Towards A Framework Of The Process Of Open Innovation: Case Of Acclarent In The Medical Device Industry, Hua-Hsin Wan, Xiaohong Quan

Faculty Publications

Using a case study of Acclarent, a medical device company, this paper attempts to propose a framework to further illustrate the process of open innovation in the medical device industry. We examined five elements in the mechanism of the open innovation process. Our paper shows how the success of Acclarent — a medical device start-up — depends on effective management of the flow of knowledge to satisfy unmet needs, while integrating in-depth knowledge of FDA regulations and third-party payers' reimbursement policies into the product innovation process. Designing Emotion Awareness Interface For Group Recommender Systems, Yu Chen, Pearl Pu May 2014

Designing Emotion Awareness Interface For Group Recommender Systems, Yu Chen, Pearl Pu

Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology

Group recommender systems help users to find items of interest collaboratively. Support for such collaboration has been mainly provided by interfaces that visualize membership awareness, preference awareness and decision awareness. In this paper, we are interested in investigating the roles of emotion awareness interfaces and how they may enable positive group influence. We first describe the design process behind an emotion annotation tool, which we call CoFeel. We then show that it allows users to annotate and visualize group members' emotions in GroupFun, a group music recommender.

Macroeconomic Variables Effect On Us Market Volatility Using Mc-Garch Model, Jang Hyung Cho, Ahmed Elshahat

Faculty Publications

Forecasting equity volatility was thoroughly investigated during the past three decades. The majority based their forecasts on the dynamics of the underlying equity time series. They helped better understand the dynamics of these time series and understand different aspects of volatility. Other models went a step further to include the effect of news announcement on equity volatility. The vast majority ignored the effect of macroeconomic variable or the state of the economy. This paper proposes a volatility-forecasting model that accounts for effect of fundamental macroeconomic variables that reflect the state of the economy. The explanatory variables used measure the stage …

Analysis Of The Relation Between The Spiders Spot And Option Implied Volatility., Stoyu Ivanov

In this study we use spectral analysis on SPY (Spiders) options to examine the relation between option spot and implied volatility for this exchange trade fund. We attempt to address the question is there a relation between the option spot and implied volatility or option implied volatility has no relation with the spot exchange trade fund volatility. We find that this relation does exist for SPY at-the-money call and put options and the in-the-money call and out-of-the-money put options. Using two spectral statistics – the coherence and the phase statistics, we find that the SPY option implied volatility and spot …

An Empirical Examination Of Negative Economic Value Added Firms., Stoyu Ivanov, Kenneth Leong, Janis Zaima

Economic value-added or EVA is a common metric that quantifies the value of the firm. A sample of firms with negative EVAs in 2003 is identified, then four portfolios are formed by ranking firms from the most negative to the least negative EVAs. The returns of the four portfolios are tracked from 2004 through 2009 and correlated to four …

Results Of Environmental Scanning Applied To The Design Of A Deer Management Decision Support System (Dss) For The United States And California, G. Kent Webb

G. Kent Webb

Using freely available internet search tools for environmental scanning, information related to deer management was collected, categorized, and evaluated with the goal of providing public decision support. Key issues raised in the public debate discovered by the search are addressed with relevant information formatted as output for a decision support system – dashboard elements. A graph addresses contradictory reports about the current direction of the deer population; the trend since 2006 appears to be down. Another graph illustrates the approximate longterm population trend; the current U.S. white-tailed deer population is about the same as in 1500. A table summarizes profiles …
