International Migration In Macro-Perspective: Bringing Power Back In, Marcel Paret, Shannon Gleeson

This paper challenges the inward looking perspective of recent immigration research by situating migration to the United States within a global and historical context. This macro-stratification perspective breaks out of the confines of national contexts to explore how international migration is shaped by global power divides. We argue that in order to fully understand international migration, it is necessary to account for both the emergence of global power structures and the historical domination of Europe. En el año 2011 se produjo una de las mayores crisis humanitarias y migratorias del mundo en la región de Medio Oriente, conocida como la crisis de refugiados proveniente de Siria, país en el que se desató una guerra civil a nivel interno que dejó como resultado el traspaso masivo de 1’500.000 ciudadanos sirios hacia el territorio libanés. Este país no solo cuenta con cercanía geográfica a Siria, sino que también maneja una política migratoria de puertas abiertas, convirtiéndose de este modo en la principal opción de destino para migrar.
