Transaction Sizes And Spreads: An Informational Approach, David Feldman, Thomas Henker, Robert Kohn, Yuewen Xiao

Thomas Henker

We introduce an informational approach (IA) for exploring association between variables, an alternative to the prevalent parametric, thus restrictive, regression analysis. The IA uses data to (non-parametrically) construct the joint distribution of variables. Then, it uses theory to develop restrictions on the joint distributions. These restrictions will typically be orderings of functions of conditional distributions induced by the joint distribution. Finally, it attempts refuting the restrictions. We implement IA examining the relation between trading sizes and spreads, a main concern. Following insights and results of Milgrom (1981), Feldman (2004), and Feldman and Winer (2004), we use NYSE data and kernel …

Financial Management For Nonprofit Organizations: Father Joe's Village, Anna Plaster, Karen Pretzer, Simi Rush, Jim Stone

Finance

What started as a modest shelter for homeless families in downtown San Diego, has grown into Father Joe’s Villages (FJV), a multi-program, multi-dimensional approach to break the cycle of homelessness.

Since 1982, Fr. Joe’s Villages’ vision and mission reflect the aim the organization is determined to achieve within the communities it serves: to ensure that all neighbors in need will have access to food, housing, career development, healthcare, and education that will promote independence, self-sufficiency and fulfillment of one’s potential. To address these needs, FJV provides short and long term transitional housing for homeless men, women and families, and offers …

An Examination Of Accounting Education In Mexico And The United States, Jaime Eastman May 2009

An Examination Of Accounting Education In Mexico And The United States, Jaime Eastman

Senior Honors Projects

In order to gain a better understanding of accounting education in Mexico and the United States, this study examines how differences in the countries’ business culture, economic history and financial market structure affect accounting education at the university level. A literature review was first conducted of each country’s economic history, business culture, and capital markets. This review then served as the basis for the construction of an interview questionnaire which concerned how differences in the countries’ business environments affect accounting education. The questionnaire focused on several aspects of accounting education, including the accounting curriculum, the professional exam (required to practice …

Motivations For Us Foreign Direct Investment, Christina Buoninfante May 2009

Motivations For Us Foreign Direct Investment, Christina Buoninfante

Honors College Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to determine US firms’ motivations for foreign direct investment and to explore to what extent US firms continue to invest into China and India. I first correlate the agricultural, industrial, and service sectors in the United States with those of China and India. I find that there is a positive relationship between the correlation of US sectors and the host country’s sectors and foreign direct investment into each sector. This supports the theory of Vernon’s product life cycle hypothesis, which explains that firms expand into lesser developed countries when their product becomes more sensitive …

A Two-Sided Auction For Legacy Loans, Peter Cramton

Peter Cramton

On Monday, 23 March 2009, Treasury Secretary Geithner presented the Public-Private Investment Program as a key instrument to resolve the financial crisis (www.financialstability.gov). The Treasury’s description still leaves many issues unanswered. We flesh out the auction design for legacy loans. A two-sided auction is required. Both banks and private investors must compete in a transparent and competitive process.

The Effect Of Earnings Quality And Country-Level Institutions On The Value Relevance Of Earnings, Steven F. Cahan, David Emanuel, Jerry Sun Jan 2009

The Effect Of Earnings Quality And Country-Level Institutions On The Value Relevance Of Earnings, Steven F. Cahan, David Emanuel, Jerry Sun

Odette School of Business Publications

This study investigates the relationship between the value relevance of earnings and earnings quality across countries. We find that there is a stronger relationship between earnings quality and the value relevance of earnings in countries with high investor protection than in countries with weak investor protection. We also find that the association between the value relevance of earnings and earnings quality is higher when a country's information environment is less opaque. Overall, our study documents evidence on international differences in the ability of stock prices to capture useful accounting information, consistent with the notion that the returns-earnings association reflects not …

The Rise Of Private Equity Media Ownership In The United States: A Public Interest Perspective, Matthew Crain

Particular attention is paid to the public interest concerns raised by private equity media ownership relating to the frenzied nature of the buyout market, profit maximization strategies, and the heavy debt burdens imposed on acquired firms. Ethical And Faith-Based Investments: An Assessment Of Performance, Hisar Joel Munte

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this thesis will explore the risk and return characteristics of socially responsible investing by comparing three indices, the Domini 400 Social Index (DS400 Index.), the KLD Catholic Values 400 Index (CV400 Index), and the Dow Jones Islamic Market Index (DJIMI). The second objective of the thesis is to contrast the three Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Indices with the Standard and Poor's 500 index (SP500). In a bid to meet investor demands, mutual fund managers have developed un-conventional portfolios that factor in ethics, sustainability, social, religious and environmental factors that affect returns.

This paper discusses Customer Relationship Management in two sharply contrasting business cultures: the United States and Russia. CRM in Russia is yet in its infancy as the economy emerges from 200 years …

Nepalese Governmental Accounting Development In The 1950s And Early 1960s: An Attempt To Institutionalize Expenditure Accounting, Pawan Adhikari, Frode Mellemvik

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper aims at disseminating knowledge about the evolution of expenditure accounting in the government of Nepal. In doing so, the paper examines emerging ideas in the aftermath of the political change of 1951 in Nepal, and traces the processes of development and institutionalization of expenditure accounting during the course of two decades, the 1950s and early 1960s, with particular reference to the institutional forces at work. An interesting feature of Nepalese accounting reforms before and after the political change was the active participation of India, the United Nations, and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). At the outset …
