Vertical Market Strategy: The Case Of An Executive Education Startup In A Medium-Sized Business School, Shawna L. Rogers, Thomas N. Duening

This paper provides an account of a vertical market go-to-market strategy that has been used by an executive education startup in the College of Business at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. The executive education startup is titled the “Office of Professional & Executive Development” and has been in operation for approximately 18 months. The office was launched explicitly using a vertical market strategy. That is, public training programs were designed for vertical markets only, enabling instructors to design programs with deep, industry-specific examples, cases, and lessons.

This study explores possible new drivers that may be integrated into the decision-making models for establishing the location of subsidiaries. More precisely, it seeks to answer the following research question: "Does the degree of responsiveness in the supply chain influence decisions regarding decisions the location of multinational subsidiaries?" Based on the theoretical approaches of the Uppsala School, the Eclectic and RBV, this research in the case of a large multinational agribusiness sector, aiming to explore the recent decision-drivers for the location of new subsidiaries and the influence of the current competitive market in this context.

Culture Determines Business Models: Analyzing Home Depot's Failure Case In China For International Retailers From A Communication Perspective, May Hongmei Gao

This article is a result of a longitudinal case study regarding Home Depot's operation in China. From 2006 to 2011, the author conducted 37 in-depth interviews with Home Depot executives, managers, lawyers, employees, suppliers, and consumers, as well as its Western and Chinese competitors. These interviews generated 500+ pages of transcripts and field notes. Home Depot entered China in 2006 by acquiring 12 stores from a Chinese company, Home Way. However, by September 2012 all Home Depot stores in China had been closed.

Teaching Note On The Treatment Of Noncontrolling Interests In Financial Analysis, Cost Of Capital And Valuation: A Case Study Of Verizon Communications, Bridget Lyons

A noncontrolling interest (NCI) arises when a firm fully consolidates subsidiaries that are not wholly owned by the parent. The existence of a noncontrolling interest complicates financial analysis and valuation. Failure to appropriately consider the NCI may lead to errors in equity valuation and share price since the NCI impacts equity value and implied share price of the parent firm. Return on equity calculations must be carefully constructed as there are several net income and equity values reported. Finally, the NCI can impact the weighted average cost of capital. This article contributes to the existing knowledge on the difficulties and critical aspects of the post-acquisition phase of an emerging market multinational. To establish the context, a literature review on multinational companies from emerging countries, and specifically on the internationalization initiatives of Chinese companies, is provided, along with a framework to analyze cultural and management-related differences related to mergers and acquisitions (M&As). This review and framework is followed by a case study of a Chinese motorbike M&A in Italy.
