A Three-Step Guide To Shut It Down In Your Social Science Class, Fatima Y. Van Hattum
Intersections: Critical Issues in Education
This satirical comic seeks to highlight various classroom power dynamics and colonial knowledge hierarchies in higher education. It also touches upon the pedagogies of shame that both students and educators often internalize and perpetuate in the classroom. In terms of the medium, a hand drawn comic, the intention is to utilize methods beyond those considered normative and traditional to academia, such as the written word, while still offering academic analysis and contribution to scholarship and discourse on education.

Although there are a significant number of Saudi females pursuing graduate degrees in Saudi Arabia and abroad, few studies have examined their educational experiences. This qualitative multi-case study examines the educational experiences of ten Saudi females who graduated with a master’s degree in an English language related field in two international contexts: American universities and Saudi universities. By conducting qualitative semi-structured interviews and document analysis, this study explored the challenges these two groups faced and the strategies they used to succeed in higher education institutions in the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. What Can We Learn From Adult Esl Students’ Responses To Children’S Literature?, Monique C. Stone

Some teachers face frequently changing populations of students, making it difficult to gain cultural knowledge that is important to support student learning. The aim of this study was to explore how adult language-learner students in intensive English programs (IEPs) respond to children’s picture books portraying their home countries or cultures. Reader response theory (Rosenblatt, 1995) and cultural scaffolding (Gay, 2002; i.e., the use of student culture to support student learning) are the initial frameworks upon which the study was developed. The ongoing international migration from developing countries to developed ones has led to a large presence of Diaspora population in developed countries. Many of those well-educated and established professionals and businessmen have felt a need to give back to their home countries. The impact of Diaspora in their home country has been realized mainly in four different areas: economic development through remittance, investment and trade; intellectual development via knowledge transfer and knowledge application; social development through philanthropy and volunteerism; and political development via diplomacy, lobbying, awareness raising and political participation.
Diaspora giving back mechanisms have deployed various programs. Such programs …
