The challenge to manage a business today is bigger than ever, because we cannot think only about our organization, but the intricate network of organizations that form our supply chain. Some organizations cope far better than others with both the prospect and the manifestation of unquantifiable risk -- they share a critical trait: resilience. This study researches emergency management organizations which are required to maintain a state of readiness for immediate reaction, and evaluates best practices in preparedness, detection, response and recovery. The Air Force Global Logistics Support Center (AFGLSC) is responsible for the United States Air Force’s supply chain. One of the AFGLSC’s responsibilities is to improve AF supply chain processes. This thesis investigates the subject of supply chain resilience and its potential impact for improving supply chain management. Through literature a supply chain resilience framework and measurement tool was identified for potential benefit to Air Force supply chain management. This dissertation paper offers a theoretical and empirical explanation for why interfirm collaborations form yet fail, and further suggests how firms might manage them for a more positive outcome. The main focus of this dissertation was to research and investigate the implementation issues in the early stages of CPFR. The crux of the argument is that firms enter into collaborative relationships because these are expected to yield superior results relative to alternate organizational forms in certain situations, offering potentially synergistic combinations of complementary resources and capabilities, yet such relationships are frequently prone to failure. Firm vertical relationships have received considerable attention in recent years in the relational and embeddedness approaches, yet pervasive confusion and uncertainty exist over the conception, conditions, and the benefits accrued from such linkages. The research is also known to be too diverse and scattered to provide any definitive explanations. Drawing on across the board literature reviews and extensive conversation with supply managers, I develop a conceptual model to study the concept of close ties between the manufacturers and their first-tier suppliers, identify their antecedent conditions and outcomes.
