A Growth Model For Understanding Female-Owned Enterprises, Oyedele Ogundana, Amon Simba, Leo-Paul Dana, Eric W. Liguori Aug 2022

A Growth Model For Understanding Female-Owned Enterprises, Oyedele Ogundana, Amon Simba, Leo-Paul Dana, Eric W. Liguori

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

Numerous policy initiatives designed to support the growth of female-owned enterprises in the developing economies have repeatedly failed to achieve their objectives. Research recognizes the lack of contextualized growth models for defining female-owned enterprises in such contexts as the main issue. Thus, and drawing from our qualitative data, we propose a growth model to account for the business development activities of female-owned enterprises from a developing economy perspective. Through analyzing our qualitative data, it emerged that money (access and utilization), management (nonformal education and experience), and market (customer intelligence) were direct determinants of the growth trajectories of female-owned enterprises. Motherhood …

The Potential For Exchange-Traded Futures On Recycled Materials To Improve Recycling Efficiency, Jordan Moore, Daniel Folkinshteyn, Jordan Howell Aug 2022

The Potential For Exchange-Traded Futures On Recycled Materials To Improve Recycling Efficiency, Jordan Moore, Daniel Folkinshteyn, Jordan Howell

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

Recycling has substantial environmental and economic benefits, but the recycling industry is relatively inefficient. Approximately half of all recyclable material is not actually recycled, and this inefficiency is economically and environmentally costly. This paper investigates the potential for exchange-traded futures on recycled materials to increase efficiency for the recycling industry by improving the market quality for firms that buy and sell recycled materials. The aim of this study is to statistically analyze a novel data set of prices for recycled materials to demonstrate the potential efficiency gains to introducing exchange-traded futures on recycled materials. The theoretical basis for this financial …

Exploring The Synergy Between R&D And Advertising And Firm Performance, He-Boong Kwon, Jooh Lee, Laee Choi Jun 2022

Exploring The Synergy Between R&D And Advertising And Firm Performance, He-Boong Kwon, Jooh Lee, Laee Choi

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

Purpose

This paper explores the nonlinear interactions of research and development (R&D) and advertising and their synergistic effect on firm performance using Tobin's Q. This study also aims to investigate differential synergy patterns under varying levels of exports with a precision impact on performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Unlike a conventional statistical approach, this study uniquely presents a neural network approach to explore the dynamic interplay of strategic factors. A multilayer perceptron neural network (MPNN) is designed to capture complex interaction patterns through a predictive analytic process.

Findings

This study finds that the impact of R&D and advertising is positive, with a greater …

Dynamic Interplay Of Operations And R And D Capabilities In U.S. High-Tech Firm: Predictive Impact Analysis, He-Boong Kwon, Jooh Lee, Laee Choi

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

This study presents a unique analytic process in measuring two complementary capabilities (operations and R&D) and assessing their comparative impact on firm performance, represented by Return on Sales (ROS) and Tobin’s Q. First, as a new approach, the combined data envelopment analysis (DEA)-artificial neural network (ANN) measures both capabilities by using data from U.S. high-tech firms. Then, the joint OLS multiple regression (MR)-ANN model investigates the individual effect of these capabilities and further explores their relative influence and the synergistic interplay on ROS and Tobin’s Q. At its core, this study not only proposes an innovative approach to quantifying capabilities, …

Wedeven Associates: Finding New Ways To Develop Novel Solutions To Persistent, Intractable Problems, Richard Jonsen Jan 2022

Wedeven Associates: Finding New Ways To Develop Novel Solutions To Persistent, Intractable Problems, Richard Jonsen

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

Wedeven Associates is a small tribology research and engineering consulting firm located near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The company faced a variety of challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic as did most small businesses in 2020. As the company became fully operational again, Wedeven Associates was approached by a longtime client to solve a tribological problem the client’s engineers had been trying to address for almost 14 years. The catch: Wedeven Associates only had a little over two months to do the work while complying with pandemic-related travel and meeting restrictions. This case tells the story of how the Wedeven Associates team …
