Embedding Affordable Learning Solutions Into The Academic Senate, Aline Soules
SJSU Open Access Conference
Embedding the Affordable Learning Solutions (ALS) into the Academic Senate provides a forum and a platform for promoting ALS to and with faculty. At Cal State East Bay, ALS is now a Subcommittee of the Committee on Instruction and Curriculum (CIC) with representation from key constituencies, including a faculty representative from each College and the Library. Recommendations and suggestions can now be routed through CIC to the full Senate. The brief lightning round presentation will explain the process of creating the subcommittee and describe the benefits and challenges the Subcommittee has experienced to date.

The use of promotional messages that resemble editorial content is a long-standing practice in advertising, occurring in all major media, from advertorials in newspapers and magazines, to infomercials on television, to, most recently, digital “native” advertising on the internet. However, we have arguably never experienced as much growth in these advertising-editorial “hybrid” messages, as they are sometimes called (Balasubramanian 1994) as we have in recent years, as their use in existing media has grown while new forms have emerged with new media.
One of the older forms of hybrid message, the magazine advertorial presents an interesting hybrid message format for …

Investigating The Ichthus (Fish) Christianity Symbol On Perceived Source Credibility Of Service Providers Under Different Service Evaluation Contexts, Jeri L. Jones, Mahmood T. Shandiz
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
Combining religious practices with commercial pursuits for profit is neither a novel nor an insignificant trend (Belk, Wallendorf, and Sherry 1989; McDannell 1995). Today, marketplace use of Christian symbols in secular advertising is becoming more common, especially in certain geographic locations within the United States. Christian religion-based messages and symbols regularly appear in a wide range of advertisements. The Christian elements in these ads often include Bible verses, crosses, doves, and often, the Christian fish symbol (Ichthus). Similar Christian messages are often observed in outdoor advertising, retail store signage, product packaging, and even the daily newspaper. These examples illustrate that …

Selling the course experience to future students has been corporatised across the Higher Education sector. At many universities marketing and sales specialists, such as ECU’s Student Recruitment Team, rather than academic staff, field prospective student enquiries. Representing courses authentically is crucial to matching future students with an appropriate course experience and career, as well is managing future students’ expectations. A challenge for academics is communicating the course/career experience to university sales agents (recruiters). A challenge for recruiters is conveying an authentic course experience to future students when they have not taken a course themselves. This paper selects two ECU courses, …

A Market For Vice: An Exploration Of Strategic Irresponsibility, Oscar J. Stewart
A Market For Vice: An Exploration Of Strategic Irresponsibility, Oscar J. Stewart
Academic Conference on Good Business
Organizational scholarship has assumed that corporate irresponsibility (CI) is largely detrimental to corporate financial performance. Alternatively, CI may sometimes work in firms’ favor, though at the expense of stakeholders. Exploring this reality, I argue that many firms engage in strategic CI because there are short-term financial benefits or at least no clear financial payoffs for behaving otherwise. I critique the literature on CI and conceptualize the construct as more then corporate illegality and distinct from both corporate policy and low CSR. I then explain the proliferation of strategic CI as a strategy that firms employ toward competitive advantage. Importantly, CI …

Nacogdoches Livability Project: Image Of University Mall, Vanessa Arasin, Quinton Nunn, Cody Ressler
Undergraduate Research Conference
Introduction Our Client, Dr. Forbes, is doing a project to assess livability in Nacogdoches based on three mutually reinforcing areas: economics, environment, and society. He also wanted to know the types of businesses that would make students spend money at the University Mall. Our assignment from our professor was to find out Stephen F. Austin State University students’ image of the University Mall, so the research team decided to try to accomplish both objectives.
Objective The objective of the project was to gain a better understanding of the environment, economics, and Stephen F. Austin State University students’ image of University …

A Meta-Analysis Of Crew Resource Management/Incident Command Systems Implementation Studies In The Fire And Emergency Services, John C. Griffith, Donna L. Roberts, Ronald T. Wakeham
Aviation / Aeronautics / Aerospace International Research Conference
The presentation will summarize a meta-analysis of studies on Crew Resource Management/Incident Command System implementation in the fire and emergency services. The need for using participative leadership tools such as CRM evolved from an NTSB recommendation that followed United Airlines Flight 173 crash in 1978. NASA, civilian and military aviation communities implemented Crew Resource Management (CRM) training to improve decisionmaking during flight operations. Maintenance Resource Management (MRM) was a variant of CRM and first appeared in a Federal Aviation Administration circular in 2000. CRM was adopted by the medical community in the 1990s, specifically in the surgical and nursing areas, …
