The Role Of Consumer Ethnocentrism On The Effects Of Domestic Vs Foreign Product Failure On Post Consumption Emotions And Complaint Behaviors, Kittinand Bandhumasuta
Marketing Theses & Dissertations
It is well acknowledged that consumer ethnocentrism has a negative effect on evaluations of foreign products, brand-related attitudes toward foreign brands, and purchase intentions of the non-local products. However, an investigation into the role of consumer ethnocentrism at the post-consumption stage had been neglected. Specifically, when a product fails for a consumer. The main purpose of this dissertation is to study the role of consumer ethnocentrism on the post purchase consumption emotions and complaint behaviors. This dissertation proposes that cognitive appraisals of antecedent events and individual social traits will lead to differentiated outcomes. Domestic products that are perceived to be …

This dissertation is to examine the impact of the El Niño phenomenon on the international stock market, both at the aggregate level and the portfolio level.
In first essay, I study the predictive relation between the El Niño phenomenon and international stock market aggregate returns. I find that the El Niño anomaly can predict all 14 countries’ stock returns. Specifically, the El Niño unconditional effect can predict stock return negatively in Japan, Malaysia, and South Africa, while the El Niño conditional on winter season can predict positively stock returns in 13 countries’ stock markets except for Japan. This conditional effect …

Does Machiavelli's The Prince Have Relevant Lessons For Modern High-Tech Managers And Leaders?, Clovia Hamilton
Management Faculty Publications
When we think of Machiavellian conduct in technology companies, we think of cut-throat, cunning, behaviour. Cut-throat competition in technological innovations can be the barrier to market entry (Lee, 2014). The lean philosophy is that managers and leaders are to strive for the efficient and effective use of resources in order to overcome this barrier and gain competitive advantage. In order for there to be cut throats, there have to be cut-throat technology innovation leaders and managers. What the lean philosophy lacks is guidance on how to achieve an efficient and effective use of resources in a cut-throat competitive environment. The …
Impact Of Leadership Styles On Entrepreneurs' Business Success, Hona Amer
Impact Of Leadership Styles On Entrepreneurs' Business Success, Hona Amer
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
Leadership styles play an important role in entrepreneurial businesses in today’s business marketplace. The Full Range Leadership Model provides a framework for transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership styles, as measured by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ), while the ENTRELEAD scale has been used to assess the entrepreneurial leadership style. A review of the literature reveals limited empirical research focused on the effect of entrepreneurial leadership as applied in the contemporary marketplace. Limited research also exists on the effectiveness of the combination of these leadership styles for entrepreneurs in order to positively affect business performance and business longevity. The problem of …

Diversity Team Building: Impact On Virtual Team Performance, Nina C. Magpili-Smith
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Although organizations have addressed diversity issues at the organizational-level with resulting positive employee outcomes, lack of scholarly attention to team-level interventions remain. Team-level interventions would benefit organizations more directly as they address issues directly related to task accomplishment. Since diversity may lead to negative performance results for teams, a team building intervention based on the latest empirical research was developed and tested to address the potential performance losses associated to diversity in decision-making teams. The team building intervention provides six crucial elements, namely (1) direct experience of how deep-level team diversity affect team dynamics, (2) diversity education, (3) cultivation of …

Two Essays On The Impact Of Institutional Structures On Entrepreneurship: Country Level Analysis, Mehdi Sharifi Khobdeh
Management Theses & Dissertations
Entrepreneurship has long been viewed as an engine of innovation and economic growth; however, there is limited understanding of cross-national differences in rates and types of entrepreneurship. This dissertation mainly uses an institutional theory framework to investigate whether shared social knowledge, value systems, and regulations influence differences in rates and types of entrepreneurial activities among countries.
This dissertation’s central research question is addressed in two essays. In Essay 1, I examine what factors explain the recovery of entrepreneurial activities in countries after the 2008 global financial crisis (GFC). Nearly all countries experienced a sharp drop in entrepreneurial activities during the …
Threat Or Challenge? Intensified Job Demands And The Moderating Effect Of Differentiated Transformational Leadership, Benjamin Bass
Threat Or Challenge? Intensified Job Demands And The Moderating Effect Of Differentiated Transformational Leadership, Benjamin Bass
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Over the past 30 years, industrialized democracies have experienced major economic change due to globalization, economic instability, and rapid technological innovation. To remain viable, organizations maximize flexibility through strategies like downsizing, just-in-time inventory, and temporary labor. Consequently, employees face heightened responsibility, variable workloads, and rising job insecurity. While these demands are stressful, at times, some may represent an exciting challenge. Recently, researchers started studying how the long-term intensification of work affects employees via intensified job demands. This dissertation builds on their efforts by exploring short-term job demand intensification. Specifically, the transactional model of stress and the job demands-resources model were …

Two Essays On Forced Ceo Turnover During Envy Merger Waves, And Dividends, Bader Almuhtadi
Finance Theses & Dissertations
Scholars have provided different theories that aim to explain merger waves throughout the years. However, a recent stream of the finance literature addresses the behavioral aspect behind mergers waves and imply that envy motivated CEOs tend to create merger waves. On the other hand, the decision to oust a CEO is considered one of the most important corporate decisions made in the lifetime of corporations. In Essay 1, we participate into the study stream by focusing on whether the incident of forced CEO turnover is higher during the late stages of merger waves where envy turns out to be more …
From Placebo To Panacea: Exploring The Influence Of Price, Suspicion, And Persuasion Knowledge On Consumers’ Perception Of Quality, Vahid Rahmani
From Placebo To Panacea: Exploring The Influence Of Price, Suspicion, And Persuasion Knowledge On Consumers’ Perception Of Quality, Vahid Rahmani
Marketing Theses & Dissertations
Consumers’ associate higher prices with higher levels of quality. Nevertheless, the relationship between price and objective quality (i.e., real quality) in the marketplace is not always strong or even positive. This seemingly paradoxical phenomenon could be explained by either consumers’ lack of access to the product information (which is unlikely as we live in the age of information) or their reluctance/inability to assimilate the available information and modify their price-quality judgments. The current research is built on this latter assumption and attempts to answer two substantive questions that remain to be fully addressed in the pricing literature: First, how can …

Three Essays On Mutual Funds, Fund Management Skills, And Investor Sentiment, Feng Dong
Finance Theses & Dissertations
The mutual fund research focus has switched from whether average active fund managers have fund management skill to whether a subset of active fund managers have skills that produce investor benefits. In this dissertation we participate into the study stream by investigating the relation between managerial skills possessed by mutual fund managers and fund performance.
Essay 1 focuses on whether investor sentiment affects the performance of skilled mutual fund managers. Stocks during periods of high investor sentiment are more likely to have noise, while during low investor sentiment periods stocks are more likely to trade close to their fundamental values. …
Exploring The Questionable Academic Practice Of Conference Paper Double Dipping, Krista B. Lewellyn, William Q. Judge, Adam Smith
Exploring The Questionable Academic Practice Of Conference Paper Double Dipping, Krista B. Lewellyn, William Q. Judge, Adam Smith
Management Faculty Publications
We develop a conceptual framework and provide empirical evidence that helps to explain why management scholars submit the same paper to more than one scholarly conference, a practice referred to as "double dipping." Drawing from general strain theory,we find that certain features of the social and national institutional context in which these scholars are embedded provides motivation for and facilitates rationalization of engagement in the double-dipping practice. Specifically, our results show that the incidence of conference paper double dipping is greater for junior scholars and for those currently affiliated with research-intensive universities. We also find that authors who received their …

OBJECTIVES: Although JCAHO requires a standardised approach to handoffs, and while many standardised protocols have been tested, sign-out practices continue to vary. We believe this is due to the variability in workflow during inpatient duty cycle. We investigate the impact of such workflows on intern sign-out practices.
DESIGN: We employed a prospective, grounded theory mixed-method design.
SETTING: The study was conducted at a residency programme in the mid-Atlantic USA. Two observers randomly evaluated three types of daily sign-outs for 1 week every 3 months from September 2013 to March 2014. The compliance of each observed behaviour to JCAHO's Handoff Communication …

Supervisor And Subordinate Perceptions Of Leader-Member Exchange: Examining Idiosyncratic Deals And Work-Family Experiences In A Moderated Mediation Model, Michael L. Litano
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The extant literature recognizes that subordinates in high-quality leader-member exchange (LMX) relationships experience the most favorable outcomes (Dulebohn, Bommer, Liden, Brouer, & Ferris, 2012). In exchange for their unwavering commitment and superior job performance, high LMX subordinates benefit from greater access to valuable resources (e.g., communication, support, and negotiating latitude; Gerstner & Day, 1997), which can then be used to combat job demands and facilitate accomplishment of the subordinates’ salient goals (Agarwal, Datta, Blake-Beard, & Bhargava, 2012; Hobfoll, 2001). Meta-analytic evidence suggests that LMX also has critical implications for work-family outcomes (Litano, Major, Streets, Landers, & Bass, 2016), however, the …

Two Essays On The Antecedents And Effects Of Internationalizing Out Of Emerging And Developed Economies, Mark Robert Mallon
Management Theses & Dissertations
Comparative international entrepreneurship is a field still in its infancy. One of the largest needs in this stream of research is an understanding of how internationalization activities differ across countries, especially growing emerging markets. These two essays compare the antecedents and effects of internationalizing out of emerging and developed economies.
Essay 1 employs fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analyses to investigate how distinct configurations of national business systems interact with founders’ human capital to lead to high degrees of new venture internationalization. Findings indicate that new venture internationalization is an equifinal process that differs significantly across emerging and developed markets, with firms …

This is a relatively unexplored concept in the defined context and has been developed by the researcher. Perceived productivity was measured using an instrument developed in this research to gauge respondents’ perception of their productivity. The instrument, named the General Measure of Perceived Productivity (GMPP), was developed …
Role Of Requirements Engineering In Software Project’S Success, Sujatha Alla
Role Of Requirements Engineering In Software Project’S Success, Sujatha Alla
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Despite considerable time and resources spent on the initiation phase of software projects, discrepancies often exist between formal project documentation, customer requirements, and final project specifications. Such discrepancies in the requirements management process can have a very negative impact on final project outcomes. A Business Requirements Document (BRD) constitutes the formal software requirements documentation, which typically includes stakeholders’ needs and expectations and project scope while providing a clear project roadmap and project plan. According to IEEE standards, a BRD should be a structured document that includes specific elements such as functional and technical requirements while incorporating certain traits such as …
