The Emergent Strategic Human Capital Resource: A Multilevel Model Incorporating Social Capital And Absorptive Capacity, Alia Crocker

Doctoral Dissertations

Strategy scholars have exhibited interest in human capital, and in this dissertation, I follow recent work in this area to explore human capital from a multilevel perspective. In particular, I seek to answer the question of how the individual resources that are component to the unit-level human capital resource (HCR) and the collective capabilities that are characteristic of the HCR together impact performance through absorptive capacity. In examining the emergent HCR, with respect to human capital, social capital, and absorptive capacity, I seek to reconcile the tension between the preference for firm specific knowledge, skills, and abilities in prior human …

Business Administration

The only constant fact of life is change; whether leaders accept it or not, organizations practice it or not it is there. It will be always a transition that any institution passes through during its process of development. The paradigm shift of management and the rise of new concepts and directions in its processes and practices acted as a catalyst of change during our century. This transition from one state to the other or what we call “Change” due to internal as well as external factors and complexities of our Management environment acted by its turn as a catalyst boosting …

Leveraging Social Capital To Obtain Top Management Support In Complex, Cross-Functional It Projects, Gloria H. W. Liu, Eric T. G. Wang, Cecil Eng Huang Chua

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Research argues that a major reason for IT project failure is the lack of top management support. However, obtaining top management support is often considered outside the IT project team's control. In this paper, we investigate how IT project teams can obtain such support. We find that creating and mobilizing social capital through repeated interaction with top managers and their confidants helps a project obtain top management support. Also, a failure to use social capital to engage top management can cause a decrease in their support. We demonstrate these points through a natural experiment of the support of three division …

The Impact Of External Contexts On Alliance Governance In Biotech–Pharmaceutical Firm Alliances, Joanne L. Scillitoe, Shanthi Gopalakrishnan, Michael D. Santaro

Organization Management Journal

The interest in strategic alliances has increased over the years, especially in high tech global industries such as biotechnology, as firms seek to gain access to needed resources, expertise, and knowledge for developing and commercializing new products and technologies. The governance structure of these alliances, which is an important consideration in understanding alliance formation and performance, is influenced by both external and internal contexts of the alliance partners. However, evidence from prior research has been inconclusive regarding the impact of external contexts on alliance governance selection. To better understand this impact, we simultaneously examine three key partner external contexts - …

Relational Ties In Emerging Markets: What Is Their Contribution To Sme Growth?, Natalya Totskaya

Thus, this paper supports prior research conducted in the Asian context, and allows for extending the outcomes of bonding and bridging social …

The Impact Of Immigrant Entrepreneurs’ Social Capital Related Motivations, Claudia Gomez, B. Yasanthi Perera, Judith Y. Weisinger, David H. Tobey, Taylor Zinsmeister-Teeters

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

The immigrant entrepreneurship literature indicates that immigrant entrepreneurs reap numerous benefits from their co-ethnic communities’ social capital. These benefits, however, often come at a price because scholars note the potential for this community social capital to impose limitations on the entrepreneurs. While the literature largely focuses on the benefits of social capital, there is no research on what motivates the immigrant entrepreneurs to engage with their co-ethnic community in terms of contributing to, and utilizing, their co-ethnic communities’ social capital, and the consequences these may have on their enterprises. Addressing this gap in the literature is important in the development …
