What Happened In The Past: How Experience Does Not Mean Squat When It Comes To Adapting To The Changing Nature Of Work, Shawn M. Bergman
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
The magnitude and pace of workplace change mean that individuals also need to adapt and change their approach to solving modern business problems. The fact that analysis, creativity, and adaptability skills are continually listed as some of the most in-demand employee skills indicate that the workforce has not kept up. Instead, people rely on experience and intuition to solve novel problems. This reliance is concerning because neither have ever been listed as in-demand employee attributes and because experience often has a negative relationship with job performance. The session will introduce a decision-making framework and problem-solving approach, which first involves understanding …

Signal Cost And Value Alignment In Organizational Sustainability Messaging To New Hires, Mackenzie Law, Ellise Vangilder, Kaitlyn Miller, Mariana Solanilla, Luke Vavricka, Amanda Lillie, Jack Carson, Jim Westerman
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
Introduction As companies continue to integrate sustainable initiatives as a strategic focus, their communications to new hires must adapt accordingly. Orientation programs represent an opportunity to inform new hires about the company’s sustainability values, but factors influencing the impact of sustainability messaging on new-hire perceptions remain unexplored. It is important for organizations to send signals to their new hires which are perceived as credible, meaningful, and genuine. However, the framing of sustainability orientation messages may combine with new-hire individual differences to influence these perceptions. We draw from signaling theory and value congruence research in HR to consider the potential impact …

African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
Inclusive design in information and communication technology (ICT) is the development of information and communication technology artifacts that are accessible and easy to use for as many people as possible. Human diversities must be considered when producing these inclusive design artifacts. It is not only important for abled people but also extends to people with disabilities, the elderly and anybody challenged with using these artifacts. Yet, few designers and developers adopt inclusive design methodologies in their practice. This study seeks to identify and understand the factors that influence the implementation of inclusive design practices in organisations. The methodology was based …

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
As the global digital economy continues to grow in interest and financial worth, it is imperative to harvest data to gain early information on this nuanced economy. Already, we have witnessed billions of dollars in losses and wins at the blink of an eye, encouragement to invest from well-known celebrities and politicians, and high anxiety from the newness, power consumption, and potential outcomes of this nuanced system. Stemming from the lack of solid evidence in this emerging field, we hope to gain more insight on the early players and variation within the digitized economy. Similarly, we hope to identify specific …

A Qualitative Look Into Repair Practices, Jumana Labib
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
This research poster is based on a working research paper which moves beyond the traditional scope of repair and examines the Right to Repair movement from a smaller, more personal lens by detailing the 6 categorical impediments as dubbed by Dr. Alissa Centivany (design, law, economic/business strategy, material asymmetry, informational asymmetry, and social impediments) have continuously inhibited repair and affected repair practices, which has consequently had larger implications (environmental, economic, social, etc.) on ourselves, our objects, and our world. The poster builds upon my research from last year (see "The Right to Repair: (Re)building a better future"), this time pulling …

Business Students' Co-Op And Internship Information Use, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips, Garrett R. Brewster
Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)
At Purdue University, librarians worked with an undergraduate researcher to survey business students who had completed an internship or co-op to determine their information use during these experiences. We asked students about the information tasks they completed, the information source types they used, where they learned to use these sources, and their perceived difficulty in finding information sources. This lightning talk will present a brief overview of our findings.

Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings
Presenters will examine the trend of “wearing many hats” in higher education leadership. For example, being both a department chair and faculty member. In addition, the notion of successfully managing up, the importance of understanding each role you have, and understanding your situational role and the communication we use will be discussed. Lastly, participants will engage in case study scenarios challenging participants to consider various administrative situations and identifying reasonable approaches based on which “hat” you are wearing.

The purpose of this study was to understand the evolving visitor experience at Monocacy National Battlefield (MONO) in Fredrick, Maryland and, specifically, the way this National Park Service site serves both its’ destination and local visitors. Using an Importance-Performance Analysis, segmented by visitors’ county of residence, we demonstrate key differences in the visitor experience across visitor type. Following survey design with MONO managers and approval from the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, onsite sampling occurred over 21 visitor contact days, stratified by day of the week and time of day, in summer and fall of 2021. 469 visitors were …
Beyond The Ivory Tower: Supporting The Graduate Nonacademic Career Search Through Library Partnerships, Sarah Lane
Beyond The Ivory Tower: Supporting The Graduate Nonacademic Career Search Through Library Partnerships, Sarah Lane
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
For a variety of reasons, some graduate students ultimately determine that they would like to pursue a career outside of the ivory tower. At the same time, these scholars may be uncertain about how to translate their expertise into a nonacademic position. At Cornell University, a partnership between the Management Library and the Careers Beyond Academia office has allowed librarians to utilize their unique expertise to assist graduate students throughout their job search.
At the Management Library, business librarians have historically worked with the Career Management Center of the Johnson Graduate School of Management to assist MBA and graduate business …

Creating A Support System For Online Graduate Students Learning New Software, Marisha C. Kelly
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
This poster outlines strategies for creating a support system for online graduate students learning new software. The Northcentral University (NCU) Library is a 100 percent online library providing services and delivering resources to students in a remote context. According to university facts and figures, approximately 98 percent of students are enrolled in a graduate program and nearly 69 percent of those students are pursuing a doctoral degree. In May 2019, a reference and instruction librarian developed a program to support graduate students learning how to use ProQuest RefWorks, a web-based research management tool. Elements of the program include synchronous options …

General Adversarial Networks In Tumor-Related Research: A Review And Agenda For Moving Forward, Andrew James Behrens, Cherie Noteboom
SDSU Data Science Symposium
Recent advances in Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have led to many new variants and uses of GANs. The latest advancements have allowed researchers and practitioners to apply this technique to tumor-related problems with limited data. One of the trends in this problem domain is to develop different variants of GANs suited explicitly to particular problems. The variants of GANs are numerous but share a common characteristic of expanding the dataset by creating synthetic data from the original dataset. This paper aims to develop a research agenda through a systematic literature review that investigates practitioners' and researchers' emerging issues and current …
