What If I Liked It Better Before? An Analysis Of Consumer Reactance To Brand Logo Redesigns, Lauren Bushnell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Past research has explored the relationship between logo redesigns and consumer behavior, specifically detailing the influence of brand connection on consumer processing of logo redesigns. Such research has found that variations in logo design have key implications on consumer connection to brands in ways that influence brand attitude. Key constructs explored include brand loyalty and commitment, the extent or style of changes in redesigns, and visual processing of logos as a means of determining future behaviors. While prior research emphasizes the influence of loyalty and connection to brands in relation to consumer processing of logo redesigns, research has not fully …

The Investment Gap: An Exploration Of Why So Few Women Study Finance At Brigham Young University, Elizabeth Anne Pearson Mar 2022

The Investment Gap: An Exploration Of Why So Few Women Study Finance At Brigham Young University, Elizabeth Anne Pearson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis explores the root cause of the systemic underrepresentation of women in the finance industry by investigating why so few women choose to study finance in college. It looks in depth at why there is a low percentage of women that graduate in finance from Brigham Young University each year by analyzing the survey responses of women in business majors across the Marriott School. The thesis discusses three areas of solutions for greater mentorship, transparency, and exposure that can be implemented through five actionable steps to help shift the dynamic of representation. While I do not aim to make …

Risk Management And The Collegiate Real Estate Market During The Covid-19 Pandemic, John Spencer Tippets

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis is a study of business risk management for collegiate real estate firms in cataclysmic events, such as but not limited to the COVID-19 pandemic. The study applies principles and frameworks for Strategic Risk Management (SRM) from Dr. Paul Godfrey’s book, “Strategic Risk Management: New Tools for Competitive Advantage in an Uncertain Age.” Included is an analysis of original survey data collected from Provo college students, how students responded to business decisions by local real estate management firms, and university policies. Initial Effects Of Subchapter V Of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy During Covid-19, Denise Han Mar 2021

Initial Effects Of Subchapter V Of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy During Covid-19, Denise Han

Undergraduate Honors Theses

On February 19, 2020, the Small Business Reorganization Act of 2019 went into effect, ushering in the use of Subchapter V by small business debtors. Lawmakers crafted Subchapter V with the intent to make the reorganization process more streamlined and cost effective than the standard Chapter 11 was for these debtors. With features such as the Subchapter V trustee, cramdown provisions, filing deadlines, lack of a creditors’ committee, and relaxed disclosure requirements, small business debtors should in theory be better positioned to emerge from bankruptcy as viable entities. Through quantitative analysis and qualitative research, this Article explores initial observations on …

The Effects Of Covid-19 Preoccupation On Business Activity: A Bounded Rationality Perspective, James White Aug 2020

The Effects Of Covid-19 Preoccupation On Business Activity: A Bounded Rationality Perspective, James White

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Using the unique conditions afforded by the global pandemic, we examine Simon’s influential 1947 Bounded-rationality theory with empirical data. We attempt to correlate a shift in attention with a decrease in routine organizational activity. Using a relative measure for interest in COVID-19 topic prevalence from Google Trends and sales activity from a diverse sample of business to business companies. Our results support Simon’s theory. We found a moderate relationship between routine activity and a global shift in attention. Furthermore, the data highlight a possible theoretical threshold necessary for an event to cause divergence.

Rising Action: The Effect Of Narrative Transportation On Consumer Purchase Behavior, Bryan Samuelsen Mar 2020

Rising Action: The Effect Of Narrative Transportation On Consumer Purchase Behavior, Bryan Samuelsen

Undergraduate Honors Theses

We investigate whether narrative transportation can have an effect, not only on beliefs and purchase intentions, but on purchase behavior. Participants watch a video related to digital assistants and choose whether to enter a drawing for their choice of a digital assistant or a gift card; we hypothesize that those whose transportation is inhibited will be less likely to choose the digital assistant. We successfully inhibit transportation in the pretest, but do not see similar results in the study and are thus unable to determine if there is an effect on behavior.

The Effects Of Inter-Industry Mergers And Acquisitions On The Long-Term Volatility Of Equity Returns, Collin Myers Jan 2020

The Effects Of Inter-Industry Mergers And Acquisitions On The Long-Term Volatility Of Equity Returns, Collin Myers

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The objective of this research was to discover whether a significant relationship exists between the theoretically diversifying effects of inter-industry mergers and acquisitions (“M&A”) and changes in the volatilities of acquisitive firms’ publicly-traded equity security returns (measured as the standard deviation of percentage changes in price) from pre-transaction announcement to post-transaction completion. My hypothesis is that a negative relationship should exist between changes in a firm’s equity return volatility over time and whether the firm completes a diversifying acquisition, which I define as one in which the target firm primarily operates in a different industry than the acquirer. 980 diversifying …

The Negative Impact Of Positive Stereotyping: Relationship Between Positive Stereotypes, Perceived Competence And Perceived Potential For Leadership, Megan Chan Jul 2019

The Negative Impact Of Positive Stereotyping: Relationship Between Positive Stereotypes, Perceived Competence And Perceived Potential For Leadership, Megan Chan

Undergraduate Honors Theses

For many years, Asian Americans have been positively stereotyped as the most successful racial group in America. Yet, very few Asian Americans occupy top leadership positions. This research investigates how positive stereotyping affects managers’ perception towards Asian Americans’ level of competence and potential for leadership. I conducted a scenario study with a sample of 315 people working and residing in the United States. These participants assumed the role of decisions makers and were presented with information about job applicants where the variable data (i.e. race) was manipulated. Based on the differences in ratings on Asian Americans and non-Asian Americans, I …

Strategic Implications Of Blockchain, William R. Adams Apr 2018

Strategic Implications Of Blockchain, William R. Adams

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis introduces blockchain, the underlying technology of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, and discusses how best to conceptualize it relative to other technologies. Following an explanation of the fundamentals of blockchain, also known as the distributed ledger, I identify the characteristics of the technology. Building upon blockchain’s inherent strengths and limitations, I explore potential business applications of blockchain. Finally, I recommend that leaders continue to track the development and adoption of blockchain technology, even if they decide that implementing it does not align with their organization’s strategy at present.

In a competitive global market place, technology adoption and application in supply chain is becoming increasingly important as companies seek to acquire competitive advantages. Since blockchain’s advent to the global stage of modern disruptive technologies, several questions remain unanswered pertaining to the benefits that blockchain adoption poses to global supply chains. Predictive Power? Textual Analysis In Mergers & Acquisitions, Philip Morgan Apr 2018

Predictive Power? Textual Analysis In Mergers & Acquisitions, Philip Morgan

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Modern corporations utilize mergers and acquisitions as strategies to develop shareholder value today more than ever before, yet the need for understanding firms’ rationale and strategy is critical in predicting post-merger stock performance for all investors. I apply the interpretive power of textual analysis and regression to a corpus of SEC mergers and acquisitions public company filings between 1994-2017. Not only do I challenge the statistically significant correlation between word content and post-transaction abnormal stock returns, but I also characterize the effects of time segments, transaction size, and industry variation across time. As a final application, I consider sentiment analysis …
