A Community Of Practice For Chinese Ngos, Reza Hasmath, Jennifer Yj Hsu
A Community Of Practice For Chinese Ngos, Reza Hasmath, Jennifer Yj Hsu
Reza Hasmath
A community of practice represents an important resource for the sharing of sector-specific knowledge. It is a mechanism for Chinese NGOs to learn from each other, and collaborate. Drawing upon original data elicited from over 100 NGOs, this article examines the organizational capacity for Chinese NGOs to cultivate a mature community of practice. We find that there are inherent headwinds that Chinese NGOs will have to navigate to accomplish this goal. On the one hand, the majority of NGOs in our sample do not see themselves as part of a community of experts, which presents a huge challenge for the …

What Could Tourism Do To A Small Fishing Village: A Case Study Of The City Of Weihai, China, Babu P. George
Babu George
Weihai City, located on the east end of Shandong Peninsula in Northeastern China was once a small and remote fishing village. In recent years Weihai City has become one of the most popular tourism destinations in China. The tremendous development of tourism has had a significant impact on Weihai’s economy, physical environment, and culture. Weihai is now famous for the beautiful coastal scenery, high quality leisure living, and a strong Korean and increasingly Russian influence. This study examines the perception of Weihai residents on the position of Weihai as a tourist destination and also their vision of Weihai’s future tourism …

The Changing Nature Of Labor Unrest In China, Manfred Elfstrom, Sarosh Kuruvilla
Sarosh Kuruvilla
A qualitative shift is underway in the nature of labor protest in China. Contrary to prior literature that characterized strikes as being largely defensive in nature, the authors suggest that since 2008, Chinese workers have been striking offensively for more money, better working conditions, and more respect from employers. They explain these developments using a “political process” model that suggests economic and political opportunities are sending “cognitive cues” to workers that they have increased leverage, leading them to be more assertive in their demands. Such cues include a growing labor shortage, new labor laws, and new media openness. Their argument …

Covered Interest Rate Parity: The Usd And Cny, Kimberly D. Scott

One of many tests of international finance is a test termed Covered Interest Rate Parity (CIRP). This theorem posits that exchange rate forward premiums (discounts) are offset by the respective interest rate differential between two currencies (Bhargava, Dania, & Malhotra, 2011). To briefly describe another theorem of interest rate parity is the Uncovered Interest Rate Parity (UIRP). This theorem posits that a return on an uncovered foreign currency deposit should be equal to the return on a similar domestic deposit despite the national market the foreign deposit is located.
A Historical Reading Of China’S Foreign Exchange Reform And 1993 Currency Devaluation, Era Qian
A Historical Reading Of China’S Foreign Exchange Reform And 1993 Currency Devaluation, Era Qian
McDonough Research Journal
This paper aims at assessing China’s foreign exchange reform and analyzing the driving factors behind its 1993 currency devaluation. It focuses on the sequencing of reforming efforts and clarifies the different concepts of currency convertibility. It also discussed the special circumstances that led to reform at the time. Our research results suggest that China’s economic progress and policy orientation had drawn a clear roadmap for its reforming effort. Meanwhile, its existing swap center network, export subsidy elimination process, domestic inflation and entry to GATT made 1993 a critical timing to unite its dual exchange rate. China’s need for capital inflow …
Chinese Approach To Exchange Rates And Impact On Trade, Kimberly D. Scott
Chinese Approach To Exchange Rates And Impact On Trade, Kimberly D. Scott
Kimberly D Scott
The United States and China have embarked on considerable deliberation in the United States trade and the value of the Chinese currency among academics and politicians alike. Over the years, research on the two topics has consistently addressed the subject by investigating the equilibrium real exchange rate between the yuan (CNY) and the dollar (USD), with results exposing the undervaluation in the yuan since the 1990’s.
Successful Operating Strategies In The Performance Of U.S.-China Joint Ventures, Gregory E. Osland
Successful Operating Strategies In The Performance Of U.S.-China Joint Ventures, Gregory E. Osland
Gregory E. Osland
Evaluations of the performance of international joint ventures (IJVs) in China have produced mixed conclusions. This study sought to uncover performance criteria used by various groups of managers and to identify critical factors in IJV performance in China. Using in-depth case studies, matched data were collected from personal interviews with managers from Chinese and U.S. parent companies, joint venture operating managers from both partners, and government officials from both countries. The performance criteria used by joint venture participants appear to be converging, with profitability emerging as the dominant element. This exploratory study uncovered four important strategic factors in the performance …
Cny & Usd: Foreign Exchange Rates, Kimberly D. Scott
Cny & Usd: Foreign Exchange Rates, Kimberly D. Scott
Kimberly D Scott
A forward rate is related to a spot rate that is set to take place in the future (Bekaert & Hodrick, 2012). Interestingly, one issue that can be challenging when performing transactions is not knowing what the rate will yield in the future versus at present. Due to market pressures or even policy decisions, either a devaluation or revaluation of domestic currency to foreign currencies can transpire.
Chinese Yuan And The American Dollar, Kimberly D. Scott
Chinese Yuan And The American Dollar, Kimberly D. Scott
Kimberly D Scott
The economic relationship between China and the United States has been a hit and miss discussion over the years. One question, in particular, has stimulated more than speculation, but empirical research of whether we know that China's currency is undervalued is certainly a trigger to perform further research.

Experimentation And Decentralization In China’S Labor Relations, Eli D. Friedman, Sarosh Kuruvilla
Experimentation And Decentralization In China’S Labor Relations, Eli D. Friedman, Sarosh Kuruvilla
Sarosh Kuruvilla
In this introduction to the special issue ‘Changing work, labour and employment relations in China’, we argue that China is taking an experimental and decentralized approach to the development of new labor relations frameworks. Particular political constraints in China prevent interest aggregation among workers, as the central state sees this as posing a risk to social stability. Firms and local governments have been given a degree of space to experiment with different arrangements, as long as the categorical ban on independent unions is not violated. The consequence has been an increasingly differentiated labor relations landscape, with significant variation by region …

Cultural Implications Of Customer Satisfaction Differences Of Help Desks In The Us And China, William H. Bleuel, Terry Young, Wayne Gertmenian
William H. Bleuel
Customer satisfaction has become a very important aspect of business management in the high technology market. Companies that provide products and services world-wide often are concerned that customer satisfaction may be impacted by cultural differences. This study examines measures of customer satisfaction in two areas (China and the United States) to determine whether or not there is a difference in satisfaction scores provided by Help Desks. The trend in overall satisfaction over the seven year period from 2005 through 2011 is increasing in China faster than in the United States. Correlations between variously measured parameters of Help Desks and overall …

Getting Through The Hard Times Together? Chinese Workers And Unions Respond To The Economic Crisis, Eli D. Friedman
Getting Through The Hard Times Together? Chinese Workers And Unions Respond To The Economic Crisis, Eli D. Friedman
Eli D Friedman
How do post-socialist unions respond to market crisis? And what are the implications of this response for labor representation? Drawing on literature on post-socialist labor and union democracy, I argue that economic crisis affects not just labor – capital and labor – state relations, but also the relationship between union representatives and workers. Such a dynamic is highlighted by an empirical account of the divergent activities of workers and All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) unions in China following the economic crisis of 2008. While the union responded to mass unemployment with an administrative and policy-oriented strategy, workers took to …
Insurgency And Institutionalization: The Polanyian Countermovement And Chinese Labor Politics, Eli D. Friedman
Insurgency And Institutionalization: The Polanyian Countermovement And Chinese Labor Politics, Eli D. Friedman
Eli D Friedman
Why is it that in the nearly 10 years since the Chinese central government began making symbolic and material moves towards class compromise that labor unrest has expanded greatly? In this article I reconfigure Karl Polanyi's theory of the countermovement to account for recent developments in Chinese labor politics. Specifically, I argue that countermovements must be broken down into two constituent but intertwined "moments": the insurgent moment that consists of spontaneous resistance to the market, and the institutional moment, when class compromise is established in the economic and political spheres. In China, the transition from insurgency to institutionalization has thus …

Disproportionate Ownership Structure And Ipo Long-Run Performance Of Non-Soes In China, Xiaoming Wang, Jerry Cao, Qigui Liu, Jinghua Tang, Gary Tian

This paper examines the relationship between ownership structures and IPO long-run performance of non-SOEs in China. Although non-SOEs underperform the market in general after IPO but the poor performance is mainly caused by the IPOs with ownership control wedge. Non-SOEs with one share one vote structure outperform those with control-ownership wedge by 30% for three years post-IPO performance in adjusted buy-and-hold returns. Non-SOEs with control-ownership wedge have higher frequency of undertaking value-destroying related party transactions. These findings suggest that non-SOEs need to improve corporate governance such as disproportionate ownership structure to better safeguard the interest of long-run shareholders.
Does Banks' Dual Holding Affect Bank Lending And Firms' Investment Decisions? Evidence From China, Xiaofei Pan, Gary Tian
Does Banks' Dual Holding Affect Bank Lending And Firms' Investment Decisions? Evidence From China, Xiaofei Pan, Gary Tian
Gary Tian
This study investigates the effect of banks' dual holding on bank lending and firms' investment decisions using a sample of listed firms in China. We find that dual holding leads to easier access to bank loans, a result that is more pronounced for non-state-owned enterprises (non-SOEs) than SOEs. We also find that dual holding distorts banks' lending decisions and harms the investment efficiency for SOEs, while resulting in optimal lending decisions and enhanced investment efficiency for non-SOEs. For non-SOEs, further analysis suggests that optimal lending decisions and efficient investment can be achieved for firms with higher ownership concentration, and firms …

Technology Transfer Into China: Preparing For A New Era, Arnoud De Meyer
Technology Transfer Into China: Preparing For A New Era, Arnoud De Meyer
Arnoud DE MEYER
Currently, there are three forces creating a more favourable background for western multinational companies to do new business in China by transferring new technology. First, growing overcapacity means China requires not traditional turnkey factories, but instead, technology which leads to innovation and improvement. Second, a changing attitude by all levels of Chinese government to demanding state-of-the-art technology including software instead of previous generation technology, and to technology management and commercial implementation more. Third, intellectual property rights are becoming better respected. The author makes suggestions to best manage technology transfer into China, with this changed background. Based on six case studies …

Technology Strategy And China's Technology Capacity Building, Arnoud De Meyer
Arnoud DE MEYER
China has the potential to become a major source of innovation for the world. The scientific investment is in place and rapidly growing. But in order to reap the benefits of this investment its organisations will have to become better at managing innovation. One of the key elements of innovation management is the determination and implementation of a sound technology strategy. The purpose of this paper is to offer a framework and a detailed overview of what it entails to develop and implement a technology strategy. The paper emphasizes the alignment of the strategy with the organisational competencies and the …

Refocusing The Lens: Singapore's Private Enterprises In China, Caroline Yeoh, Wilfred Pow Ngee How, Ye Zhang

In recent years, financial and political instabilities have cooled economic growth in many regions. Even in this context, however, areas of strong growth remain; none, arguably, more prominent than ever-developing and increasingly affluent China, which is today a vastly different environment than even several years ago. More than ever, a wealth of opportunity subsists in this ancient land – and businesses must be able to adapt and seize these opportunities. Thus we turn towards Singapore private enterprise in China, to study once more the efficacy of the city-state's internationalization strategies in the context of the private enterprises which must eventually …

Does Bank Ownership Imply Efficient Monitoring? Evidence From Bank Lending And Firm Investment Efficiencies In China, Gary G. Tian, Xiaofei Pan
Gary Tian
This study investigates the effect of bank ownership on lending and firm investment efficiencies to give reasons for the mixed evidence that exists on the impact of bank ownership on firm performance. Using China's listed firms as an example, we find that bank ownership reduces the efficiency of bank lending and harms investment efficiency for state-owned enterprises (SOEs), while simultaneously relating to optimal lending decisions and enhanced investment efficiency for non-SOEs. Our findings suggest that banks monitor non-SOEs effectively, but are less effective at monitoring SOEs. We document that banks' ex post monitoring on non-SOEs' investment policy results from their …
Bank Connection, Corruption And Collateral In China, Xiaofei Pan, Gary Tian
Bank Connection, Corruption And Collateral In China, Xiaofei Pan, Gary Tian
Gary Tian
Using a sample of China's listed entrepreneurial firms, we investigate the relationship between bank connection, corruption and collateral requirements. We find that when a firm is connected with banks, collateral requirements are significantly lower. We also find that bank connection is the channel through which corruption is exercised to benefit those firms with favoured loan terms. Our analysis further reveals that bank connection and corruption have jointly improved bank lending efficiency. However, these positive effects become weaker with government intervention in the form of an economic stimulus package. We argue that in an emerging market, bank connection facilitates rent seeking …
