in writings of Plato and Aristotle and continue to this day. Philosophers have defined aesthetics as a theory of the beautiful. The primary objective of this study is to examine the possible advantages of incorporating the principles and strategies of whole language to a secondary art education curriculum. Reading, or the process of decoding symbols, is an integral part of the learning process. It is particularly pertinent to the three academically oriented components of Discipline-Based Art Education: art criticism, art history, and the study of aesthetics. The holistic strategies promoted by the whole language movement, may be characterized by an emphasis on written responses and experience-oriented, student-centered curriculum. This study examines the use of writing in art education and its possibilities for use in the four disciplines of DBAE. Teacher attitudes and associated behaviors with regard to these and related topics are assessed. It was expected that some teachers would favor a creativity- or art production-centered approach to the teaching of art over DBAE. Because writing can be viewed as an academic mode of learning, some apprehension was also expected from those who favor creativity and art production.
