Balancing Conservation And Enjoyment: A Case Study Of Sustainable Tourism In Yellowstone National Park, Rachel E. Killen

This paper explores the successes and challenges of integrating sustainable tourism in the US National Park System, focusing on the partnership between the National Park Service and the hospitality concessioner in Yellowstone National Park. Through a survey questionnaire and semi-structured interviews, managers of the hospitality company in Yellowstone revealed that their successful collaboration with NPS has resulted in the integration of diverse perspectives and fulfillment of the dual mandate of a US National Park. Advertising for America’s National Parks comes in many different forms but is highly limited for national parks with lower visitation rates and less funding. Congaree National Park located just outside of Columbia, South Carolina has a small budget for advertising and goals to increase their visitation rates and visitor diversity. Particularly, Congaree rangers hope to increase visitation from the local Black community which surrounds Congaree National Park. Costs of investment were weighed against capital contributions throughout our campaign. While the film serves to inspire, entertain, and inform, the paper dives deeper into the brand-building, cost-savings, and logistics of the trip. In the end, we more than doubled our initial investment and had an awesome time while doing it.

While students go abroad to learn about new cultures and advance their language skills, there is typically an initial culture shock when entering these unfamiliar environments. It is important to understand the causes and effects of culture shock, in particular experiences in Asia, a region whose culture is significantly different from the individualist cultures in the United States and Europe. While being exposed to new cultures is increasingly important for our interdependent world, it becomes more important to observe reactions to that exposure and understand how those reactions form or how to handle them.
