Making Use Of Difference: Diversity, Debate, And Decision Comprehensiveness In Top Management Teams, Tony L. Simons, Lisa Hope Pelled, Ken A. Smith
Tony L. Simons
This study examined how top management team diversity variables and debate interacted to influence two measures of company financial performance. Further, it assessed the degree to which decision comprehensiveness mediated those interaction effects. Multi-informant data from the top management teams of 57 manufacturing companies revealed that more job-related types of diversity interacted with debate to influence financial performance, but a less job-related type (age diversity) did not. Decision comprehensiveness partially mediated those effects.
The Social Uses Of Advertising, Mark Ritson, Richard Elliott
The Social Uses Of Advertising, Mark Ritson, Richard Elliott
Mark Ritson
Advertising research has focused exclusively on the solitary subject at the expense of understanding the role that advertising plays within the social contexts of group interaction. We develop a number of explanations for this omission before describing the results of an ethnographic study of advertising's contribution to the everyday interactions of adolescent informants at a number of English high schools. The study reveals a series of new, socially related advertising-audience behaviors. Specifically, advertising meanings are shown to possess social uses relating to textual experience, interpretation, evaluation, ritual use, and metaphor. The theoretical and managerial implications of these social uses are …

Review Of The Reserves And Operable Capability Markets: New England's Experience In The First Four Months, Peter Cramton
Review Of The Reserves And Operable Capability Markets: New England's Experience In The First Four Months, Peter Cramton
Peter Cramton
I review the performance of the operating reserves and the operable capability markets in New England. The review covers the first four months of operation from May 1 to August 31, 1999. The review is based on my knowledge of the market rules and their implementation by the ISO, and the market data during this period, including bidding, operating, and settlement information. In the review, I (1) identify the potential market flaws with these markets, (2) look at the performance of the markets to see if the potential problems have materialized, (3) evaluate the ISO's short-term remedies for these market …

An Investigation Of Environmental Management Systems Motivations And Firm Performance, Robert Sroufe, Steven A. Melnyk, Frank L. Montabon, Roger Calantone
Frank L. Montabon
There are many of issues associated with Environmental Management Systems (EMS). One attempt to overcome these issues can be found in the development of IS0 14000. In this paper, a hypothesized model of the motivations influencing the decision to seek IS0 14000 certification and the relationship to firm performance is examined. The hypothesized model is tested through the use of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results identify positive relationships between uncertainty and the motivations to seek EMS certification. A positive relationship is shown between the status of a firm’s EMS, the environmental options a firm will explore. Finally, a positive …

Iso 14000: Assessing Its Perceived Impact On Corporate Performance, Frank L. Montabon, Steven A. Melnyk, Robert Sroufe, Roger J. Calantone
Frank L. Montabon
The IS0 14000 environmental standard is a relatively recent development in Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing (ERM). It applies to environmental systems and processes the same approach used by its predecessor, the IS0 9000 quality standards. Being relatively new, there are numerous questions regarding the impact of this new standard both on the corporate environmental management system and corporate performance. This paper addresses some of these questions, by drawing on data generated by a large-scale survey of American managers. The results indicate that, even though IS0 14000 has achieved relatively limited acceptance, there is strong evidence to indicate that this standard can …

Investigating The Linkage Between Total Quality Management And Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing, Sime Curkovic, Steve Melnyk, Rob Handfield, Frank L. Montabon, Robert Sroufe
Frank L. Montabon
This paper explicitly examines the relationship that exists between Total Quality Management (TQM) and Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing (ERM) systems. It has been presumed in numerous past studies that such a relationship does exist. It has been argued that those firms that have successfuhy implemented a TQM system are better positioned to successfully implement an ERM system. This relationship, however, has not yet been statistically and empirically evaluated. In this study, the authors evaluate this relationship using a large-scale survey of plant managers as the data source and Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling as the statistical tools. The study …

Not All Customers Are Created Equal: Looking At Lifetime Value, Mark E. Pickering
Mark E Pickering
Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) refines customer profitability analysis to view customers as assets. Thinking in terms of CLV provides the impetus to target customer acquisition efforts on the right customers, and to improve the profitability and duration of the relationship with existing customers. This article introduces the concepts and benefits associated with CLV and actions to improve value.
Impacts Of Strike Replacement Banks In Canada, Peter Cramton, Morley Gunderson, Joseph Tracy
Impacts Of Strike Replacement Banks In Canada, Peter Cramton, Morley Gunderson, Joseph Tracy
Peter Cramton
In the labor relations area no issue generates as much controversy and division between labor and management as does the legislative ban on replacement workers. In the United States, the issue of a ban on permanent replacement workers has come before Congress four times since 1988, although the only action taken has been an executive order in 1995, banning the government from doing business with firms that use permanent replacements (Cramton and Tracy 1998). In Canada, where labor matters are under provincial jurisdiction, legislative bans on permanent replacement workers exist in most jurisdictions (except New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince …
The Effect Of Collective Bargaining Legislation On Strikes And Wages, Peter Cramton, Morley Gunderson, Joseph Tracy
The Effect Of Collective Bargaining Legislation On Strikes And Wages, Peter Cramton, Morley Gunderson, Joseph Tracy
Peter Cramton
Using Canadian data on large, private-sector contract negotiations from January 1967 to March 1993, we find that wages and strikes are substantially influenced by labor policy. The data indicate that conciliation policies have largely been ineffective in reducing strike costs. In contrast, contract reopener provisions appear to make both unions and firms better off by reducing negotiation costs without systematically affecting wage settlements. Legislation banning the use of replacement workers appears to lead to higher strike costs both by increasing the frequency and duration of strikes.

The Role Of The Iso In U.S. Electricity Markets: A Review Of Restructuring In California And Pjm, Peter Cramton, Lisa Cameron
The Role Of The Iso In U.S. Electricity Markets: A Review Of Restructuring In California And Pjm, Peter Cramton, Lisa Cameron
Peter Cramton
Several regions of the U.S. have sought to restructure the electric power industry by separating the potentially competitive generation sector from the natural monopoly functions of electricity transmission and distribution. Under this restructuring scheme, a central authority, which we will refer to as the independent system operator (ISO), is given control over both the transmission system and the spot market for electricity. The ISO's role in managing the spot market is relatively uncontroversial. This is because the spot market takes place in real time and requires continuous physical adjustments to electricity supply and demand subject to complex constraints, such as …

Mil-Std-188-125-2, High-Altitude Emp Protection For Transportable Systems
Mil-Std-188-125-2, High-Altitude Emp Protection For Transportable Systems
George H Baker
This standard establishes minimum requirements and design objectives for high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) hardening of transportable1 ground-based systems that perform critical, time-urgent command, control, communications, computer, and intelligence (C4I) missions. Systems required to fully comply with the provisions of the standard will be designated by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a Military Department Headquarters, or a Major Command.
The standard prescribes minimum performance requirements for low-risk protection from mission-aborting damage or upset due to HEMP threat environments. The standard also addresses minimum testing requirements for demonstrating that prescribed performance has been achieved and for verifying that the installed protection measures …

The Direct And Indirect Influences Of Human Values On Product Ownership., Michael W. Allen, Sik Hung Ng
The Direct And Indirect Influences Of Human Values On Product Ownership., Michael W. Allen, Sik Hung Ng
Michael Allen
The present study proposes a conceptual model of how consumers' choice of products may be influenced by the human values that they endorse. The model suggests that values can influence product choice directly or indirectly depending on the meaning of the product and the kind of judgement used to evaluate that meaning. Speci®cally, values would have a direct influence on product choice when consumers attend to a product's symbolic meaning and make an aective judgement, and have an indirect influence (via tangible attribute importance) when consumers attend to a product's utilitarian meaning and make a piecemeal judgement. To test the …
The Benefits Of Privatization: Evidence From Mexico, Florencio López De Silanes, Rafael La Porta
The Benefits Of Privatization: Evidence From Mexico, Florencio López De Silanes, Rafael La Porta
Florencio López de Silanes
Criticisms of privatization have centered around the possibility that the observed higher profitability of privatized companies comes at the expense of the rest of society. In this paper we focus on two of the most likely channels for social losses: (1) increased prices as firms capitalize on the market power; and (2) layoffs and lower wages as firms seek to roll back generous labor contracts. Using data for all 218 non-financial privatizations that took place in Mexico between 1983 and 1991 we find that privatized firms quickly bridge the pre-privatization performance gap with industry-matched control groups. For example, privatization is …

Corporate Ownership Around The World, Florencio López De Silanes, Rafael La Porta, Andrei Shleifer
Florencio López de Silanes
We present data on ownership structures of large corporations in 27 wealthy economies, making an effort to identify the ultimate controlling shareholders of these firms. We find that, except in economies with very good shareholder protection, relatively few of these firms are widely held, in contrast to the Berle and Means image of ownership of the modern corporation. Rather, these firms are typically controlled by families or the State. Equity control by financial institutions or other widely held corporations is far less common. The controlling shareholders typically have power over firms significantly in excess of their cash flow rights, primarily …

The Distributional Effects Of Carbon Regulation, Peter Cramton, Suzi Kerr
The Distributional Effects Of Carbon Regulation, Peter Cramton, Suzi Kerr
Peter Cramton
We examine the distributional effects of carbon regulation. An auction of carbon permits is the best way to achieve carbon caps set by international negotiation to limit global climate change. An auction is preferred to grandfathering (giving polluters permits in proportion to past pollution), because it allows reduced tax distortions, provides more flexibility in distribution of costs, provides greater incentives for innovation, and reduces the need for politically contentious arguments over the allocation of rents.
