Individuals’ Formal Power And Their Social Network Accuracy, Joshua Eric Marineau
Individuals’ Formal Power And Their Social Network Accuracy, Joshua Eric Marineau
Theses and Dissertations--Management
Previous research has suggested that individuals differ in their accuracy of perceptions of the social environment, and some research suggests that powerful individuals in particular tend to be lazy, disinterested observers of the social world. A handful of field studies and lab experiments linking power with individuals’ perceptions of others’ social networks have generally supported this view. However, recent theory addressing the psychological consequences of power for the power-holder claim that in certain circumstances and for some kinds of social information, power is linked to increased accuracy of social information. This dissertation tests this idea by drawing on social network …
The Effect Of Personal Scandal On Celebrity Athletes And Shopper’S Purchase Intentions And Attitude Favorability, Mary A. Graham
The Effect Of Personal Scandal On Celebrity Athletes And Shopper’S Purchase Intentions And Attitude Favorability, Mary A. Graham
Theses and Dissertations--Retailing and Tourism Management
Athletes have become more than sports professionals; they are million dollar investments for brand images. Businesses worldwide have transitioned old promotional schemes to athlete endorsements and have experienced positive reactions to the public change. Athletes connected with consumers on a heroic level and translated the brand’s message to purchasers through the theory of transference of affect (White, Goddard, & Wilbur, 2009). Subsequently, there had been an equal rise in the caution businesses exercised as several athletes found occupancy in negative press. Those involved in scandals posed reputational risks for businesses and could reduce positive transference to consumers. The purpose of …
A Closer Look At Firm--Group "Closeness", Jonathan Ross
A Closer Look At Firm--Group "Closeness", Jonathan Ross
Theses and Dissertations--Accountancy
Firm closeness or comparability is an important concept to investors. Knowing that two firms have been historically close and observing an information announcement by one of the firms gives the investor cues as to the future performance of the other firm. Furthermore, from a methodological point of view, researchers commonly control for firm--group closeness by using industrial classification schemes such as the SIC. To the extent that these schemes group dissimilar firms, the advantage of using these schemes is undermined. This paper more formally examines the comparability concept and develops two new measures of firm--group accounting closeness. Both measures are …
Use Of Visualization In Digital Financial Reporting: The Effect Of Sparkline, Priyanka Meharia
Use Of Visualization In Digital Financial Reporting: The Effect Of Sparkline, Priyanka Meharia
Theses and Dissertations--Business Administration
Information visualization (InfoViz) is an essential component of decision support systems (DSS). Sparklines is a visualization tool. This study examines if Sparklines in digital financial reports aids novice investors and if so under what circumstances? Does it enhances decision-making performance and facilitates effective decision-making experience? Additionally, does it lowers decision making effort; reduces dilution effect from non-relevant data in financial reports and mitigates recency bias in using digital financial reports?
The hypothesis is guided by the theory of Proximity Compatibility Principle and the Theory of Cognitive Fit. The research methodology for this study is a repeated measure, controlled laboratory based …
An Investigation Into Long-Run Abnormal Returns Using Propensity Score Matching, Sunayan Acharya
An Investigation Into Long-Run Abnormal Returns Using Propensity Score Matching, Sunayan Acharya
Theses and Dissertations--Business Administration
This is a study in two parts. In part-1, I identify several methods of estimating long-run abnormal returns prevalent in the finance literature and present an alternative using propensity score matching. I first demonstrate the concept with a simple simulation using generated data. I then employ historical returns from CRSP and randomly select events from the dataset using various alternating criteria. I test the efficacy of different methods in terms of type-I and type-II errors in detecting abnormal returns over 12- 36- and 60- month periods. I use various forms of propensity score matching: 1--5 Nearest Neighbors in Caliper using …
The Influence Of Culture: A Comparison Of White American And Hispanic American Teens Information Sources And Store Attribute Preferences, Kelli H. Murphy
The Influence Of Culture: A Comparison Of White American And Hispanic American Teens Information Sources And Store Attribute Preferences, Kelli H. Murphy
Theses and Dissertations--Retailing and Tourism Management
The culture of America is changing now more than ever. With the Hispanic American population growing, it is important for retailers to understand how to market to these changing demographics. This study compares white Americans to Hispanic Americans in regard to store selection influences. Information sources and store attributes are analyzed as factors that influence store selection. It was found that acculturation of Hispanic American teens has created many commonalities between the two cultures. Future research could become be more in depth as to why these things occur or their effect on actual purchases.
Economic Modeling & Optimization Of A Region Specific Multi-Feedstock Biorefinery Supply Chain, William H. Faulkner
Economic Modeling & Optimization Of A Region Specific Multi-Feedstock Biorefinery Supply Chain, William H. Faulkner
Theses and Dissertations--Manufacturing Systems Engineering
The objective of this thesis is to include strategic and tactical level decisions into the biorefinery supply chain design for a specific region while comparing multiple conversion technologies and biomass feedstocks. The allocation of biomass feedstocks, products, and the respective supply chain configuration locations are determined while ensuring the regions monthly biomass availability and product market demand constraints are met. This research considers all actions required to bring the bio-based products to market from harvesting, storing, and processing the biomass to market distribution. Two different conversion technologies are chosen for comparison: one advanced conversion technology and one conventional technology. Potential …
Who You Are And Who You Know: The Influence Of Personenvironment Fit And Social Network Centrality On Individual Performance, Scott Matthew Soltis
Who You Are And Who You Know: The Influence Of Personenvironment Fit And Social Network Centrality On Individual Performance, Scott Matthew Soltis
Theses and Dissertations--Management
Job seekers and employers frequently make application and selection decisions based on how well they believe there is a ‘fit’ with the organization and job. The personenvironment fit literature has strongly supported this practice demonstrating that fit is an antecedent to attraction, selection, and attrition. What has been lacking, however, is evidence that once individuals enter the organization their fit relates to performance. Using a social network analytical lens, I develop a framework that integrates PE fit and social networks to explore antecedents to employee performance. Using this framework, I explore how informal workplace relationships may act as catalysts through …
Strategic Management And Job Satisfaction: Agency-Level Effects In The Federal Government, Tara Bopp
Strategic Management And Job Satisfaction: Agency-Level Effects In The Federal Government, Tara Bopp
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
As strategic planning and human capital strategies become more regulated in the United States government, a decision must be made by federal agency heads. Will agencies fully participate and buy into the process of participative strategic planning and management or will they comply with regulations and reforms merely for the sake of compliance with little further effort? The intent of this study is to show that agencies that choose to do more than simply comply with GPRA and implement strategic planning and management can benefit from their increased effort in by increasing job satisfaction in their workforce.

An Examination Of Corporate Agribusiness Financial Performance: How Agribusinesses Perform Over Time And Under Various Conditions, Sierra J. Enlow
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
While several studies examine the managerial structure of privately owned agribusinesses, few studies take a comprehensive look at publically traded agribusiness firms. Our study examines the historical position of agribusiness compared to the market, and then studies the impact of the global economic and financial crisis. The objective of this study is to pinpoint effects of corporate financial management strategies, commonly researched in financial literature on agribusiness firms’ performance. Through utilizing a quantile regression we find that agribusiness position in times of financial crisis is directly related to firm performance. As we examine internal factors, several interesting impacts of managerial …
