Business Combinations Under Common Control (Part 2), Pearl Hock-Neo Tan, Chu Yeong Lim, Tracey Chunqi Zhang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

In Part 1 of the article, published in the March issue of this IS Chartered Accountant Journal, we explained the conditions for a BCUCC and the two methods of accounting for BCUCC. We also explained how accounting standards need to address the gap in accounting for the BCUCC from the receiving entity’s perspective. In this Part 2 of the article, we propose a contextual approach in determining the accounting method on BCUCC for the receiving entity (that is, the entity which receives control of the transferred entity from another group entity). We propose that a BCUCC that has commercial substance …

The International Financial Reporting Standards And Firm Performance: A Systematic Review, Wafaa Salah Jan 2020

The International Financial Reporting Standards And Firm Performance: A Systematic Review, Wafaa Salah

Business Administration

This study reviews the accounting literature which investigates the effects of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) on firms’ financial performance to answer a debating question of how effective are the accounting standards in affecting financial performance and to provide guidance for future studies. The focus of the review is three primary streams, first, reasons and evidence of differences between countries in accounting practices; second, theories justifying the transition from local Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to IFRS; Third, the effect of accounting standards on firms’ financial performance regarding three broad groups: (1) Common law countries (2) Civil law countries, and …

Deciding When And How To Impair Goodwill: The Case Of Enervate Inc., Jason Porter, Jane M. Weiss, Philip Church

The North American Accounting Studies

Constituents to the accounting profession recommend that educators teach critical thinking skills, thus improving accounting graduates’ abilities to achieve long-term career success. Students in upper division accounting courses possess the basic understanding of accounting principles and are provided new content requiring analysis and evaluation, which makes these courses a good setting for motivating students to develop critical thinking skills. This paper discusses an exercise for upper division accounting courses that provide students the opportunity to examine the challenging concept of goodwill impairment for a parent company with three separate subsidiaries. The suggested exercise requires students to research, properly cite, and …

Accounting Enforcement In A National Context: An International Study, Gary Kleinman, Beixin Lin, Rebecca Bloch

Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the national characteristics of culture, religion and political factionalization are associated with the strength of accounting enforcement. The study uses data on percentages of religious adherents in a sample nation, the Hofstede cultural dimensions and political factionalization. National legal code (e.g., Common Law or Civic Code) and market liquidity are controlled for. Factor analysis is used to generate factor scores from the data. The dependent variable, accounting enforcement, is drawn from Brown et al. (J Bus Finance Account 41(1/2):1–52, 2014). The findings demonstrate that this set of national characteristics is strongly …

A Study Of Long-Lived Asset Impairment Under U.S. Gaap And Ifrs Within The U.S. Institutional Environment, Philip K. Hong, Daniel Gyung Paik, Joyce Van Der Laan Smith

Accounting Faculty Publications

This paper explores whether differences in accounting standards influence reporting behavior within the U.S. institutional environment where both IFRS and U.S. GAAP are used for reporting purposes. We focus on the accounting for impairment of long-lived assets, an area where significant differences exist between U.S. GAAP and IFRS. We identify all U.S.-listed firms who have recognized long-lived asset impairment losses during the 2004–2012 period. From these firms, we identify firms following IFRS, then develop a matched sample of U.S. GAAP firms, using a propensity score matching procedure. We examine the relation between impairment loss and unexpectedly high or low earnings …

Forensic Detection For Earnings Management In Selected Code Law Nations Of Europe, Jef Lee Garner Jan 2018

Forensic Detection For Earnings Management In Selected Code Law Nations Of Europe, Jef Lee Garner

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This study investigated earnings management in European firms. The private investors became victims of manipulated earnings where few laws offered regulatory oversight. The study forensically examined the attributes of earnings management identified using a discretionary accrual model published in Jones' work and Schippers' work. The firms' managers should fulfil agency theory when they made reporting decisions, and they should act in the investors' best interests to fulfil stewardship theory. The managers failed as they seemed to favor insiders when they reported manipulated earnings to outsiders like small investors even though the managers published financial reports conforming to the International Financial …

The Effect Of Mandatory Adoption Of Ifrs On Transparency For Investors, Crystal Anderson Jan 2018

The Effect Of Mandatory Adoption Of Ifrs On Transparency For Investors, Crystal Anderson

CMC Senior Theses

This paper examines the effect of the mandatory adoption of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) on transparency for investors by measuring the increase in earnings management during the post-adoption period of IFRS. One sign of earnings management is current year earnings being only slightly higher than the previous year’s earnings. An increase in earnings management means a decrease in accounting quality and a decrease of transparency for investors. By comparing firms that mandatorily adopted IFRS to similar benchmark firms in terms of strength of legal enforcement, book-to-market ratios, market values and net incomes, I am able to run empirical …

Ifrs In Higher Education: An Exploratory Study, Joshua A. Kalifeh May 2017

Ifrs In Higher Education: An Exploratory Study, Joshua A. Kalifeh

Honors Theses

Globalization of capital markets and technological advances enhancing global communications has led to the need for a set of international accounting standards. Comparability among financial statements prepared by numerous accounting standards depending upon the regulations of the country in which these statements are prepared is seriously impaired. Accordingly, serious convergence efforts have been made for the last few decades. Accordingly, higher education in the United States must reflect these changes in accounting curriculum available to students entering this environment. This exploratory study presents evidence that progress is being made in institutions. The progress, however, is not spread equally among the …

Gaap And Ifrs: The Convergence Phenomenon, Paul R. Walter Apr 2017

Gaap And Ifrs: The Convergence Phenomenon, Paul R. Walter

Selected Honors Theses

The past few decades have birthed dialogue regarding the convergence of U.S. and international accounting standards. With over a hundred countries using International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), it becomes natural to notice the purple elephant in the room in that a set of different principles serve as guide to accounting in the U.S. and for U.S. companies known as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Some see it as simply a matter of time before a convergence of sorts takes place more completely between the two accounting rule frameworks. A look at GAAP and IFRS reveals some fundamental differences produced by …

A Case Of Fixed Asset Accounting: Initial And Subsequent Measurement, Jodi L. Gissel Dec 2016

A Case Of Fixed Asset Accounting: Initial And Subsequent Measurement, Jodi L. Gissel

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

This instructional case integrates multiple accounting concepts relating to fixed asset acquisition and subsequent measurement. You must apply accounting knowledge, professional judgment, and critical thinking skills to evaluate fixed assets and make recommendations. You must also analyze differences between fixed asset accounting under US generally accepted accounting principles and IFRS. As a student, you generally understand basic application of asset cost computation that simply recognizes the amount of cash paid for acquiring the asset. However, determining asset cost becomes challenging when you encounter more complex situations. You must consider initial measurement issues relating to a land purchase (demolition of existing …

Essays On The U.S. Gaap-Ifrs Convergence Project, The Nature Of Accounting Standards, And Financial Reporting Quality, Assma M. Sawani

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I examine the changes to the nature of the accounting paradigms of U.S. GAAP and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) over the course of the U.S. GAAP and IFRS convergence project. I further examine whether the changes to the nature of IFRS following convergence impacts the financial reporting quality. The motivation for this study is to provide an initial review of the progress of the convergence process between U.S. GAAP and IFRS that aims to converge both sets of standards towards more principles-based paradigms. The ultimate goal of the convergence process was the development of globally recognized …

Mandatory Financial Reporting And Voluntary Disclosure: The Effect Of Mandatory Ifrs Adoption On Management Forecasts, Xi Li, Holly I. Yang May 2016

Mandatory Financial Reporting And Voluntary Disclosure: The Effect Of Mandatory Ifrs Adoption On Management Forecasts, Xi Li, Holly I. Yang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study examines the effect of the mandatory adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) on voluntary disclosure. Using a difference-in-difference analysis, we document a significant increase in the likelihood and frequency of management earnings forecasts following mandatory IFRS adoption, consistent with the notion that IFRS adoption alters firms' disclosure incentives in response to increased capital-market demand. We find the increase to be larger among firms domiciled in code-law countries, suggesting a catching-up effect among firms facing low disclosure incentives pre-adoption. We then propose and test three channels through which IFRS adoption could alter firms' disclosure incentives: improved earnings quality, …

The Impact Of International Financial Reporting Standards On Key Financial Indicators Of Canadian Companies, Clint W. Smith Jan 2016

The Impact Of International Financial Reporting Standards On Key Financial Indicators Of Canadian Companies, Clint W. Smith

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Companies throughout the world use different methods for reporting their financial information to capital market investors and regulators. These different methods have caused financial reporting of statements to become less transparent, has increased adjustment errors and forecasting errors, and has reduced investor confidence. As a result, the International Accounting Standards Board created International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) to establish a global standard. Currently, 140 jurisdictions worldwide have implemented IFRS. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of IFRS on 248 Canadian companies and to analyze whether the 2011 implementation of IFRS affected corporate stock prices, key financial …

Fair Value Hierarchy Measures: Post-Implementation Evidence On Ifrs 7, Pearl Tan Jul 2015

Fair Value Hierarchy Measures: Post-Implementation Evidence On Ifrs 7, Pearl Tan

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Using a balance sheet valuation model, this study examines if information on the fair value hierarchy of on-balance sheet financial assets and financial liabilities are incorporated in the market’s valuation of companies’ equities in Singapore. The results of the study show significant associations between as-reported Level 1 and Level 2 fair value measures of financial assets and market values. However, the results are not significant for Level 3 fair value measures of financial assets and each of the three levels of fair value measures of financial liabilities. The results also show that returns are more positively associated with as-reported gains …

Accounting For The Future: Reducing The Differences Between International And Domestic Accounting Standards And Becoming A Better Global Citizen While Maintaining Autonomy, Andrew R. Hassler

Senior Honors Theses

In recent times, the FASB and the IASB have heavily discussed bringing the United States on board to utilize the same IFRS accounting standards that much of the rest of the world uses. At this present time, IFRS adoption in the United States is no longer actively being considered, and alternative means of convergence have become the preferred method for supporting globalization. This paper posits that in order to serve a worldwide business community, the principles-based approach is more conducive to the flexible modern environment. The practices currently utilized to jointly-research and co-develop accounting standards by both the FASB and …

Why Does The U.S. Continue To Use Gaap And Will It Ever Converge To Ifrs?, Hester Lam Jan 2015

Why Does The U.S. Continue To Use Gaap And Will It Ever Converge To Ifrs?, Hester Lam

CMC Senior Theses

The United States has a long history of doing things differently than other countries. Its accounting standards are no different; to date, it continues to use its own Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and have yet to converge to the International Financial Reporting Standards ("IFRS") as set by the International Accounting Standards Board. In 2008, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") Chairman Christopher Cox published a press release in which the SEC published for public comment a roadmap towards convergence by 2014. However, in subsequent years, Memorandum of Understandings published by the IASB and the United States' Financial Accounting Standards …

Differences Between Ind As And Ifrs: Can Full Convergence Ever Occur Between The Two?, Shoubhik Pal Jan 2015

Differences Between Ind As And Ifrs: Can Full Convergence Ever Occur Between The Two?, Shoubhik Pal

CMC Senior Theses

Since the turn of the millennium, there have been various attempts by Indian regulators as well as the government to converge the current accounting system in India (tentatively called Indian GAAP) to a system similar to IFRS, considered today to be the prevalent worldwide set of accounting standards. Indian GAAP has had its fair share of criticism, the most telling being that it avoids the principle of substance over form in various topics in its literature. The first announcement of a plan to converge came in July 2007. While suffering various setbacks through delays in recent years, the current roadmap …

The Implication Of Us Gaap And Ifrs Convergence On American Business, Austin Willmore Dec 2014

The Implication Of Us Gaap And Ifrs Convergence On American Business, Austin Willmore

Honors Theses

The purpose of this work is to discuss the ongoing process of convergence between IFRS and GAAP. It addresses some of the limitations of previous research related to this topic: namely, gives a more recent perspective than is currently available, and also discusses various aspects of the project in a single paper. This paper addresses the timeline of the project, the costs that it presents, the status of the convergence effort, and discusses possible outcomes of these efforts. This research compares, contrasts, and analyzes IFRS and GAAP in several key areas that were (or are still) keeping the standards apart.

International Financial Reporting Standards Implementation In Canada: The Impact Of Ifrs Conversion On Canadian Public Banking Enterprises, Arina V. Gibson Dec 2014

International Financial Reporting Standards Implementation In Canada: The Impact Of Ifrs Conversion On Canadian Public Banking Enterprises, Arina V. Gibson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of the research is developing an understanding of the effect that International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) had, if any, on Canadian Publicly Accountable Enterprises (PAEs), specifically their external financial reporting compared to Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (Canadian GAAP). The focus of this research is the analysis of reported financial ratios of Canadian Banking companies for the year ended December 31, 2010, which will be tested for the statistically-significant differences between Canadian GAAP and IFRS. The research is designed to examine what impact on liquidity, leverage, profitability, and cash flows the change from Canadian GAAP to IFRS has, …

In this exploratory study we investigate the impact of the implementation of IFRS on corporate social disclosures (CSD) within the context of stakeholder theory. We measure the level of CSD in annual reports using a disclosure instrument based on the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development report “Guidance on Corporate Responsibility Indicators in Annual Reports”. We find that IFRS adoption had a differential effect on CSD based on a firm's institutional setting i.e., the stakeholder–management relationship prevalent in their institutional environment. Firms in the stakeholder countries did not have a significant change in the level of CSD following the …

Corporate Revenue Miscalculations & The Impact On Stakeholders, Karen Cascini, Alan L. Delfavero, Ryan Bezner

WCBT Faculty Publications

Corporate earnings restatements are regarded as one of the most significant issues in accounting today. While there are various factors that can influence profitability, revenue is the key contributor to a business’ net income. During the 2000s, a multitude of domestic and multinational corporations faced significant issues with their revenue recognition practices. Although the investing public might regard any revenue restatement as laden with possible fraud, this is not always the case. Multinational firms face dual accounting systems, such as U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Currently, similarities and differences between the accounting systems …

An Ever Closer Union: An Investigation Of Accounting Measurement And Timing In The European Union, Elizabeth Marie Devos Jan 2014

An Ever Closer Union: An Investigation Of Accounting Measurement And Timing In The European Union, Elizabeth Marie Devos

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This paper explores whether the implementation of a unified set of accounting standards, International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is able to overcome prior reporting behaviors by using multiple measures of accounting conservatism, both conditional and unconditional, to proxy for changes in accounting outcomes. Conservatism makes a good proxy for changes in accounting outcomes because it is used as a mechanism to protect key stakeholders and the level of conservatism differs in an international context (Gray, 1988). Countries from different legal systems have different institutional structures and different reporting incentives. Therefore, the sample is bifurcated and regressions are also run based …

Why The Sec Is Delaying Adoption Of International Financial Reporting Standards, Clemense Ehoff Jr., Dov Fischer Feb 2013

Why The Sec Is Delaying Adoption Of International Financial Reporting Standards, Clemense Ehoff Jr., Dov Fischer

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

In 2002, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) formally began a process to converge Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). The SEC has repeatedly delayed its decision on whether to adopt International Financial Reporting Standards as the financial reporting system for U.S. public companies, continue with the convergence project, or reject IFRS altogether. This paper will examine several key reports issued by the SEC and the Financial Accounting Foundation to gain further insight into 1) why the SEC has repeatedly delayed its decision, and 2) what the SEC …

US GAAP (SFAS 2) requires immediate expensing of research and development (R&D) expenditure. Critics of this rule contend that the current treatment incentivizes managers to cut essential investments in R&D to manage short-term profits, and such actions could lead to longer-term adverse consequences for firms and investors. While other observers argue that there is little rigorous research that suggests that the current accounting treatment has harmful consequences. In this study, we exploit a setting in Germany when the accounting rule for R&D reporting changed from immediate expensing (as in the U.S.) to partial capitalization when Germany adopted International Financial Reporting …
