Taxonomy Of Business Ethics Theories, Grace S. Thomson Feb 2009

Taxonomy Of Business Ethics Theories, Grace S. Thomson

Dr. Grace S. Thomson

An increasing interest on ethics in business has resulted in a fruitful production of scholarly research that provides business leaders and decision-makers with references to bridge theory and practice (Cherry, Lee, and Chien, 2003). For an effective application of business ethics theories, it is necessary to comprehend their domains, their external and internal logic, and the specific applications to the ethical issues under analysis (Wempe, 2008).

This document presents a taxonomy of 11 ethical theories applied to business ethics that incorporate grounded theory and conceptual frameworks. As a basis for the construction of this taxonomy, the selection of the theories …

Corporate Social Responsibility Orientation And Organisational Performance Within The Retailing Sector, Andrew J. Zur, Jody Evans, Kerrie Bridson Jan 2009

Corporate Social Responsibility Orientation And Organisational Performance Within The Retailing Sector, Andrew J. Zur, Jody Evans, Kerrie Bridson

AZ

It is becoming increasingly apparent that organisations in the oversaturated retailing sector are looking for new ways to gain a positional advantage over competitors. Using the resource-based view, this paper proposes that investment in and implementation of socially responsible and sustainable practices and strategies is, in fact, a capability of the firm. Further, we suggest that an organisation is able to better achieve a positional advantage and subsequent strong organisational performance through adoption of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) orientation. We also posit that organisational culture, corporate strategy and target stakeholders influence the development of a strong CSR orientation.

Spirituality And Subjective Well-Being: Empirical Evidences For A New Domain In The Personal Well-Being Index, Eduardo Wills-Herrera

Eduardo Wills-Herrera

Subjective well-being explores the evaluations, both positive and negative, of how people experience their lives. Research in the field inquires how people perceive their well-being in different settings, including different cultures, regions and cities. A large number of different measures have been designed to capture subjective well-being. One of the most used SWB measure is the Personal Well-being Index (PWI), an evaluation of life developed by Cummins et al [(2003). Social Indicators Research, 64, 159–190] which proposes that satisfaction with life consists of seven different life-domains. Theoretical considerations of the contribution of spirituality and religiosity to life satisfaction, from a …

Integrating Ethics Across Disciplines: The Mcdonald’S Case And Poverty Alleviation, Laura Hartman, Regina Wolfe, Patricia Werhane

Laura Hartman

The question of whether ethical issues should be integrated throughout an undergraduate or graduate business curriculum is no longer relevant. To the contrary, it is instead the urgency of how those challenges are most effectively addressed and where to find models of positive corporate performance that occupies our current attention. While no single organization exemplifies the entirety of “ethical” behavior, it is vital to consider models of conduct that have generated value through ethical means, both domestically and on a global scale. The purpose of this discussion is to introduce McDonald’s practice of promotion from within an example of a …

Review Essay: Disagreeing About The Climate, Donald Nordberg Jan 2009

Review Essay: Disagreeing About The Climate, Donald Nordberg

Donald Nordberg

This paper is an early draft of a review essay that subsequently appeared in the journal Business and Society in 2010. The science concerning climate change is clear, both sides of the argument agree. What they don't agree about is what that clarity means. Each side considers the matter settled, and their points of view unsettle each attempt to make public policy. Mike Hulme, director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia, thinks the reasons for the persistent differences lies in the complex ways we see and use climate change as a totem …

Delivery of Legal Services to Immigrant Small Business Owners: The Problems and a Model to Solve Them. By Pablo Ormachea & William Langer

Immigrant entrepreneurs not only provide essential support for individual families, but also serve as key engines of economic growth for United States cities. While immigrant small-business owners continuously stimulate growth in various economic sectors, creating new jobs and helping to develop inner-city neighborhoods, they overcome considerable obstacles and barriers to reach these achievements. This article argues that a deeper understanding of such systemic barriers can help to reduce such barriers so that an increasingly larger number of …
