Economic Inequality And Burden-Sharing In The Provision Of Local Environmental Quality, Juan Camilo Cardenas, John K. Stranlund, Cleve Willis Dec 2001

Economic Inequality And Burden-Sharing In The Provision Of Local Environmental Quality, Juan Camilo Cardenas, John K. Stranlund, Cleve Willis

John K. Stranlund

A large, but inconclusive, literature addresses how economic heterogeneity affects the use of local resources and local environmental quality. One line of thought, which derives from Nash equilibrium provision of public goods, suggests that in contexts in which individual actions degrade local environmental quality, wealthier people in a community will tend to do more to protect environmental quality. In this paper we report on experiments performed in rural Colombia that were designed to explore the role that economic inequality plays in the ‘provision’ of local environmental quality. Subjects were asked to decide how much time to devote to collecting firewood …

Trends In The Market For Entrepreneurship Faculty, 1989-1998, Todd A. Finkle, David L. Deeds

Todd A Finkle

The last decade has seen a dramatic rise in the number and status of entrepreneurship programs in schools of business and management. The popularity of entrepreneurship courses has increased dramatically among both graduate and undergraduate students. Alumni and external constituencies of schools of business have generally been supportive of the development of entrepreneurship programs, and in fact in many instances it has been the demands of these constituencies that have led to the creation or expansion of entrepreneurship programs within these schools. The growth in entrepreneurship programs has been fostered by an increase in the popularity of entrepreneurship, an increase …

Policy brief from Community Resources For Justice

Ask anyone on the street about it and you are liable to be drawn into a lengthy conversation about, the troublesome state of housing in Urban America – high prices, low availability, and, seemingly, no relief in sight. Whether you are a student or senior citizen, construction worker or downtown professional, the search for housing in an urban center is a difficult but necessary experience.

In Whom We Trust: Group Membership As An Affective Context For Trust Development, Michele Williams Jun 2001

In Whom We Trust: Group Membership As An Affective Context For Trust Development, Michele Williams

Michele Williams

Examining the ways in which affect impacts the trust that develops between members of dissimilar groups broadens the study of trust development. People's perceptions of their own interdependence with other groups influence both their beliefs about group members' trustworthiness and their affect for group members. I propose that this affect, in turn, influences interpersonal trust development through multiple paths: cognitive, motivational, and behavioral. Using literature on social information processing, emotion, and intergroup behavior, I elucidate the social and affective context of trust development.

Uniform Pricing Or Pay-As-Bid Pricing: A Dilemma For California And Beyond, Peter Cramton, Alfred E. Kahn, Robert H. Porter, Richard D. Tabors Jun 2001

Uniform Pricing Or Pay-As-Bid Pricing: A Dilemma For California And Beyond, Peter Cramton, Alfred E. Kahn, Robert H. Porter, Richard D. Tabors

Peter Cramton

Any belief that a shift from uniform to as-bid pricing would provide power purchasers substantial relief from soaring prices is simply mistaken. The immediate consequence of its introduction would be a radical change in bidding behavior that would introduce new inefficiencies, weaken competition in new generation, and impede expansion of capacity.

Entwicklungsstand Und -Perspektiven Des Managements Dokumentierten Wissens Bei Grossen Beratungsunternehmen, Dieter Blessing, Gerold Riempp, Hubert Oesterle

Hubert Oesterle

Bargaining With Incomplete Information, Peter Cramton, Lawrence M. Ausubel, Raymond J. Deneckere Mar 2001

Bargaining With Incomplete Information, Peter Cramton, Lawrence M. Ausubel, Raymond J. Deneckere

Peter Cramton

A central question in economics is understanding the difficulties that parties have in reaching mutually beneficial agreements. Informational differences provide an appealing explanation for bargaining inefficiencies. This chapter provides an overview of the theoretical and empirical literature on bargaining with incomplete information. The chapter begins with an analysis of bargaining within a mechanism design framework. A modern development is provided of the classic result that, given two parties with independent private valuations, ex post efficiency is attainable if and only if it is common knowledge that gains from trade exist. The classic problems of efficient trade with one-sided incomplete information …

The Optimality Of Being Efficient, Peter Cramton, Lawrence M. Ausubel Mar 2001

The Optimality Of Being Efficient, Peter Cramton, Lawrence M. Ausubel

Peter Cramton

In an optimal auction, a revenue-optimizing seller often awards goods inefficiently, either by placing them in the wrong hands or by withholding goods from the market. This conclusion rests on two assumptions: (1) the seller can prevent resale among bidders after the auction; and (2) the seller can commit to not sell the withheld goods after the auction. We examine how the optimal auction problem changes when these assumptions are relaxed. In sharp contrast to the no resale assumption, we assume perfect resale: all gains from trade are exhausted in resale. In a multiple object model with independent signals, we …
