The Half-Life & After-Life Of New Media, Nancy Austin Nov 2015

The Half-Life & After-Life Of New Media, Nancy Austin

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

It is fitting to think of the half-life of new media using the time-based metaphor of radioactive decay. As a metaphor, an object’s half-life can be a useful way to talk about the potent technological modernity of new media and, like Walter Benjamin’s well-known notion of the aura, call attention to an object’s performativity. However, Benjamin’s aura remains a constant reminder of irrevocable originality whereas remarking on half-life references a quality that changes over time. But what happens after the rhetorical impact of being new has run its course? What is the life expectancy of once-new media and what of …

Factors Affecting Dimensional Precision Of Consumer 3d Printing, David D. Hernandez Sep 2015

Factors Affecting Dimensional Precision Of Consumer 3d Printing, David D. Hernandez

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

This paper investigates the factors affecting dimensional precision of consumer-grade 3D printing, attempting to isolate and mitigate sources of error. The focus is on creating engineering prototypes of, tooling for, or finalized instances of mechanical devices. A specific fused deposition modeling printer – the Ultimaker 2 – is analyzed in terms of meeting precise physical dimensions, consistent shapes, and predictable surface finish. Extensive trial and error resulted in removal of several sources of bias, with square test articles exhibiting a lower-than-anticipated mean percentage error of -0.387% (SD = 0.559), a value comparable to other modern manufacturing techniques. A full …

Periodic Reporting In A Continuous World: The Correlating Evolution Of Technology And Financial Reporting, Daniel C. Rowe Aug 2015

Periodic Reporting In A Continuous World: The Correlating Evolution Of Technology And Financial Reporting, Daniel C. Rowe

Duke Law & Technology Review

The evolution of technology has drastically altered what it means to be a reporting company in the eyes of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Technological development has also played a large role in the shifting trend from periodic reporting to continuous reporting, as is particularly apparent in the evolution of the Form 8-K. It is true that the increasingly technological world of continuous reporting does not come without disadvantages. This issue brief, however, argues that despite the increased risks and challenges of continuous reporting, its net effect on disclosure, and the investing community generally, is positive. With that benefit in …

Operational data in terms of the flight scheduled, aircraft type, total time enroute, route stage length, passenger estimates were obtained through SAA’s flight operations website. An independent t–test was conducted to compare means of the emissions. The mean carbon dioxide …

Progressive Trust Formation Within The South African Fresh Produce Industry Through The Use Of Self-Service Technologies, Justy Range, Awie C. Leonard Phd

The African Journal of Information Systems

When using self-service solutions to deliver services the challenge is to retain the trust of the end user. This is specifically the case when dealing with end users in the fresh produce market environment. This sector has not seen the adoption of self-service technologies specifically in southern Africa. In this paper we propose a model to enhance our understanding of trust formation using self-service technologies. A qualitative research approach, based on a case study was followed to create the model. This case study offers insight into how the dynamics of the product, supporting services and the technology shapes trust forming …

Us Policy Of Technology Transfer To China, Amna Mehmood, Sadaf Farooq Jul 2015

Us Policy Of Technology Transfer To China, Amna Mehmood, Sadaf Farooq

Business Review

Hans Morgenthau defined international politics as the struggle for power among nations. Initially power was understood in terms of security and military supremacy only. But time has proved that military power is only effective when it is supported by a strong economy. Especially in post-Cold War era when the world is transforming from uni-polar to multi-polar world on the basis of competing economic centres, political economy has attained equal importance at par with the international security studies, if not more. One of the most important and sensitive area of international political economy is technology transfer, a life bloodfor modernization of …

Free To Play: Mobile Gaming And The Precipitous Rise Of Freemium, Craig Heier

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

With the abundance of games that enter the App Store marketplace, developers struggle to compete for the user’s attention and potential download. Unlike traditional console-games, mobile-based consumers tend to be more apprehensive towards purchasing an app or a game if they are unable to trial it beforehand. These factors have contributed to the freemium business model becoming the face of the mobile gaming industry.

Strategic Planning Objectives For Venture Capitalist Investments In Emerging Information Technologies: A Value-Focused Perspective, David L. Coss, Gupreet Dhillon, Ifeoma Udeh Mar 2015

Strategic Planning Objectives For Venture Capitalist Investments In Emerging Information Technologies: A Value-Focused Perspective, David L. Coss, Gupreet Dhillon, Ifeoma Udeh

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Abstract

Academic and practitioner literature suggests that Venture Capitalists often have problems with aligning information technology opportunities with investment objectives. To a large extent the alignment process is not formally documented and relies on intuitive instincts. Hence it is important to define Venture Capitalist objectives for investments in emerging information technologies. This paper uses the Value-Focused Thinking approach to identify, define and structure value driven objectives. Based on data collected from a number of Venture Capitalist interviews we identified 130 values, which resulted in 72 objectives. These objectives were organized into 22 clusters, which were bifurcated into fundamental and means …

Are Consumers Ready For Mobile Payment? An Examination Of Consumer Acceptance Of Mobile Payment Technology In Restaurant Industry, Cihan Cobanoglu, Wan Yang, Anna Shatskikh, Anurag Agarwal Feb 2015

Are Consumers Ready For Mobile Payment? An Examination Of Consumer Acceptance Of Mobile Payment Technology In Restaurant Industry, Cihan Cobanoglu, Wan Yang, Anna Shatskikh, Anurag Agarwal

Hospitality Review

As an emerging payment method, mobile payment technology is perceived to be a secure and effective substitute of traditional debit/credit card payment. Although several reports and scholars claimed that mobile payment technology would become a major future payment method, consumers rather caught on this trend slowly, and little is known about key determinants of consumers’ acceptance of mobile payment. To close that gap, the current study extended the classic Technology Acceptance Model by adding four additional predictors that are relevant to hospitality industry. The study results suggested that compatibility with lifestyle was the strongest predictor of consumers’ intention to adopt …

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

A choice-based conjoint study was conducted sampling 400 individuals to determine their preference for Soft Touch and raised tactile coatings, which are sometimes called Hi Rise or profile coatings. Soft Touch coatings have a velvety, warm feel to them, and Hi Rise coatings simulate embossing with a glossy appearance to them. Both are considered tactile coatings, engaging the sense of touch.

Demographic profile data, level of agreement about statements related to cosmetic packaging and packaging choice set selections were collected. The conjoint sets contained three attributes: design color, tactile coatings, and price.

Design choice was split. Approximately half of the …

Global Data Meets 3-D Printing: The Quest For A Balanced And Globally Collaborative Solution To Prevent Patent Infringement In The Foreseeable 3-D Printing Revolution, Tyler Macik Jan 2015

Global Data Meets 3-D Printing: The Quest For A Balanced And Globally Collaborative Solution To Prevent Patent Infringement In The Foreseeable 3-D Printing Revolution, Tyler Macik

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

This Note explores a potential global solution to the foreseeable patent infringement problems with 3-D printing and do-it-yourself users. More specifically, at a time when 3-D printing is quickly gaining popularity and recognition for its many beneficial applications through advancements in printing and scanning technology, the current state of patent law lacks the ability to detect and prevent patent infringement among do-it-yourself users of 3-D printing. I propose a potential global solution that would provide a balance between fostering growth in 3-D printing and upholding patentees' rights by exploring the possibility of creating a collaborative, intergovernmental 3-D CAD file database …
