A Note On The Preferred Hedge Instrument, Arthur Hau Jun 2005

A Note On The Preferred Hedge Instrument, Arthur Hau

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

Contrary to Battermann et al.'s (2000) claims, this paper shows that risk-averse exporters may produce less with fair commodity futures than with fair put options; moreover, they may prefer the latter instrument for hedging against its exchange rate risk.

Corporate Governance And Expropriation Of Minority Shareholders' Rights: Evidence From Latin America, Marisela Santiago-Castro May 2005

Corporate Governance And Expropriation Of Minority Shareholders' Rights: Evidence From Latin America, Marisela Santiago-Castro

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The dissertation empirically examines whether the internal corporate governance mechanisms of the firms represented in Latin American equity markets lead to the expropriation of minority shareholders' rights; and whether such expropriation leads to economic underperformance. Specifically, the dissertation answers the following: Is there a relationship between the board of director's characteristics and the expropriation of minority shareholders rights in Latin American firms? Is there a relationship between the ownership structure of Latin American firms and the expropriation of minority shareholders rights? Moreover, does the expropriation of minority shareholders rights lead to economic underperformance among Latin American firms?

Several hypotheses were …

On ‘‘Investment Decisions In The Theory Of Finance: Some Antinomies And Inconsistencies’’, Bert De Reyck Mar 2005

On ‘‘Investment Decisions In The Theory Of Finance: Some Antinomies And Inconsistencies’’, Bert De Reyck

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In the paper “Investment Decisions in the Theory of Finance: Some antinomies and inconsistencies”, Magni [Eur. J. Operat. Res. 137 (2002) 206] shows that using the net present value rule for making investment decisions can lead to inconsistencies and antinomies. The author claims that the so-called equivalent-risk tenet of finance, whereby an investor needs to compare an investment opportunity with an asset of equivalent risk, is impossible to implement. In this paper, we show that the main thesis of this paper is incorrect, and that finance theory, when applied correctly, can be used to value investment projects by comparing assets …

How Risky Are Your Capital Expenditures?, Thomas Zeller, Brian Stanko Feb 2005

How Risky Are Your Capital Expenditures?, Thomas Zeller, Brian Stanko

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The article discusses estimating the risks involved with capital expenditures. According to the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) risk is built into the measurement system by evaluating each future cash flow estimate. This model builds risk into an analysis by weighting the possible range of cash flow estimates that may be applied in an investment decision.

Retirement Plans, Attitudes, And Expectations Of Kansas Board Of Regents Faculty, Carl Parker, Bill Rickman, Rory Terry, Tom Johansen

Fort Hays Studies Series

This data set enables the examination of investment choices of a mature group of faculty, where saving for retirement is a major investment objective. Consideration of future retirement-related policy proposals by universities should be evaluated with an understanding of the relative importance of economic and non-economic influences upon the retirement decision by university faculty.

Financing Strategies Of The R & D Firm, Lawrence Fogelberg, John M, Griffith Jan 2005

Financing Strategies Of The R & D Firm, Lawrence Fogelberg, John M, Griffith

Finance Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the financing strategies of the R&D firm. Our hypotheses are based on Cho's (1992) game theory model where the firm develops a product but needs additional financing to bring it to market. The model generates a particularly rich set of hypotheses: 1) to fund the completion of its project and bring its product to market, the firm initiates negotiations with an established firm; 2) the majority of the acquisitions will be partial cash acquisitions through private secondary offerings. Confirming the model's hypotheses, we find that the majority of the acquisitions are partial cash acquisitions by significantly larger …

To Judge Leviathan: Sovereign Credit Ratings, National Law, And The World Economy, Christopher Bruner, Rawi Abdelal Jan 2005

To Judge Leviathan: Sovereign Credit Ratings, National Law, And The World Economy, Christopher Bruner, Rawi Abdelal

Scholarly Works

Recent decades have witnessed the remarkable rise of a kind of market authority almost as centralized as the state itself – two credit rating agencies, Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s. These agencies derive their influence from two sources. The first is the information content of their ratings. The second is both more profound and vastly more problematic: Ratings are incorporated into financial regulations in the United States and around the world. In this article we clarify the role of credit rating agencies in global capital markets, describe the host of problems that arise when their ratings are given the force …
