Student Theses and Dissertations

The 2020 Covid-19 pandemic underscored the importance of vaccination in our governmental- health bodies. As a result, effective vaccine communication is more necessary than ever. Maxed Out: How The Pandemic Put The Fitness Industry’S Fate In The Hands Of Its Consumers, Denny Jacob

Capstones

The pandemic's impact on the fitness industry has gone deeper than closing gyms. It has completely reoriented how people workout, where they workout, how gyms will look and run and the new balance between brick-and-mortar gym locations and virtual fitness. The seismic shifts that have taken place over nearly two years have moved the industry to a place that it can't revert from. Everything that has changed since is here to stay in some capacity.

“The New Pinkertons”: Anti-Union Consultants And Surveillance Tech Thwart Organizing, Jo Constantz Dec 2021

“The New Pinkertons”: Anti-Union Consultants And Surveillance Tech Thwart Organizing, Jo Constantz

Capstones

In 2020, just 6.3% of U.S. private-sector workers were union members, despite the fact that 68% of Americans approve of labor unions, the highest since 1965, and nearly half of non-union workers say they would join.

After World War II, wage growth kept pace with GDP growth, but then began to diverge in the 1970s, according to a study by the RAND Corporation. After 1975, incomes of the bottom 90% rose more slowly than the economy as a whole, while incomes of the top 10% grew faster. The declining wage growth coincided with and is closely related to a drop-off …

Examining The Recovery Of The Mta In Nyc, Angel Adegbesan

Capstones

My capstone project involved writing codes to scrape and analyze data that isn’t readily available in the format we want. I scraped and analyzed turnstile data and metro card data from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority from the periods of Jan 01, 2021 to April 30, 2021 and Jan 01, 2022 to April 30, 2022. The purpose of the analysis is to determine how public transit ridership has changed in New York City and whether the MTA was on track to pre-pandemic levels. For my capstone, I wrote about my findings from the data analysis and did some interactive work to …

Onlyfans Is Booming. But For Whom?, Allison Smith Dec 2021

Onlyfans Is Booming. But For Whom?, Allison Smith

Capstones

Although the news often reports on the windfalls content creators make on OnlyFans, especially since the start of the pandemic, the reality is that most sex workers on the site undergo hours of unpaid later — from brand building and search engine optimization to video editing and production. Since the passage of SESTA/FOSTA in 2018, a bill that was ostensibly designed to curtail online sex trafficking, it has been harder to get started in the sex industry and the divide between those who are successful versus those who are just scraping by has widened. New York Is Promising Social Equity In Its Legal Cannabis Market, But Questions Still Loom, Brian D. Evans Jr

Capstones

This capstone will explore how New York can navigate a new landscape that accepts recreational marijuana while also dealing with an illegal pot market that can better serve the state with less arrests and a more seamless rollout. The capstone will also discuss how people of color – already targeted and arrested at a disproportionate rate for misdemeanor non-violent drug related crimes – will navigate this landscape. With less access to capital to start businesses of their own or buy/rent property, will New York perhaps introduce or entertain a program to subsidize such an effort? California has said that the …

Urban Library Journal

Students often assume that librarians sit with their noses stuck in dusty volumes all day. Publications and Research

The novel COVID-19 outbreak is a major public health challenge that quickly turned into an economic recession of great proportions. This pandemic poses a trade-off between health and the economy where social distancing, quarantines, and isolation shut down demand and supply chains across the USA. This paper analyzes the impact of COVID-19 on illness and death among older adults and communities of color with low socioeconomic status in New York City. To achieve this goal, fractional logit models are used to capture changes in the novel virus’ morbidity and mortality rates at the neighborhood level. Median income, race/ethnicity, age, household …

Contracting In Direct Asset Sales, Xin Yuan Jun 2021

Contracting In Direct Asset Sales, Xin Yuan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Using a unique, hand-collected dataset of direct asset sales agreements in the SEC filings, I provide the first large-sample evidence on how contracting mechanisms are used to mitigate information frictions in these important transactions. The conflict of interests is unique because the scarcity of asset-specific financial information makes target assets difficult to value and monitor, especially when such transactions are usually consummated in a short period. I first show an extensive use of representations and warranties, covenants, and special payment arrangements in these contracts when severe information asymmetry exists between buyers and sellers. Importantly, further results suggest that these contracting …

Cross-Sectional Variation Of Stock Options Behavior, Meng Tian Jun 2021

Cross-Sectional Variation Of Stock Options Behavior, Meng Tian

Chapter 1: The introduction discusses the motivation of this dissertation, interlinks and the main findings of the three chapters.

Chapter 2: The slope of the option implied volatility plot against the strike reflects the risk-neutral skewness of the underlying security's conditional return distribution. We identify two principal risk sources that contribute to the cross-sectional variation of individual stock options' implied volatility …

Strategic Default And Moral Hazard In Real Estate: Insights From Machine Learning Applications, Arka Prava Bandyopadhyay Jun 2021

Strategic Default And Moral Hazard In Real Estate: Insights From Machine Learning Applications, Arka Prava Bandyopadhyay

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Strategic default has been the achilles heel in academic finance for decades. By definition, whether a default has occurred due to strategic motive is unobservable. Moreover, a household has only so many avenues of conducting a strategic default. I use the context of commercial mortgages as property value as well property cashflow co-determine the default decision of these borrowers. I tease out the different strategic aspects of default from the ones emanating from liquidity constraints. The recent advances in Deep Neural Network (DNN), the advent of big data and the computational power associated with it has enabled me to disentangle …

Quid Pro Quo? The Sec Oversight Enforcement And Corporate Lobbying, Daeun Lee Jun 2021

Quid Pro Quo? The Sec Oversight Enforcement And Corporate Lobbying, Daeun Lee

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Due to the private nature of its internal investigations, research on the SEC oversight enforcement is limited. By distinguishing between enforcement staff’ decision to open an investigation (investigation decision) and commissioners’ authorization of an enforcement action (enforcement decision), this study is the first to examine how these two decisions interplay to overcome the political capture while fulfilling the SEC’s mission to protect investors. First, I do not find evidence that investigation decision is influenced by firms’ political connections, whereas enforcement decision is affected by firms’ lobbying efforts. Collectively, my results imply that there exists a misalignment …

Essays On Behavioral Finance And Household Finance, Chih-Ching Hung Jun 2021

Essays On Behavioral Finance And Household Finance, Chih-Ching Hung

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation consists of three chapters that span behavioral and household finance. Chapter 1 is the introduction. Chapter 2 to 4 are the main content. Lastly, chapter 5 concludes.

Chapter 2: I show that daily aggregate retail attention to firms (ARA) strongly and negatively predicts the one-week ahead market returns, whereas aggregate institutional attention (AIA) positively predicts market returns around scheduled major news announcements. Results are robust in out-of-sample tests and the effect of ARA is causal. The patterns are consistent with attention-induced retail buying which generates a transitory price pressure that quickly reverts and an increased institutional attention preceding …
