Secured Data Masking Framework And Technique For Preserving Privacy In A Business Intelligence Analytics Platform, Osama Ali Dec 2018

Secured Data Masking Framework And Technique For Preserving Privacy In A Business Intelligence Analytics Platform, Osama Ali

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The main concept behind business intelligence (BI) is how to use integrated data across different business systems within an enterprise to make strategic decisions. It is difficult to map internal and external BI’s users to subsets of the enterprise’s data warehouse (DW), resulting that protecting the privacy of this data while maintaining its utility is a challenging task. Today, such DW systems constitute one of the most serious privacy breach threats that an enterprise might face when many internal users of different security levels have access to BI components. This thesis proposes a data masking framework (iMaskU: Identify, Map, Apply, …

Toward A Better Understanding And Management Of Product Recall, Vivek Astvansh Nov 2018

Toward A Better Understanding And Management Of Product Recall, Vivek Astvansh

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Product recalls have become increasingly common across product categories and countries. Although recalls pose adverse consequences for businesses, regulatory agencies, and society, they also test these stakeholders’ resilience in the face of adversity. Perhaps because scholars from multiple disciplines have studied recalls for nearly four decades now, a large number of terms, most of which stay undefined, has been used to describe recalls and several closely related yet distinct phenomena. We also lack a framework that can help synthesize our knowledge and guide us toward questions that are both interesting and relevant. Finally, there has been no attention to the …

Corporate Innovation Activism In A Multidivisional Firm: Rationale, Genesis, Evolution, Zdenek Necas Oct 2018

Corporate Innovation Activism In A Multidivisional Firm: Rationale, Genesis, Evolution, Zdenek Necas

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Various streams of foundational management literatures imply that corporate managers can play a role in the management of intra-organizational innovation processes. However, management scholars have largely assumed that corporate managers do not become actively involved in the management of intra-organizational innovation processes occurring within multidivisional firms. This assumption contrasts with the importance given in the management literature to innovation as an enabler of organizational long-term survival. To address this contrast, my dissertation explores why and how corporate managers adopt an active approach to the management of intra-organizational innovation processes in complex multidivisional firms.

In the first paper, I map extant …

Three Essays On Intensive Care Unit Capacity Planning, Felipe F. Rodrigues Oct 2018

Three Essays On Intensive Care Unit Capacity Planning, Felipe F. Rodrigues

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a resource-intensive, costly environment. Data gathered from patients during their stay in the ICU has traditionally been used for clinical purposes, but can have a significant impact on healthcare capacity planning and patient flow. There is a need to study how metrics collected in Canadian ICUs, such as the Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS) score and the Nine Equivalents of Nursing Manpower Use Score (NEMS) can be used to improve capacity planning decisions. Using discrete-event simulation, statistical, survival and machine learning models, I have built long- and short-term capacity planning models to help hospital …

Antecedents And Consequences Of Share Distribution In Equity Joint Ventures: A Pricing-Error Approach And Empirical Evidence, Liang Liang Wang Sep 2018

Antecedents And Consequences Of Share Distribution In Equity Joint Ventures: A Pricing-Error Approach And Empirical Evidence, Liang Liang Wang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Equity joint ventures (EJVs) have been a widely used and extensively studied governance structure for inter-firm cooperation. To date, the literature has largely overlooked share distribution between EJV partners although it is critical to the organization and operation of EJVs. Only recently has a pricing-error rule of share distribution been proposed; it argues that partners should align the equity split with the relative size of the error committed in pricing assets into the EJV. As the first conceptual guideline on share distribution in EJVs, this rule has yet to be empirically verified. Furthermore, no study has sought to identify and …

Foreign Direct Investment In Global Cities And Co-Ethnic Clusters: Characteristics, Performance, And Survival, Dwarka Chakravarty Aug 2018

Foreign Direct Investment In Global Cities And Co-Ethnic Clusters: Characteristics, Performance, And Survival, Dwarka Chakravarty

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation examines the characteristics, profitability, and survival of multinational enterprise (MNE) foreign direct investment (FDI) in North American “global” cities (GCs), such as Los Angeles, New York, and Toronto. Across GCs and their metropolitan areas (Metros), MNEs often co-locate with their home country and co-industry peers in “co-ethnic” and “co-ethnic, co-industry” (CECI) clusters. Despite their substantial influence on the world economy GCs are relatively underexplored as location units of analysis in International Business (IB) research. Accordingly, I address three research questions. First, how do subsidiary and MNE characteristics differ between GCs, Metros, and other locations? Second, how does subsidiary …

Three Essays On The Financial Capital Markets, Diep Nguyen Jul 2018

Three Essays On The Financial Capital Markets, Diep Nguyen

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis is comprised of three integrated studies highlighting the financial capital markets and corporate finance decisions in response to market conditions.

The first study (Chapter 2) looks at the stock-like/bond-like behavior of Canadian income trusts, in particular how the sensitivities of income trusts’ returns to stock and bond market factors change over time, around different events, and depending on corporate strategy and firm characteristics. We find that income trusts are priced more like bonds compared to matched corporations before a surprise announcement that removes the tax advantage of income trusts (the Tax Fairness Plan announcement), while they become more …

Three Essays In Empirical Finance, Srikanth Ramani Jul 2018

Three Essays In Empirical Finance, Srikanth Ramani

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis includes three essays in mutual funds, empirical finance, and asset pricing.

The first essay explores the relation between mutual fund ownership and how it affects firms’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) engagements. The essay classifies mutual funds into CSR-friendly and CSR-unfriendly funds using a holdings-based, value-weighted mutual fund corporate social rating (MFCSR). The empirical results show that firms with higher CSR-friendly ownership are associated with increased future levels of CSR and the firms with higher CSR-unfriendly ownership are associated with decreased future levels of CSR. This result is robust after controlling for many observable firm characteristics and firm-specific unobservable …

Examining Rating Source Differences In Narrative Performance Feedback, Kevin Doyle Jul 2018

Examining Rating Source Differences In Narrative Performance Feedback, Kevin Doyle

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The purpose of the present study was to examine the narrative feedback quality and content of comments from supervisors, peers, and subordinates in a multisource performance feedback context. Research on performance management interventions tends to focus on issues such as rater training, scale development, scale formats, and reducing test and rater bias. However, other components in performance management interventions have received little attention, including narrative feedback. Narrative feedback takes the form of written comments describing the ratee’s performance on different dimensions. The narrative feedback quality variables included favorability, specificity, goal content, and feedback length. Predictor variables of narrative feedback quality …

The Rise Of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations: Coordination And Growth Within Cryptocurrencies, Ying-Ying Hsieh Jun 2018

The Rise Of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations: Coordination And Growth Within Cryptocurrencies, Ying-Ying Hsieh

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The rise of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin is driving a paradigm shift in organization design. Their underlying blockchain technology enables a novel form of organizing, which I call the “decentralized autonomous organization” (DAO). This study explores how tasks are coordinated within DAOs that provide decentralized and open payment systems that do not rely on centralized intermediaries (e.g., banks).

Guided by a Bitcoin pilot case study followed by a three-stage research design that uses both qualitative and quantitative data, this inductive study examines twenty DAOs in the cryptocurrency industry to address the following question: How are DAOs coordinated to enable growth? …

Three Essays On Structural Models, Xinghua Zhou May 2018

Three Essays On Structural Models, Xinghua Zhou

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

My thesis includes three papers on contingent claims valuation of corporate securities using structural models of credit risk. Our study focuses on structural models and their applications in estimating damages in security class actions, option pricing and warrant pricing. Securities class actions typically involve some misrepresentation by a firm that overstates its true value. In securities class actions econometric models are used to assess damages to shareholders. However, studies on measuring damages for debt-holders are limited. My first paper uses a modified Merton framework to measure the impact of misrepresentation on the value of other components (e.g., debt, warrants) of …

Invisible Labour: Support-Service Workers In India’S Information Technology Industry, Indranil Chakraborty May 2018

Invisible Labour: Support-Service Workers In India’S Information Technology Industry, Indranil Chakraborty

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The dissertation investigates the life, working conditions and urban experience of support-service workers in the Information Technology (IT) sector of India: the janitors, security guards, fast food delivery service professionals and car pool drivers who work in and around technology parks that develop software applications for a world-market. The common experiences of these employees are migration from rural contexts to a radically modern employment setting, where they work long hours with minimal benefits in informal conditions that often violate basic labour laws. The thesis draws on quantitative and qualitative research, and in particular on analysis and interpretation of hundred and …

Two Essays On The Link Between Consumer-Brand Relationships And Customer Brand Loyalty, Mansur Khamitov May 2018

Two Essays On The Link Between Consumer-Brand Relationships And Customer Brand Loyalty, Mansur Khamitov

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Customer brand loyalty is one of the most important concepts to consumer researchers and marketing practitioners. A considerable amount of research over the last 20 years documents that different consumer-brand relationship constructs, such as those characterized by attachment, identification, brand love, self-brand connection and trust, are positive predictors of customer brand loyalty. However, there is little consensus on what consumer-brand relationship constructs are superior predictors of loyalty and under what conditions each type performs relatively better. To advance understanding of how well different consumer-brand relationship constructs drive customer brand loyalty and to help companies improve the effectiveness of their relationship-building …

Contemporary Perspectives On The Internationalization Of Firms, Maximilian Stallkamp May 2018

Contemporary Perspectives On The Internationalization Of Firms, Maximilian Stallkamp

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation contributes new insights to research on the internationalization of firms. Whereas prior research has focused mostly on the country as the main locational unit of analysis, I examine internationalization from both subnational and (supranational) regional perspectives. Moreover, I investigate the impact of digitalization on internationalization, by studying how ‘digital’ firms expand internationally.

Essay 1 examines how the initial subnational location choices of multinational enterprises (MNEs) in a host country (China) affect their subsequent investments in the same country. I argue that subnational locations with dense agglomerations of MNEs from the same home country can provide firms with co-ethnic …

Capacity For Sport For Development, Ryan Clutterbuck Mar 2018

Capacity For Sport For Development, Ryan Clutterbuck

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation explores the management of local sport for development (SFD) in Canada. It uncovers the organizational capacity for local SFD, the processes involved in building capacity to achieve social change through sport, and the perceptions and experiences of National Sport Organization (NSO) leaders regarding SFD. Study 1 explores and uncovers the organizational capacity for local SFD, following Hall et al.’s (2003) framework for non-profit organizational capacity. Using semi-structured interviews, 17 local SFD organizations were asked to describe specific organizational aspects that enabled them to achieve their goals. They identified: familiarity with development issues; grant funding; facilities; and social capital, …

Our Identities Are Different: Unpacking The Presence And Absence Of Organizational Identity In Corporate Apologies, Dilek Gergin Mar 2018

Our Identities Are Different: Unpacking The Presence And Absence Of Organizational Identity In Corporate Apologies, Dilek Gergin

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Corporate public apologies are becoming increasingly common, despite consumers' apparent, widespread dissatisfaction with the statement that they are given. Following Goffman's (1971) classification of accounts and apologies, I argue that public demands for an apology may include an implicit demand for a change in the organizational identity. However, organizational identity and apology literatures do not consider such a sudden shift as feasible, or advisable. Combining insights from these literatures, I argue that factors that seem to restrict the feasibility and decrease the advisability of a sudden shift in organizational identity can in fact counter each other to offer a possible, …

Some Applications Of Higher-Order Hidden Markov Models In The Exotic Commodity Markets, Heng Xiong Feb 2018

Some Applications Of Higher-Order Hidden Markov Models In The Exotic Commodity Markets, Heng Xiong

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The liberalisation of regional and global commodity markets over the last several decades resulted in certain commodity price behaviours that require new modelling and estimation approaches. Such new approaches have important implications to the valuation and utilisation of commodity derivatives. Derivatives are becoming increasingly crucial for market participants in hedging their exposure to volatile price swings and in managing risks associated with derivative trading. The modelling of commodity-based variables is an integral part of risk management and optimal-investment strategies for commodity-linked portfolios. The characteristics of commodity price evolution cannot be captured sufficiently by one-state driven models even with the inclusion …
