Nsfw: Not So Feminist Women - A Media And Cultural Studies Analysis Of Working Women In Popular Media, Josephine Schofield
Nsfw: Not So Feminist Women - A Media And Cultural Studies Analysis Of Working Women In Popular Media, Josephine Schofield
Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies
Even though gender diversity of characters has increased in television shows and films, this study hypothesized that female characters who are presented as feminist icons function as feminist backlash and perpetuate negative and harmful stereotypes. This was found to be especially true for career-focused women. Applying a cultural studies approach to reading television and film studies through a feminist lens identified the antifeminist factors that continue to cause the perpetual loop of independent women reverting to dated social roles. This research connects what audiences consume through popular media to how they perceive their female co-workers. The findings of this study …

Understanding Real Estate Market Dynamics: The Covid-19 Effect, Faith Winslow
Honors Projects in Finance
The covid-19 pandemic has led to significant shifts in consumer trends, including in the real estate market. Through multivariable regression, this study investigates how covid-19 has impacted the demand as well as pricing for houses in the United States. The findings contribute to the literature in a few major ways. First, they provide a current look at the impact of covid-19 on the housing market by analyzing monthly, state-level data from before and during the pandemic. Secondly, they provide clarity and supplement journals and research currently in the works. This is the first national study that looks at the effect …

The Tax Cuts And Jobs Act: The Fairest Of Them All?, Julia Sheehan
The Tax Cuts And Jobs Act: The Fairest Of Them All?, Julia Sheehan
Honors Projects in Accounting
This study explores how the tax law changes made through the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) had an impact on horizontal equity within the tax system. Through simulations of the “typical taxpayer,” or the median situated taxpayer and homeowner, homeownership tax benefits were computed using the TCJA law as well as the prior tax law. This was completed for both single and married filing joint taxpayers. The typical taxpayer’s benefits under each tax law were compared across various regions of the country to evaluate how horizontal equity had been changed. The simulations’ findings indicate that as a …

Examining Depreciation And Wealth Concentration Through Agent-Based Modeling, Armen Eghian
Examining Depreciation And Wealth Concentration Through Agent-Based Modeling, Armen Eghian
Honors Projects in Economics
Wealth concentration can be attributed to factors such as capital accumulation and income inequality. Overtime this can result in inequality in access to educational and healthcare and increase crime. Some researchers have studied patent law’s effect on wealth concentration, but its far reaching consequences leave many unknowns. My study shows a more active market of secondhand machinery reduces overall wealth concentration. This aligns with the research showing longer patent windows raise the cost of accumulating capital and reduce capital accumulation for unwealthy populations. Results from my simulation revealed a lower rate of depreciation allowed a strong secondhand capital market to …

Advertising In The Volunteer Tourism Industry: Analyzing The Relationship Between Social Exclusion And Self-Versus-Other Benefit Appeals., Lyndsay Swanston
Honors Projects in Marketing
This study aims to analyze how consumers perceive advertisements in the volunteer tourism industry when influenced by social exclusion and benefit appeals. The authors examined feelings, attitudes, and behavioral intentions of consumers in reference to an international volunteer trip advertisement. Based on data from a sample (n=259), findings demonstrated that consumers who felt more socially excluded responded more favorably to other-benefit appeals, opposed to self-benefit appeals. An interaction effect was discovered when looking at the degree of sympathy that participants felt regarding the advertisements. Participants who were socially excluded felt more sympathetic after viewing the other-benefit appeal advertisements, whereas those …
Environmental, Social, And Governance Performance Of Top-Rated Supply Chain Companies: A Quantitative Assessment Model, Noah Tellier
Environmental, Social, And Governance Performance Of Top-Rated Supply Chain Companies: A Quantitative Assessment Model, Noah Tellier
Honors Projects in Management
The objective of this paper is to create a quantitative method to determine the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) score of a company in order to mitigate the subjectivity or bias inherent in current ESG scoring methodologies. An ESG score is a metric that tells a consumer how well a firm is performing in meeting Environmental, Social and Governance aspects that are relevant to the firm. This paper effectively develops a new ESG scoring system based off of the Global Reporting Initiative ESG standards framework. Using this framework, ESG scores were calculated for companies in the Gartner Supply Chain Top …
