Deepfakes Generated By Generative Adversarial Networks, Olympia A. Paul Nov 2021

Deepfakes Generated By Generative Adversarial Networks, Olympia A. Paul

Honors College Theses

Deep learning is a type of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that mimics the workings of the human brain in processing data such as speech recognition, visual object recognition, object detection, language translation, and making decisions. A Generative adversarial network (GAN) is a special type of deep learning, designed by Goodfellow et al. (2014), which is what we call convolution neural networks (CNN). How a GAN works is that when given a training set, they can generate new data with the same information as the training set, and this is often what we refer to as deep fakes. CNN takes an input …

Using Modern Portfolio Theory To Create Efficient Portfolios From The S&P500, Dylan Rhoads Nov 2021

Using Modern Portfolio Theory To Create Efficient Portfolios From The S&P500, Dylan Rhoads

Honors College Theses

The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (S&P 500) serves as a proxy for the U.S. equity market and is among the most widely cited financial instruments in the world. Its risk and return can be accepted as the market’s, leading it to be the benchmark for performance in many investment settings. Modern portfolio theory helps to quantify performance by explaining the relationship between risk and return. Every portfolio has its own return and risk level, with the optimal allocations falling on the “Efficient Frontier”, that is the line on a graph that connects the portfolios that have the maximum return …

Can Marketing Content Strategies Help Promote Sustainability On Social Media?: Comparing The Effectiveness Of Owned Versus Earned Endorsement, Eilleen R. Plante Nov 2021

Can Marketing Content Strategies Help Promote Sustainability On Social Media?: Comparing The Effectiveness Of Owned Versus Earned Endorsement, Eilleen R. Plante

Honors College Theses

The importance of sustainability is rising as consumers make more environmentally conscious purchases (Neilson, 2018). Despite the growing demand for sustainable products, there is still a consumer attitude-behavior gap concerning sustainability. Social media has proven to be an effective way to promote sustainability (Saeed, Farooq, & Kersten, 2019), and social media influencers are more effective advertising agents compared to traditional advertising (Araujo, Neijens, & Vliegenthart, 2016). However, the best way to advertise sustainable products through social media-based advertising has not yet been studied. This study examines the different content marketing strategies on social media - owned social media posts and …

Her Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Resume Photos And Perceived Morality, Hannah Daab

Honors College Theses

It was once believed that a woman’s physical appearance benefited her in many aspects of life, including her career. Following the progression of the #MeToo movement, society has seen beauty become a liability for women in the workplace. This investigation dives into this phenomenon and redirects the focus to an earlier point in the timeline of a female’s professional career: the hiring process. Specifically, this paper begins to uncover an answer to the long- standing question of whether or not a woman should include a photo of herself on her resumé or CV. Across two quantitative studies, I investigate whether …

The Effects Of Arra Funding On Broadband Availability And Adoption, Anna K. Waide Apr 2021

The Effects Of Arra Funding On Broadband Availability And Adoption, Anna K. Waide

Honors College Theses

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), passed in 2009, provided funds to help the American economy recover from the 2008 economic crisis. More than $7 billion was designated to the advancement of broadband services, and critically, improvement in broadband infrastructure and adoption in underserved areas. This thesis sought to discover if there is a significant causal relationship between the amount of ARRA funding given to a U.S. state and its increase of broadband availability/adoption rates between 2010 (when all ARRA projects were announced), 2013, and 2016 (after all projects were completed). After running various regressions, I found that there …

Cross-Border Acquisitions: A Country-Level Analysis, Jenny M. Heller

Honors College Theses

Country-level factors play an important role in the success or failure of cross-border acquisitions (i.e., acquisitions where the acquiring and target firms are in two different countries). If we are to understand and improve the success rates of these acquisitions, we must explore this issue in more depth. As globalization continues to emerge around the world, cross-border acquisitions have become a common way to enter a new foreign market. There is limited research available so far for these acquisitions on the country-level. Currently, cross-border acquisitions have failure rates of up to 70%. We analyze acquisition premium and use three dimensions …

Modeling The Stock Market Through Game Theory, Kylie Hannafey Apr 2021

Modeling The Stock Market Through Game Theory, Kylie Hannafey

Honors College Theses

Game Theory is used on many occasions to help us understand interactions between decision-makers. The famous Nash equilibrium is a steady state in a model that shows the interaction of different players, in which no player can do better by choosing a different action if the actions of the other players do not change. These two concepts can be applied to numerous situations that vary in types of players, but for our research, we are focusing on businesses in the stock market. The main objective is to use Game Theory to analyze data collected from the stock market, model our …

Influence Tactics As A Function Of Supervisor Age, Zachary R. Weiner Mar 2021

Influence Tactics As A Function Of Supervisor Age, Zachary R. Weiner

Honors College Theses

Within the field of Human Resource Management, the topic of age related differences within the workforce has been of interest as a method of understanding the dynamics of workforce management. This study aims to develop a deeper understanding in age related differences by focusing specifically on influence tactics subordinates use to influence their supervisors. The current research shows gaps in the understanding of how the comparative age of a supervisor (the age of a supervisor compared to the age of a subordinate i.e. older, younger) affect the use of influence tactics. This study shows how the comparative age of a …
