The application of the income method of valuation requires that owner compensation be distinguished from free cash flow. The “proper” parsing of compensation and free cash flow can be the largest point of contention in contested valuation disputes. The preferred method of parsing is the substitution method which says that the proper allocation should be based on the wage that would have to be paid to a non owner employee. In this article I argue that owner employees carry additional responsibilities that are not normally borne by non owner employees. A Student Perspective On The Use Of Team-Based Assessment To Achieve The Requirement To Be Creative: A Study Of Entrepreneurship Studies, Carmen Tideswell

This study reports the findings of a qualitative research project conducted with a group of university students studying entrepreneurship to explore how they perceived a team-based approach to assessment assisted their ability to generate a creative new venture proposal idea. Through the submission of written journals and analysis of these transcripts, it is evident that although initially the group-work approach was perceived with some degree of cynicism by students, upon completion of the task several advantages of working in groups were reported by students. New Venture Growing Pains: When Being Acquired Is An Appropriate Remedy, Timothy Kiessling, Justin Craig

Our empirical research explores acquisitions of small entrepreneurial firms with a focus on the entrepreneurial management team (EMT) of the target firm. Utilizing the theoretical foundations of Resource Based View and Contract Theory we explore the dynamics of post acquisition performance of the target firm and the retention of the EMT. While controlling for firm size, type of purchase, ownership of target firm and industry dynamics, our results of a questionnaire survey of acquiring firms' top managers suggest that transfer or development of the implicit contract with the target firms' EMT positively affect both retention and performance.

Elbert has started, purchased, and run numerous ventures, most recently BarVision, a software company that helps bars and restaurants manage and prevent losses from liquor pouring by bartenders. Besides BarVision, Elbert is currently operating three additional ventures, employing a total of 11 people full-time. From 2005 to 2008, Elbert received coaching and counseling from the Coleman Center, some of which led to a semi-final placing in a national business plan competition. He has raised $40,000 in capital and recently sold one of his businesses for over $300,000, which he reinvested in a new venture.

Along with a business partner, Ryan launched Chicago’s Dog House in 2009, a quick-service restaurant that specializes in gourmet sausages and hot dog creations. Chicago’s Dog House employs two full-time and five part-time people, was featured on the Food Network’s premiere of the show, Outrageous Foods, in November 2010, and was cash-flow positive within three months of launching. Ryan received extensive coaching from Coleman Center staff for other ventures he researched while at DePaul, and continues to receive informal advising.

Attacking The Roots: Shiraishi Garments Company And An Evolving Thicket Of Business Ethics In China., Bin Jiang, Patrick J. Murphy

This case examines management underpinnings of conducting socially purposeful business in contexts where the labor conditions and ethics are questionable. Shiraishi Garments Company was a Japanese entrepreneurial venture in the clothing industry that evolved into a highly successful multinational company. After its supply chain had extended into China, some ethical labor issues emerged. The decision point is focused squarely on the company’s CEO, who must deal with conflicting forces stemming from his personal values and professional responsibilities. In exploring the issues, the case illustrates business risks of superficial standards auditing of international operations. The case also describes how multinational firms …

How will work be organised in the future? This paper reveals that although there are multiple stories about the future of work, a similar storyline is adopted across many of the competing visions. Most visions firstly squeeze all forms of work into one side or the other or some dichotomy and then proceed to temporally and/or normatively sequence the two sides of the dualism and finally label the resultant one-dimensional and linear trajectory as some -ism, -ation or post-somethingor-other.
