New Age Visitors And The Tourism Industry, Peter Wiltshier
New Age Visitors And The Tourism Industry, Peter Wiltshier
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
This conceptual paper establishes a framework for socially constructed research activity to help gauge the intention of travellers in more-developed countries (MDC) of the wealthy and largely affluent North to undertake forms of continuing personal and professional development (CPD) through their travel experiences. Human physiological needs have in large already been achieved for many in more developed countries and exceeded in terms of nourishment and entertainment. Humans are social and societal creatures and in need of realisation of their spiritual, intellectual and societal choices and selections. New spiritual values are threatened by monetarism, by an ‘enveloping outside world’, as Giddens …
Transformative Potential Of A Short-Term Mission Trip Experience, Patrick J. Holladay
Transformative Potential Of A Short-Term Mission Trip Experience, Patrick J. Holladay
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
With the United Nations World Tourism Organization forecasting 2 billion international tourists by the 2030 there is something to consider. A volume of travel to such a scale means an opportunity to harness the tourism industry to bring people closer to Jesus. This exploratory paper begins an exploration of Christians travel experiences and transformative impacts of those experiences through interactions with other Christians. Using data from a group text messages and a personal journal, this paper presents how one specific trip type - short-term mission - influences the ‘exchanged life’ first posited by the missionary Hudson Taylor in the 1800s. …
The Rise And Fall (And Rise And Fall) Of The Olympic Games As An Economic Driver, Victor Matheson
The Rise And Fall (And Rise And Fall) Of The Olympic Games As An Economic Driver, Victor Matheson
Economics Department Working Papers
This paper traces the economic history of major sporting events focusing on the Olympics. Historically, the Olympic Games as well as other major sporting events have been considered costly events that place a burden on host cities. Only in relatively recent years, coinciding with the massive increases in the cost of hosting these events, have event organizers begun to claim that these events bring with them large economic benefits.
Point/Counterpoint: Is There A Case For Subsidizing Sports Stadiums?, Victor Matheson
Point/Counterpoint: Is There A Case For Subsidizing Sports Stadiums?, Victor Matheson
Economics Department Working Papers
In recent decades, governments have committed enormous public resources to subsidize construction of new stadiums, and the dollar value of taxpayer contributions for these subsidies continues to climb. Spending of taxpayer dollars includes both direct subsidies from state and local governments, as well as indirect subsidies from the use of tax-exempt bonds to finance construction. In granting stadium subsidies, governments claim that the stadiums are a public good that attracts tourists and businesses, thereby generating increased spending and job creation—benefits that flow to the community rather than to team owners. But do such benefits exist, and are they large enough …

Open Skies Agreement Between Brazil And The United States: Regulations, Alliances, Economic Impacts And A General Long Term Projection, Diego Alvim, Jose Simi, Mathias Gitahy, Rebecca Meadows
Graduate Student Works
This research has been developed based on the new United States and Brazil open skies agreement signed in 2018 with the goal to analyze regulations, alliances, economic impacts and a general long term projection. As a result, the model proposed indicates 14 potential new routes, 6 coming from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and 8 from other cities. The new routes create a new axis of air transport, with new direct flights programmed for the northeast, center-west and south regions. These new weekly frequencies allow an increase of 151 weekly frequencies between the two countries, going from the current …

Ninth Island, Las Vegas: Hawaiian Gaming Tourism And The California Hotel, Cynthia Van Gilder, Dana Herrera
Occasional Papers
Many people do not realize that Las Vegas, Nevada is home to a unique niche tourism: it is overwhelmingly the vacation destination of choice for residents of the state of Hawai’i, even affectionately termed the “Ninth Island.” Many credit the strong Hawaiian interest in Las Vegas to the fact that there is no legal gaming in the state of Hawai’i, however, data indicates that it is not just the opportunity to gamble that bring Hawaiian tourists here, but also the specifc amenities and experience offered at one particular hotel and casino, The California Hotel. Nicknamed “The Cal,” this establishment is …

”I Thought You Were One Of Those Modern Girls From Mumbai”: Gender, Reflexivity, And Encounters Of Indian-Ness In The Field, Pamila Gupta
Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice
This paper is a reflection on my experiences of doing fieldwork in Goa, India (1999-2000) from my position as a „halfie‟ anthropologist, born in India, and raised and educated in the United States. I discuss three „significant fieldwork events‟ that shaped how I was perceived by „others‟(locals and tourists) in the field in order to both illuminate and complicate the gendered, racialized, and diasporic postcolonial politics of conducting anthropological research on the topics of tourism and religion. Further, I pose these encounters as dilemmas, not to be resolved but rather to be explored as impacting and complicating the fieldwork process …
Western Travellers In The Land Of The Buddha Legitimising Travel Through The Religionification Of Tourism, François Thibeault
Western Travellers In The Land Of The Buddha Legitimising Travel Through The Religionification Of Tourism, François Thibeault
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
On the one hand, tourism has developed to such a point that it now shapes other social realities in global society. On the other hand, pilgrimage phenomena are thriving in the twenty-first century, as they become both more globalised and more particularised. This paper shows that drawing oppositions between pilgrimage and tourism assumes an exclusive, dichotomous view that is misleading. Instead, I insist on an understanding of the reciprocal influence between religion and tourism in which neither of the two spheres subjects itself to the other. The argument is based on the understandings and discourses of legitimation that Westerners travelling …
When Sacred Space Becomes A Heritage Place: Pilgrimage, Worship, And Tourism In Contemporary China, R J. Shepherd
When Sacred Space Becomes A Heritage Place: Pilgrimage, Worship, And Tourism In Contemporary China, R J. Shepherd
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
When promoted at sites that have traditionally been religious in character, heritage tourism evokes questions of intentionality, commodification, and authenticity. In particular, tourism at such sites is alleged to flatten out local practices, cause social problems, and commercialise the sacred. In short, local cultural practices are presumed to be transformed for the worse by tourism, a presumption which implies the existence of pristine pre-tourist cultures which can serve as baseline tools for measuring the impact of this touristic degradation. In this paper I address these concerns by examining tourism at a particular Chinese religious site, recently designated as a national …
Pilgrimage-Tourism: Common Themes In Different Religions, Noga Collins-Kreiner
Pilgrimage-Tourism: Common Themes In Different Religions, Noga Collins-Kreiner
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The paper discusses common themes in different religions regarding pilgrimage-tourism and has four main goals. First, it shows that the boundaries between pilgrimage and tourism have become blurred. Second, it characterises the different changes that have taken place in pilgrimage research in recent years. Third, it re-examines three different pilgrimage case-studies in an effort to draw conclusions pertaining to the ‘pilgrimagetourism nexus’; and fourth, it highlights discrepancies between the ‘old’ paradigm, predicated on the assumption that religious elements lie at the core of pilgrimage, and the results of more recent research on secular models of travel, highlighting alternative and complementary …

Buying Time: Consuming Urban Pasts In Nineteenth-Century Britain, Dory Agazarian
Buying Time: Consuming Urban Pasts In Nineteenth-Century Britain, Dory Agazarian
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is about how historical narratives developed in the context of a modern marketplace in nineteenth-century Britain. In particular, it explores British historicism through urban space with a focus on Rome and London. Both cities were invested with complex political, religious and cultural meanings central to the British imagination. These were favorite tourist destinations and the subjects of popular and professional history writing. Both cities operated as palimpsests, offering a variety of histories to be “tried on” across the span of time. In Rome, British consumers struggled when traditional histories were problematized by emerging scholarship and archaeology. In London, …
Exploring The Role Of Irish Local Authorities In Tourism Development: A Senior Management Perspective On Tourism Development In Cork County Council, Monica Moisuc
Masters
In an Irish context, the government's engagement in tourism and its role in developing the sector is acknowledged across most Irish government publications. However, despite efforts made to highlight the major role of the government in tourism, the number of studies that seek to understand how Irish local governments are engaging in tourism is limited. In an attempt to fill this knowledge gap, this study brings a new contribution to the current relevant literature by exploring the role of the government in developing tourism within a local Irish context.
Using a qualitative case-study approach, the particular entity under investigation is …

El Impacto De La Industria Turística En La Población Nativa Del Archipiélago De San Andrés, Providencia Y Santa Catalina: De La Declaración Del Puerto Libre Al Plan De Desarrollo “Living Islands For All”, Daniela Estefany Ramos Joaqui, Angie Johana Pardo Verdugo
Negocios y Relaciones Internacionales
Strategies To Maintain Adequate Hotel Water Supplies, Deborah R. Popely
Strategies To Maintain Adequate Hotel Water Supplies, Deborah R. Popely
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hotel guests can use 2 to 3 times more water than community residents. Hotels are water-intensive businesses, and water scarcity presents a pressing problem for managers who rely on an uninterrupted supply of water to meet guests' needs and maintain profitability. Using the resource-based view (RBV) as a conceptual framework, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies that hotel managers used to successfully maintain adequate water supplies in the Spanish Canary Islands, an historically arid site and a tourism destination. Data were collected from semistructured interviews and hotel water usage reports. Yin's 5-step approach of …

Successful Strategies To Sustain Profits From Tourism Following A Hurricane, Kevin C. James
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hurricanes have caused billions of dollars in damage to the hotel industry in Florida, significantly affecting tourism flow. The unpredictable impact of hurricanes makes sustaining profits challenging. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies that hotel leaders use to sustain tourism profits following a hurricane. The theory of image restoration provided the conceptual framework for the study. Data were collected from company documents and semistructured interviews with 5 hotel leaders in Central Florida. Transcribed data were coded then validated using member checking during the data analysis, which revealed 5 themes: storm impact, accommodations, operations, communications, and …

ICHRIE Research Reports
Recently, diverse accommodation choices such as clubs have become an extremely important topic for hotel guests, imposing an unprecedented challenge to hoteliers. Examples of other accommodation choices are clubs, karaoke bars, casinos and saunas. It is well-known that tourists’ accommodation choice is an important issue for destinations. The present study thus tried to understand the tourists’ characteristics such as demographics, geographic region, psychographic factors, and behavioral patterns, among different accommodation choice, and provided managerial implications for hotel and tourism practitioners. Since Macau is an entertainment-oriented tourist destination with a variety of accommodation choices, findings are expected to help hotels in …

Preferences Of Lgbt Tourists Traveling To Smaller Cities, Eric D. Olson, Ching-Hui Su, Chin-Hsun Tsai
ICHRIE Research Reports
The global lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population accounts for about 450 million people, with $3.7 trillion spending power per year2. With the rise of the “pink economy,” LGBT tourism destinations and suppliers have found ways to attract the LGBT tourist through increased target marketing, unique product offerings, and a welcoming environment. Most marketing campaigns targeting LGBT tourists have focused on acquiring LGBT tourists to larger cities with established LGBT communities. Thus, this study discusses the tourism preferences of LGBT tourists traveling to a smaller, regional city. LGBT consumers form their own unique subcultures, and consumption activities reflect their …
