More Than Fun And Games: Reconsidering The Virtues Of Strategic Management Simulations, Ken E. Zantow, Dave S. Knowlton, David C. Sharp
Faculty Publications
We look at the relationship between business simulations and the educational theory of generative learning using the framework developed by Wittrock (1974, 1990, 1992). Our findings reveal opportunities for generative learning that occur at all phases of the simulation process. Awareness of these opportunities prepares faculty to get the most from the strategic decision-making simulations. and may assist them in defining the contribution associated with their use. We suggest areas for additional research.

One might not expect a non- Christian to take an even-handed approach to evaluating something as potentially controversial as integrating faith at work. But Lewis Solomon, an ordained rabbi, interfaith minister, and professor of business law at George Washington University Law School does just this.

Business Valuation Of Pass Through Entities, Mark Brough
Business Valuation Of Pass Through Entities, Mark Brough
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The majority in the business valuation profession believe that the proper way to value a "pass through" entity is to tax affect the earnings. This may be the traditional understanding, but recent court cases such as Estate of Walter L. Gross suggest that tax affecting may not be valid. The focus of this paper is to analyze the arguments presented by valuation experts in the Tax Court for and against tax affecting the earnings of a pass through entities.

Managing Word Of Mouth For Organizational Success, Michael E. Cafferky
Managing Word Of Mouth For Organizational Success, Michael E. Cafferky
Faculty Works
The article focuses on managing word of mouth of organizational success. Word of mouth is based heavily on informal conversations and storytelling. It is the perfect example of a situation in which the command-and-control approach cannot be used. The article states that managing positive word of mouth is not about control but about collaboration and managing influence. It begins by building trust at every level possible in the organization, ensuring congruence between what is said and what is done, being consistent and reliable, developing ways to involve social network leaders in positive personal experiences with organizations.
The Unique Benefits Of Treating Personal Goodwill As Property In Corporate Acquisitions, Darian M. Ibrahim
The Unique Benefits Of Treating Personal Goodwill As Property In Corporate Acquisitions, Darian M. Ibrahim
Faculty Publications
Corporate acquisition talks may not get far if buyer and seller disagree over transaction structure, which can have significant after-tax effects. But the parties may have overlooked an item that, due to its potential tax treatment, could be the key to facilitating the acquisition. That item is the selling shareholder's "personal goodwill."
Personal goodwill exists when the shareholder's reputation, expertise, or contacts gives the corporation its intrinsic value. It is most likely to be found in closely held businesses, especially those that are technical, specialized, orprofessional in nature or have few customers and suppliers. If personal goodwill is treated as …

A Customer's Expectation And Perception Of Hotel Service Quality In Cyprus, Christou Loizos, Hadjiphanis Lycourgos
Hospitality Review
In recent years, hotels in Cyprus have encountered difficult economic times due to increasing customer demands and strong internal industry development competition. The hospitality industry’s main concern globally is to serve its customer S needs and desires, most of which are addressed through personal services. Hence, the hotel businesses that are able to provide quality services to its ever-demanding customers in a warm and efficient manner are those businesses which will be more likely to obtain a long term competitive advantage over their rivals. Ironically, the quality of services frequently cannot fully appreciated until something goes wrong, and then, the …

Understanding Tensions And Conflict: A Phases Of Learning Approach To Family Business, Ken Moores, Mary Barrett
Understanding Tensions And Conflict: A Phases Of Learning Approach To Family Business, Ken Moores, Mary Barrett
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Tensions inevitably arise from time to time in most business settings. But in family businesses these tensions potentially can be especially acute and even result in the cessation of the enterprise. These tensions manifest at various times and for many reasons but they generally arise when the business is undergoing a transition. Understanding these transitions and how to prepare for them enable family business leaders to lessen the threats to survival. In this paper we present results from our research into the transitions that Australian family firms typically experience and how they influence four key stages of learning for family …
The Development Of An Industry Specific Performance Measurement Model For Service Organisations Within The Small Business Sector, Vicki Baard, Edmund W. Watts
The Development Of An Industry Specific Performance Measurement Model For Service Organisations Within The Small Business Sector, Vicki Baard, Edmund W. Watts
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
The role of small business, as part of the value adding chain in any economy, should never be understated. In Australia small business represents 96% of all private sector business, accounts for 47% of all private sector employment and the majority fail within three to five years of establishment. Despite this contribution the small business sector, and in particular the service sector component, appear to be underrepresented in the development of specific performance measurement models, which, within the academic and professional literature appear to focus on their larger firm counterparts. Given the unique position of small business service organisations the …
Business Profitability And Structural Change In Interwar Australia, Simon Ville, David Merrett
Business Profitability And Structural Change In Interwar Australia, Simon Ville, David Merrett
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
The Australian economy of the interwar period experienced noteworthy cyclical and secular trends. Severe cyclical fluctuations were associated with the international depression, often referred to as the ‘Great Slump’, which particularly afflicted Australia’s large traded sector, especially its cornerstone primary exporting industries. In the midst of this apparent dearth, however, came the ‘plenty’ of the initial stages of modernisation, which resulted from the broadening of the country’s economic base into new manufacturing industries. The general trends of economic activity are captured by national income data, while the expansion of particular industries has been contextualised by several authors, most notably Forster …

Fulfilling Our Obligation: Perspectives On Teaching Business Ethics, Sheb L. True, Linda Ferrell, O.C. Ferrell
KSU Press Legacy Project
This anthology offers a myriad of perspectives on teaching business ethics. The authors are business and philosophy faculty, business school deans, industry practitioners, and a representative of AACSB International. Best Practices And Web Practices: Comparing Corporate Supplier Diversity Programs With Web-Based Minority Supplier Content, Dale Young
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
The growing use of the Web for business-to-business transactions means corporate Web sites could be used to communicate with diverse suppliers. This study compares the Web-based supplier diversity content on Fortune 500 public sites with the content of off-line minority supplier programs. Web sites are underused for communicating with diverse suppliers, as the content appears on only 12.5% of the sites. They emphasize information publishing because the most common Web-based supplier diversity items are contact information, such as a title and name, and third-party certification. Web-based supplier diversity content, however, is very similar to off-line diversity program content.

Cbd Economic Enhancement Project : Final Report, Beth Walker, Beverley Webster, Anna Wildy
Research outputs pre 2011
The City of J oondalup engaged the Small & Medium Enterprise Research Centre at Edith Cowan University to review the activities of the business community in the Central Business District (CBD) in order to support the City's strategic development plan. This report provides data to inform the future strategic decisions for the City concerning how it will grow and develop its CBD. The project aimed to identify the key indicators of current economic activity within the CBD, which could then be used to assist in the development of a more targeted approach to continuous growth and development strategies for the …

Analyzing The Effect Of Top Management Support On Information System (Is) Performance Across Organizations And Industries Using Hierarchical, Thawatchai Jitpaiboon, Sema A. Kalaian
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Top management support has long been conceivable as an important factor for the success of IS projects. Due to the hierarchical nature of an organization, a cross-level interaction can occur among nested levels. Thus, using inappropriate statistical analysis can cause misleading results and lost of information. This study provides two contributions to the IS research. First, Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) was used to explain the cross-level interaction between organizational level and industry level. Second, unlike other studies focusing on an organizational level, this study considers top management support at the industry level and examines the mediating role of top management …
