Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Human beings have always coveted beautiful objects, but the desire to look good is reaching new heights worldwide. Although the pursuit of beauty appears universal, industry evidence suggests that it is particularly strong in Asia. This research examines the effect of culture on the pursuit of beauty. Three studies provide converging evidence that interdependent self-construal increases the likelihood of using appearance-enhancing products. Study 1 operationalizes culture through nationality and self-construal and shows that Easterners (more interdependent) are more likely to use appearance-enhancing products than Westerners (less interdependent). This use is driven by interdependents’ tendency to conform to societal norms, which …

The Effect Of Institutional Dimensions And Cultural Dimensions On The Level Of Entrepreneurial Activity Across Countries, Jung Hoon Kim

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Entrepreneurship research is becoming more critical to policymakers and scholars around the world. However, few scholars have explored the effect of national culture or institutions on the entrepreneurial activity using cross-national data. Furthermore, most previous scholars have been limited to formal institutions as a theoretical structure to explore the entrepreneurial activity across countries. It is crucial to include formal, informal institutions and culture to better understand about how much or why entrepreneurial activity differs across countries.

To fill this gap, this study investigates how national culture and institutions impact the level of entrepreneurial activity across 30 countries using cross-national dataset …

How To Build A Robust Provider Improvement Partnership Program To Enhance Patient Experience – A Case Study, Venkat Iyer, Pamela Prissel, Karee Munson, Jennifer Eide, Rebecca Brustad, Nickie Kranz, Lukas P. Madson, Beverly Frase

Patient Experience Journal

Patient experience is emerging as a key differentiating factor in patients’ choice of healthcare system. Many healthcare organizations are attempting to improve their patient experience by data-driven, patient-centered initiatives. This involves engaging all staff along all the contact points of a patient’s journey in healthcare. Perhaps, the physicians or care providers are most important link in this chain but also the most challenging to engage in improvement efforts. Most healthcare organizations have some training or workshops to educate providers on communication skills and other tools to enhance patient experience. However, there seems to a paucity of a standardized approach or …

Innovating At Cultural Crossroads: How Multicultural Social Networks Promote Ideas Flow And Creativity, Roy Y. J. Chua Mar 2018

Innovating At Cultural Crossroads: How Multicultural Social Networks Promote Ideas Flow And Creativity, Roy Y. J. Chua

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Diversity in social networks is often linked to enhanced creativity. Emerging research on exposure to diverse informational resources (e.g., ideas and knowledge) however has painted a more complex picture regarding its effect on individuals’ creative performance. This research examines the effects of culturally diverse networks on the flow of ideas and individuals’ creativity. Combining social network analysis with experimental methods, two studies using different samples found that a culturally diverse network increases the likelihood of receiving culture-related novel ideas (but not other types of novel ideas) from network contacts, whether or not these contacts share one’s own culture of origin. …

What Goes Up Must ... Keep Going Up? Cultural Differences In Cognitive Styles Influence Evaluations Of Dynamic Performance, D. Lance Ferris, Jochen Reb, Huiwen Lian, Samantha Sim, Dionysius Ang Mar 2018

What Goes Up Must ... Keep Going Up? Cultural Differences In Cognitive Styles Influence Evaluations Of Dynamic Performance, D. Lance Ferris, Jochen Reb, Huiwen Lian, Samantha Sim, Dionysius Ang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Past research on dynamic workplace performance evaluation has taken as axiomatic that temporal performance trends produce naïve extrapolation effects on performance ratings. That is, we naïvely assume that an individual whose performance has trended upward over time will continue to improve, and rate that individual more positively than an individual whose performance has trended downward over time—even if, on average, the 2 individuals have performed at an equivalent level. However, we argue that such naïve extrapolation effects are more pronounced in Western countries than Eastern countries, owing to Eastern countries having a more holistic cognitive style. To test our hypotheses, …

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

This study examines the moderator effect of individual preferences for HRM practices on the relationship between work values and contextual and task performance (CTP).The relevant literature suggests that the notion of individual preferences in regard to their effect on CTP, moderator effect in particular, has received scant systematic attention. The data were obtained in a sample of 356 manufacturing sector employees in Sri Lanka. A three-step moderated hierarchical regression procedure was adopted to examine the moderating effect of individual preferences. The results of the study supported the hypotheses. Originally, work values and ethics had a direct effect on CTP. However, this …

Fine-Tuning Brand Endorsements: Exploring Race-Sport Fit With Athlete Endorsers, Youngmin Yoon, Jun Woo Kim, Mar Magnusen, Michael Sagas

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The present study examines the effect of an athlete endorser’s race-sport fit in the decision-making process of athlete endorsed product selection. The results of this study reveal that the race of athlete endorsers can influence endorsement strategies depending on the sport associated with the athlete endorser. Perceived race-sport fit was also a key factor in creating both positive sport consumer attitudes and increased purchase intentions toward an athlete endorsed product. The findings of this study should be beneficial to athletes and sport business professionals when considering endorsement strategies for sport-related products and brands. Subscribe to JASM

Faculty Support For Internationalization: The Case Study Of A United States Based Private University, Marta Almeyda, Babu George

Management Faculty Publications

Universities around the world are internationalizing themselves at a higher pace than even seen before. Faculty support is recognized as critical for the success of the internationalization mission. However, faculty motivation and commitment are often taken for granted; administrators direct most of their attention to tackling partnership issues and managing the external environment. This paper unravels certain critical issues associated with faculty support for internationalization in a small private university located in a US jurisdiction area. Data show that absence of an institutional structure for effective organizational communication would result in imperfect information about internationalization being circulated. Also, incentives like …

An Examination Of The Impact Of Gender And Culture On Facebook Privacy And Trust In Guam, Sathasivam Mathiyalakan, George Heilman, Kevin K.W. Ho, Wai Law

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Facebook, the world’s largest social network, allows users to develop a profile containing personal information. Users may choose privacy settings to control information access, but improper settings risk personal exposure. Several US studies examining gender differences in privacy management found that females have more privacy concerns. This study investigates gender differences in Facebook privacy settings among college students in Guam, a US territory whose ethnicity and culture differ from mainland US. Results show that neither gender trusts Facebook nor feels Facebook protects them. Significant differences in number and type of privacy settings indicate females are more security conscious. Gender differences …

The Dark Side Of Creative Tourism: A Philosophical Dialogue With Culture, Babu P. George Dec 2017

The Dark Side Of Creative Tourism: A Philosophical Dialogue With Culture, Babu P. George

Babu George

This manuscript interrogates the epistemological limitations of creative tourism, which is framed technically within “cultural tourism”. Discussing the old prejudices and paternalist discourses of colonialism, where “science” developed an uncanny sentiment of protection and submission for aboriginals, “cultural tourism” emulates old forms of domination, in a context of extremes and economic crisis. If creativity only works in contexts of scarcity, it would be interesting to understand capitalism as a cultural project that shows some problems to understand the “ non-European other” and environmental resources.
