How Has The Food Industry Manipulated The Way Consumers Perceive Food And Health?, Angelina Garavente
Honors College Theses
Food is the most advertised commodity in the United States and food corporations spend on average over $36 billion a year on marketing and advertising (Albritton 172). Seventy percent of total advertising goes to market convenience foods, candy, snacks, soft drinks, desserts and alcohol (Albritton 172). As a result of the wide range of marketing on an even wider range of products, consumers have been taught to feel they have a considerable amount of choice. Ironically despite the array of brand-name commodities that give off this impression, only a few giant corporations control much of what is being offered.

In late 2005, Shawn Warren, head of biscuits, Asia Pacific for Kraft, was in desperate need of a quick turnaround strategy. Oreo, after nearly 10 years in the China market was facing the imminent disaster of being completely pulled from the shelves. Local retail channels, along with company headquarters near Chicago, had finally grown impatient of the iconic product's lacklustre sales. When Warren described the turnaround in March 2012, he said, "The first step to solving a problem is to admit you have one. We are committed to have this brand and put resources behind it."

Food Anxieties: Issues For The Food Sector, Denise Kelly
Doctoral

The aim of this research was to explore the nature of food anxiety in Ireland and the potential implications for the food sector. The research objectives were to determine the range of issues causing food anxiety in Irish consumers; to investigate the impact of food anxiety on food choice behaviour; to examine the potential of food anxiety as a segmentation variable for categorizing consumers; and to identify antecedents to the experience of food anxiety. A sequential, mixed methodology …

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business
For most people, going to a restaurant ends with a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment, not sickness and the possibility of death. This is also true when purchasing products at a local grocery store. However, recent events have cast doubt on the safety of America’s food supply. The issue facing risk managers is how to reduce these escalating risks and manage any unfortunate outcomes. The cost of food contamination can be devastating to a business financially, and can result in both direct losses related to product recall expenses and indirect losses such as lost reputation and goodwill. By reducing the …

Food Animals Are Suffering: Hsus Intensifies Campaign To Eliminate Cruelty On 'Factory Farms'
Close Up Reports

As consumers, we first meet the cattle, chickens, pigs, sheep, and dairy . products at our local supermarkets. The meat is wrapped in clear plastic. The eggs are attractively displayed. The butter comes in cubes. And the veal is already breaded for our quick consumption. The animals that suffered for our daily meals are anonymous creatures we'll never meet.
Our food delivery system is one of the most efficient in the world. The large corporate farms that produce most of our …
