Developing And Refining Outcome Measurement Suites: An Example From The National Continence Management Strategy, Janet E. Sansoni, Nicholas Marosszeky, Emily Sansoni

Sydney Business School - Papers

This paper provides a brief overview of the Australian National Continence Management Strategy with respect to its activities related to the assessment of incontinence, the use of measures to evaluate the outcomes of incontinence treatment interventions, and the production of Australian prevalence and burden of disease estimates.

It highlights the Continence Outcomes Measurement Suite (COMS) project, in particular, which has moved through a number of developmental stages. Stage 1 involved the scholarly review of commonly used self-report and clinical assessment measures for both urinary and faecal incontinence against the current definitions provided by the International Continence Society (Thomas, et al., …

Sydney Business School - Papers

[extract] This summary paper provides an overview of recent work undertaken to develop an outcome measurement suite for people with dementia. The aim was to review all the published instruments used for the assessment, diagnosis, screening and outcomes monitoring/evaluation of people with dementia; in order to recommend a set of psychometrically valid measures for clinicians and researchers to use, across a range of different practice settings.

Based on previous work in developing a Continence Outcomes Measurement Suite (Thomas et al, 2006), the analysis combines clinical and academic sources of knowledge in order to produce realistic and useful recommendations. Specifically the …

Formative Versus Reflective Measurement Models: Two Applications Of Formative Measurement, T. Coltman, T. M. Devinney, D. F. Midgley, S. Venaik

This paper presents a framework that helps researchers to design and validate both formative and reflective measurement models. The framework draws from the existing literature and includes both theoretical and empirical considerations. Two important examples, one from international business and one from marketing, illustrate the use of the framework. Both examples concern constructs that are fundamental to theory-building in these disciplines, and constructs that most scholars measure reflectively. In contrast, applying the framework suggests that a formative measurement model may be more appropriate. These results reinforce the need for all researchers to justify, both theoretically and empirically, their choice of …
