Roles Of Acquirer Financial Advisors In M&A Deal Completion, Scarlett Pho
Senior Theses
The central theme that this thesis addresses is the role of valuation by investment banks who act as financial advisors to M&A buyers by answering two questions relating to the process. The first question is if buyers should hire investment banks for a higher chance of success of deals. For the second question, I will examine buyers who hire investment banks for some certain characteristics of deals. This study focuses on M&A deals that happened between 2012 and 2015, especially between advisor and nonadvisor, successful and failed deals. The conclusion presented in this thesis will be contributable to the understanding …
The Effects Of Bank Lobbying And Elections Surprises, Gregory Logan Tarbet
The Effects Of Bank Lobbying And Elections Surprises, Gregory Logan Tarbet
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This paper examines the stock market reaction to banks that lobby relative to banks that did not lobby in the period around the November 9, 2016, U.S. presidential election. Using three different methods of event studies to calculate the cumulative average return, we find that lobbying in banks has a meaningful relationship to an abnormal increase in those firm’s stock prices. Then we attempt to control for both the systemic importance and size of these institutions by performing cross-sectional regressions that include matched size, and the systemic nature of the banks. The results suggest that a heavily regulated industry such …

Consumer Credit Card Debt And Immigrants: A Cross-Sectional Study Of U.K. Immigrants’ Financial Capability, Paul Wesley Thompson
Consumer Credit Card Debt And Immigrants: A Cross-Sectional Study Of U.K. Immigrants’ Financial Capability, Paul Wesley Thompson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed in this study is the ubiquitous nature and high level of consumer debt associated with certain demographics; however, research in the context of immigrants in the U.K. are limited. The problem is the lack of information about the association between credit card debt and immigrants, specifically on whether the income gap between U.K. immigrants and British citizens affects the level of consumer debt. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional correlational study is to examine whether there is an association between the income gap that exists between immigrants and British citizens and their respective levels of consumer debt, …

Relationship Of Organizational Structure And Capital Structure On Financial Performance Of Banks, Adam Kakande
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Poor financial performance is a challenge for policy makers, industry regulators, investors, bankers, and business leaders. Understanding the relationship between organizational structure, capital structure, and financial performance is vital for business leaders to promote their long-term survival. Grounded in agency cost theory, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between organizational structure, capital structure, and financial performance of new commercial banks in Uganda to promote their long-term survival. Archived data were analyzed using 60 bank-quarter observations of 5 Ugandan commercial banks closed within 5 years after opening, restructuring, merging, or undergoing an acquisition by another …
Three Essays On Banking, Xinming Li
Three Essays On Banking, Xinming Li
Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation includes three essays related to banking. In the first essay, I identify an important channel through which stronger legal enforcement boosts the real economy – by increasing bank liquidity creation. Results suggest that effective enforceability of contracts increases total, asset-side, liability-side, and off-balance sheet- side liquidity creation, implying favorable causal real economic effects.
In the second essay, we conduct the first broad-based international study on bank- level failures covering 92 countries over 2000-2014 and investigate national culture values as bank failure determinants. We find individualism and masculinity are positively associated with bank failure but operate through different channels. …
The Fall Of The 10-K Report: Measuring The Impact Of Accounting Ratios On Financial Performance, Matthew Daruty
The Fall Of The 10-K Report: Measuring The Impact Of Accounting Ratios On Financial Performance, Matthew Daruty
CMC Senior Theses
The annual 10-K report has historically been the most important aspect in assessing the position of a publicly held company. However, as the flow of information has increased with the dawn of new technologies, less and less attention has been paid to these audited financial statements. In order to assess if investors are still reacting to the information contained in the annual report, this paper examines the relationship between accounting ratios and stock price in banks traded on United States stock exchanges. By examining accounting ratios instead of simply looking at Earnings Per Share, new information was revealed regarding what …

Human Resources Strategies For Retaining Employees In St. Lucian Banks, Thecla Fitz-Lewis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Retention issues have been a challenge for human resources (HR) leaders for years. Organization HR leaders face employee retention challenges that lead to the loss of talented employees and a decline in the organization's quality of service, which negatively affects profitability. Based on Schultz's human capital theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies HR leaders used to retain employees. Data collection included company archival documentation review and face-to-face semistructured interviews with 11 purposefully selected HR leaders from 3 banks in the northern region of St. Lucia. Data analysis included using Yin's 5-step method, coding the …
Essays On Financial Intermediation, Yong Kyu Gam
Essays On Financial Intermediation, Yong Kyu Gam
Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations
Chapter 1 investigates a regulatory spillover effect of the Basel III liquidity standard on the real economy through a series of difference-in-difference estimations. Since the Basel Committee’s official endorsement for the new liquidity regulation in December 2010, a bank exposed to high liquidity risk reduced its loan proportion significantly, making a negative real effect on its surrounding economy via a bank-lending-channel. The new regulation also induced a bank with a weak liquid balance sheet to raise its deposit rate aggressively, generating a liquidity problem in a nearby local bank through a deposit-competition-channel and ultimately curbing an expansion of the local …
Ceo Compensation Structure And Capital Ratios At Us Banks, Bradley Heuer
Ceo Compensation Structure And Capital Ratios At Us Banks, Bradley Heuer
HON499 projects
Certain CEO compensation tactics have promoted excessive risk taking at banks in previous years. In response, regulation regarding compensation structure was released by the US government. In addition, regulation regarding capital risk was published by the US government in the years following the Panic of 2008. CEO compensation consists of both cash-based and incentive based forms of compensation. Risk can be measured using various methods, but for the purposes of this paper risk was measured by observing capital ratios at US banks. I evaluate the interaction between CEO compensation structure and capital ratios at US banks in an attempt to …

A Comparison Between Administrative Leadership In Higher Education And Change-Oriented Leadership In Banks, Glenn King Jr
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Organizational environments continually change. Organizations that do not meet the demands for change do not survive. The required changes differ for banks versus universities, suggesting that leaders in each type of organization need to use unique styles to adapt to their unique environments. The purpose of this quantitative research study was to test a contingency theory of leadership that leaders of banks are change-oriented, whereas leaders of higher educational institutions are administrative in their style. The research questions dealt with differences in the uncertainty of internal operations and the external environment of banks versus universities, and the leadership style most …

This dissertation consists of two chapters that investigate earnings management through the recognition of bargain purchase gains in the banking industry and in other industries.
Chapter 1 In business acquisitions where the fair value of net assets acquired exceeds the consideration paid, acquiring firms recognize bargain purchase gains under ASC 805. The determination of the fair value of net assets at date of acquisition gives acquiring management considerable flexibility in judgments. In this chapter, I focus on bargain purchase acquisitions in the banking industry, and find that acquirer utilizes bargain purchase gains to avoid negative earnings and earnings decline. The …

Leadership Styles And Learning For Performance Within Commercial Banks In Kenya, Teckie Michelle Karoki
Leadership Styles And Learning For Performance Within Commercial Banks In Kenya, Teckie Michelle Karoki
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The literature indicates that leaders influence the establishment of organizational learning culture (OLC) by the application of transformational (TFO), transactional (TAC), and passive-avoidant (PAV) styles. Further, the literature links OLC to the financial performance of organizations by leadership involvement in establishing learning organizations. However, the manner in which the practice of OLC occurs and the relationship of OLC with TFO, TAC, and PAV is unclear, as is the link between OLC and financial performance (ROA); especially for growing economies outside North America. The purpose of this study was to address this gap in the literature through a quantitative study of …
Did Antebellum Illinois Free Banks Take Undue Risk With Their Bond Portfolios?: An Analysis Of Decision-Making Prior To The Civil War, Scott N. Clayman
Did Antebellum Illinois Free Banks Take Undue Risk With Their Bond Portfolios?: An Analysis Of Decision-Making Prior To The Civil War, Scott N. Clayman
Business and Economics Honors Papers
Free banks in Illinois could issue bank notes backed by state or U.S. bond collateral. A decline in bond prices as the Civil War approached resulted in banks being unable to redeem their noteholders in gold specie and subsequently resulted in bank failures. Previously economic historians believed that failures of free banks were due to wildcat banking rather than the portfolio allocation of free banks. Over time, other researchers have found that banks that took greater ex ante risk prior to the failure were more likely to fail. There were other price declines during the 1850s, in particular the Panic …

Essays On Moral Hazard, Bank Size, Influence, And Risk At The Federal Home Loan Banks, James Cash Acrey
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Two chapters of research on the Federal Home Loan Bank advances, bank risk, and influence are presented. Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) advances are a growing source of debt financing for US banks. FHLB advances are not priced according to bank credit risk, creating potential for moral hazard. FHLB advances are positively related to contemporary bank risk, but the relation between prior advances and subsequent risk varies between large vs. small banks depending upon the risk measure used. The relation between FHLB advances and various measures of bank risk varies between pre-crisis (2005-07), crisis (2008-09), and post-crisis (2010-12) periods differently …

The Effect Of Mergers And Acquisitions On The Wealth, Risk, And Efficiency Of Latin American Banks, Felice Policastro-Caccavale
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Over the last few years, mergers and acquisitions within Latin America's banking sector have significantly increased. From 1995 to 2003, Latin American countries experienced more than one thousand bank merger and acquisition deals. The majority of these mergers and acquisitions have occurred between domestic and foreign banks and, as a result, foreign banks now control more than fifty percent of the banking assets of Latin America's largest economies. In addition to the increased presence of foreign banks in Latin America, the process of mergers and acquisitions has reduced the number of banks in most Latin American countries and this has …

Three Essays On The Use Of Financial Derivatives By Latin American Banks In Brazil, Chile And Mexico, Andres E. Rivas-Chavez
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
During the 1990s, Latin American countries implemented policies aimed at liberalizing their financial markets. Latin American countries deregulated the domestic financial and banking industries, removed controls on international capital flows, and promoted development of their domestic stock market. These countries implemented financial liberalization policies and programs in order to stimulate domestic savings and growth. Through financial liberalization they also attempted to reduce the direct intervention of the state in the economy and improve their financial infrastructure.
The implementation of such policies has led to an increase in capital flows to Latin America, an increase in the number of foreign banks, …
Determinants Of Loan Losses In National Banks: Size, Regulation, And The Aicpa Model, Randy Marl Reed
Determinants Of Loan Losses In National Banks: Size, Regulation, And The Aicpa Model, Randy Marl Reed
Doctoral Dissertations
Because of recent failures, the AICPA Banking Committee has developed a normative model citing specific variables for auditors to use in bank audits. This research has examined that AICPA model.
In addition, the Auditing Principles Board has identified several areas of concern for auditing internal control structures. Research into size and regulation from other sources has indicated that both are significant modifiers of financial models. Regulations now require banks and holding companies of more than $500 million in assets to submit to an annual independent audit.
The primary purpose of this research was to determine whether the AICPA normative model …

In order to do this, five fields of interest were chosen. These are, banking practice and legislation, agriculture, public finance, labor problems and trusts. I have attempted to draw some conclusions which will show a definite trend toward certain attitudes of thinking of the present day which are different from the attitudes …
The Trend Of Financing Urban Property, Irvine F. Wilson
The Trend Of Financing Urban Property, Irvine F. Wilson
Master's Theses
This thesis is intended as a survey of trends in financing urban property. Urban property, as construed by this study, includes all incorporated cities, towns, and villages. This interpretation is used firstly in order that a complete analysis might be pictured and secondly, because investments in property are not necessarily restricted because of the number of inhabitants in a particular town or city. The report abounds not only in graphs and curves which indicate movements, but also explanatory material and tabulated statistics when deemed necessary to present a complete authentic picture.
